Ironically, Mary Pickford WAS a dedicated caregiver of her only niece Gwynne- the daughter of her tragic sister Lottie. By all accounts, the girl was well cared for, then grew up to have evidently happy family life with her own husband and children and would stay close to Mary to the end of Mary's life. She also stayed friends with her onetime stepson Douglas Fairbanks,Jr. to the end of her life despite the end of her marriage to Mr. Fairbanks,Sr. Yet Mary became so estranged from her adoptive son and daughter that she didn't mention them in any interviews after the early 1960's and, it appears, refused to meet her grandchildren by them but did leave monies for their education. BTW, her birth name had been 'Gladys Louise Smith' but she early on took on the name of Mary as her new given name and bestowed herself the name of Pickford- and her mother and siblings ALSO quickly dropped their surname of Smith for Pickford!

Mary Pickford was an amazing business woman. She was the Taylor Swift of her time.

Why bring her into this? Why is she mentioned no matter the topic? 🙄

@@darlahays2471 Taylor Swift is a brilliant business woman too! She is more than just a singer/song writer. That's how she got where she is today, just like Mary Pickford did in her time. They are both smart and successful women that deserve to have their stories heard.

Taylor Swift has management running her career ..she isn't anything. Not even that great a singer. Her music is bland and appeals to a very low intelligence sort of person . Ughhhh. Swifties are so lost.

Mary was one of the most feminine females imaginable. She did like to flirt but it was in the most innocent way possible. In her autobiography, Sunshine and Shadow (1955), she said that if she had it to do over she felt for sure she would never have cut (bobbed) her waist-length hair. Far later some very elderly hairdresser claimed that he had artificially added to the famous curls of Mary as well as of Shirley Temple. At the time Mary could not defend herself since she had passed away but Shirley Temple said the story concerning herself was definitely not true.

Her brother died of syphilis. And his wife, Olive Thomas, died of accidentally drinking his mercury bichloride syphilis medicine.

This woman was a drunkard after Fairbanks. She adopted a son and a daughter with then husband Buddy Rogers. Those kids were more accepting than others, but the daughter died of a drug overdose. Some reporter found the son, homeless. "I guess she was a nice lady..." She was la Dragonessa of the tiniest degree, at 4'11". I think she was cunning and ruthless. And finally a reclusive lush, who had a final husband toting her gin. Her final appearance at the OSCARS was grotesque. Drunken Little Mary in a fright wig, in bed? The real Norma Desmond.😮

Yes, such a losing individual in the wonderful world of Hollywood she was involved with some of the most successful people ever, Charlie Chaplin, Fairbank, and the rest, tell me if you can just criticise her for being so called alcoholic without you really knowing what the real truth is or was but she lived until her 80s. that’s good enough for me?

As a friend of Douglas Fairbanks said, “All Doug ever wanted was a sober Mary.” But then again, I’m sure all Mary wanted was a faithful Doug.

Today I learned that her childhood home was where Toronto's Sick Kids Hospital now stands. I didn't realize she was Canadian until reading your comment. Cheers
