Mitchell and Webb mock American court room dramas in general and House M.D. and Shark in particular. From Season 2 Episode 2.

That last scene with black white Speedo and the poor black kid may be one of my favourite scenes from the entire show. Largely because of the dancing. Also because they're two great actors who play an absolutely ridiculous scene totally straight.

Ha, well, thanks! It's nice to be remembered in a generally favourable way for once :P And yeah, I think I've seen everything Charlie Brooker has done up to this point... he's the main reason I know far more about British politics than I do about the politics of my own country... and that's taking into account we've just had a general election of our own :P

What I love about these spoofs and comedy sketches is the odd bits of strangely plausible dialogue you get. "I'm not comfortable with you taking this case." "I'm never comfortable. There are good reasons why people think this is a parody of _House M.D.,_ but it's directly based on a short-lived show called _Shark_ with James Woods. _Shark_ *completely* stole the _House_ structure, but using prosecutors instead of doctors. There's some stuff in this sketch (e.g., the cane) that's based directly on _House,_ but it's mostly it's that _Shark_ was ridiculously derivative. (E.g., the "needn't tell me" boss he used to sleep with is all really taken from _Shark,_ even though _House_ did the same thing first.) Basically _Shark_ borrowed so much that they were lucky they didn't get sued for copyright infringement. (I would bet some _Fox_ lawyers talked about it.)
@Erdles6 жыл бұрын
@Sarah has it spot on. The 'complicated relationship with his daughter' plotline is another direct reference to Shark.

It reminds me slightly of a scene in the old and proper "Brideshead Revisited" when Charles Rider, the character played by Jeremy Irons, takes home a friend to sup with him and his father, played by Sir John Gielgud. His father intentionally pretends that his son's friend is American (although he's English and he's perfectly aware of this) and so in his make-believe scenario tries to adapt to his American culture by asking things like: 'And how about your national sport, cricket?' It's unclear whether he actually thinks cricket, and not baseball, is an American national sport, or just pretends to get it wrong. Though not played for comedy, the scene becomes incredibly hilarious.
