You do realize that with Ivey's hand he had 9 outs for the spade and 6 more with the straight. 15 outs and the bet Antonio made was a call by most. Good read by Phil, many would have gambled there.

It's a fantastic fold. I don't think a lot of players would be able to fold on the turn knowing that they could improve to a straight/flush on the river. For him to fold in that spot he put Antonio exactly on the hand that he had. If Antonio had a set of 10s, Phil still had 30% to hit his straight or flush.

Technically the King of hearts improves Antonio’s hand but in reality it has the potential to weaken it (obviously its better than a spade) - the last thing I would want to see on the river is another heart if I flopped the nut straight to end up with a Jack high flush. This introduces a big bluff opportunity from your opponent and if you’re running bad, it could put you in a tough call position. Antonio’s hand improves with the K heart on the turn - but it improves in the sense that it wasn’t a spade or a Jack (thus dodging one of two ‘bullets’) but not necessarily improving it to make a back door flush when you already have the nuts.

Let's delve deep into the mathematics of this hand and see if this was a correct fold. Let's assume both players play perfectly mathematically (these guys actually do that quite often so it's not an insane assumption). Phil's Actual Equity on the turn is 20% as the graphic shows. His Required Equity (or Pot Odds if you prefer) to make the call on the turn is: RE = Amt to Call/ (Amt to call + Total Pot) RE = 154,000/ (154,000 + 436,200) RE = 0.26 or 26% The difference between RE and AE is 6% of the Total Pot (590,200) which comes out to a measly 35,412. Let's keep this number aside for now and see the situation from Antonio's perspective if Phil makes the call. From Antonio's perspective, Phil either has: 1) 2 spades. Now the remaining 11 spades make 54 combos. However, there's no way Phil got here with either 7-2 of spades or similar, he would've folded those pre-flop to a raise and a big 3 bet into 4 people by Jennifer. So let's be generous and assume all Ace combos (10), all K combos (9), Q6+ (4), J8+ (2), 89, 86, 56, 45 and even 34. That's 30 combos. OR 2) A set with pocket 7s, 8s or 10s. Mind you, Phil does not have pocket kings as he had a chance to reraise pre-flop twice, once after Bright's raise but most importantly after Jennifer's raise which he would have surely done if he had KK. This leaves him with 9 combos to make sets, 3 of each. Now we go to the river with a couple of situations: 1) A spade hits. Phil bets x amount that’s greater than 6% of the pot (35,412). What is Antonio’s Required Equity to call here: RE = ATC/ ATC + TP RE = x/(x + (x+590,200)) RE = x/(2x + 590,200) What is his actual equity? Out of the total 39 combos, 9 combos out of 39 did not get there (i.e Antonio wins at showdown). That’s 23%. Equating Required Equity and Actual Equity to find the bet size: 0.23 = x/(2x + 590,200) 0.23 (2x + 590,200) = x 0.46x + 135,746 = x 135,746 = x (1 - 0.46) 0.54x = 135746 x = 251,381 So if Phil bets anything from 35,412 to 251,381, Antonio would be correct to call. In fact, this alone tells us that, mathematically, Phil should’ve called the turn. 2) Board pairs. Antonio’s equity is now 77% (30 combos of spades did not get there) which is greater than 50% so he is supposed to call no matter how much Phil bets (bluffs, in this case) which means Phil has zero fold equity. This is also true (i.e Antonio’s equity is > 50%) if a non-spade, non-pairing scare card hits which could potentially give Phil a higher straight from Antonio’s perspective, like a J (3 remaining from Antonio’s perspective, Bright’s jack doesn’t count),a Q (4 remaining, same logic about Jennifer’s Q) or an A (4 remaining, same logic) or even a 9 (3 remaining). 3) None of the above hit. Antonio’s equity here is 100% and no matter what Phil does Antonio is supposed to call (and win the pot). So this means that we can ignore (2) and (3) above since Antonio is mathematically correct to call no matter how much Phil bets in those cases, even all-in, and win the pot. Unfortunately though, (1) above tells us that Phil should’ve called the turn. His implied odds - i.e. the difference between the RE and AE - of 6% of the pot or 35,412 to be exact - were enough to make the call. In other words, if Antonio played mathematically correctly on the river (assuming he put Phil on a total of 39 combos of flush and full house draws), he would have to make a call if a spade hit on the river AND if Phil bet anywhere between 35,412 to 251,381. Or to put it in other words, if two gto engines were playing this hand, Phil’s engine would’ve called the turn and bet exactly 251,381 if a spade hit on the river and Antonio’s engine would have to make the call. Now, does this mean that Antonio made a bet-sizing “mistake” on the turn and should not have given such good odds (plus implied odds) to Phil to make the call? Who wants to do the math for what the correct bet-size should’ve been?

Actually, Antonio made it too little on the turn, which is why Phil was able to assess the situation correctly (helps they had history) and make the excellent fold. I do believe Antonio also had a good feel about what Ivey had and thought he'd give him a good price to continue chasing. Just happens that against an analytical monster like Ivey, you gotta do some things out of the norm from time to time to give yourself a better chance to get paid, when you have it. Probably Antonio shoulda polarized his hand here (bet 90-120% pot).

The river fold seems weird. He must win 179k more if he hits which does not seem super unlikely that he could given that the pot will be roughly 580k. I assume that he didnt think his straight outs were live because in that case he only has to win 25k when he hits and the call become easy. In position I think phil would have called this all day but without initative and out of position the call becomes a little more uncertain, I still think against most opponents its a call, but as Daniel Negreanu said, Ivey must have had some sick read. I dont think that the 9s is too important in this case, sure it blocks out bluffing hands but it also blocks out straight hands like J9s and 96s and if we then take to account that he is less likely to have a straight, our straight outs is live. In some of your videos you try to figure out how the hand could have played out differently, which I think is amazing. Do you think Ivey could have Call / Raise / Get it in OTF? The pot is all ready big (I dont know the stack sizes but I am assuming that they are big enough to justify a shove here with 30% - 40% equity and some fold equity) some of the time he might get esfandiari to fold some hands that he choose to raise in this spot like an A-high flushdraw maybe and that would also be the worst hand to be up against with ivey specific holding. He might also get it in against some hands like QJss that has spades + gutshot (or is he more likely to get A-high flushdraw in on the flop?) to go along with it and in that case ivey is a favorite.
@ivicapavic3381

That's the thing I hate about hold'em - how do you even know Ivey "got away with it"? Do you know what the river card would've been? It's not like Ivey's hand was a bluff. There was a very solid chance for Ivey to hit his nuts, especially if he really put Antonio on exactly a straight, and most likely could've made Antonio see his river bet in that case. Hold'em is not about what hand you have, it's about what hand or hands your opponent thinks you might have, considering how you played the hand up to that point.
