I already went through the crises right when gpt4 came out. I realized that these things just make us much more productive. But not just for companies even for you as well as a person who might want to start your own business. If you can't find work make your own. These tools will allow U to compete with bigger companies as well. So many of them will be slow to adapt. That's your opportunity 😊

Spot on about status game. It’s obvious that human will pivot from careers to status games (sports, cognitive sports, other creative things endeavours) as their full time thing (and of course family, as always). That said, if we enter the AGI age without aggressively focusing on creating abundance (meaning, almost any good / service price goes towards 0), we will face an insane human catastrophe.

I was doom-scrolling reddit the other day and saw that the Canadian government (aka my government) is actually starting plans to experiment with UBI and I got really excited. However, as soon as I went to the comments, there was literally not a single mention of AI that I could find, and most people were screaming about "where is this money going to come from? not from my taxes! free money will just lead to faster inflation!" And I'm just sitting here like does nobody even have the slightest sense that even just maybe this will be necessary sooner or later in order to just help distribute resources created by AI and automation once job loss is at an all time high? No? Well, glad the people in charge are at least leaning in the right direction despite this reaction.

That's because the idea is complete idiocy. Where is the money going to come from? Canada is already on its knees. Firstly, UBI has not been properly explored; rushing to implement it and consolidating power to the government with no thought is absolutely insane. The worst possible outcome in every scenario is authoritarianism, and everyone seems hellbent on bringing it about.

Even in this incredibly well-done video from this exceptional creator, discussion of AGI and its impacts is hopelessly linear. Unfortunately, Mr. Shapiro is -- like the rest of us -- limited to imagining near-future scenarios as dictated by the prison of current conceptual frameworks that are anchored in the near-past. While this may help us prepare for one exceedingly short coming moment in the evolution of AI, we can only hope to remain somewhat aware of what comes after that. Our necessarily monolithic mental constructions simply cannot account for entities that will, with every passing moment, reemerge as something entirely new. So... anyone care to join me in calculating how many angels can dance on the head of this pin?

You do not go far enough, ask yourself, why does your boss work ? Is there any reason for which your boss handle his company that cannot be fullfilled by AI ? Most company are ran so the boss can make money, make money to buy stuff and services, there is no reason for a boss to work anymore in the age of AI, instead of working to get money to pay for stuff and services, the AI work will be free, your boss will just stop working like everyone else. The same for the politics (that are 100% going to slow down AI if you try to make it work with them) AI working with human is like Einstein being forced to work with the dumbest person ever, you will just slow down it, there is no possibility for humans to be helpful for AI, its not that human work will be useless, human work will be counter-productive for AI.

The medical field is on the cusp of major changes thanks to artificial intelligence. AI radiology systems have already proven more accurate than human radiologists at detecting cancer in images. While it's impossible for a single doctor to stay current with the 20,000-30,000 new cancer research papers published monthly, AIs can rapidly consume this information and share insights between systems. Becoming a doctor takes humans over 30 years of education and training. In contrast, a new AI doctor could attain the same level of expertise in 30 minutes by absorbing the collective knowledge of existing medical AIs. The superior pattern recognition and knowledge-sharing abilities of AI promise to revolutionize medicine.

@@aldousd666 right now money represents labor and natural resources if we automate all the labor then money will represent only resources to prevent economy freezing you give people money so they can allocate it properly to fulfill county's (country=people) needs efficiently then they buy stuff they need and you can tax it. They would need to trade in money with those other countries, which they would need to acquire somehow. It couldn't be a raw barter, because, well, it doesn't make sense to pay for shipping and handling in fractions of wool sweaters or whatever it is that they manufacture. Just taxing the citizens and corporations who only have a limited amount of it from whatever they're given as a stipend won't fund the rest. Thats why I'm not sure how it would work.@@Nanohamage

@@aldousd666currently the most recent proposal was a VAT(value added tax). If you automate instead of employ you pay a tax for doing so. That money goes to the citizens who can then spend it on goods or services. Nothing says UBI would be the only source of income for everyone. Many would chose to adopt a hobby. If you knit you might sell things you made to those who appreciate hand knitted items. Look at Renaissance festivals and such. They have tons of people making and selling things the way it used to be done. Look at the prices paid for some art based soly on who the artist was. So you would see a combination of UBI and innovative people. It would become a choice to earn extra over a need. Some might chose to live on just UBI and spend their days on day dreams and study like the great philosophers of the past. Look at how fast KZbin and other platforms have grown. People are being paid to just sit about discussing and philosophizing about what might be. Paid a good sum too!

As usual that was a great vid. I totally don't agree with the status and stuff thing as being DNA deep. Humans firstly are animals, so they want to survive. We survived as a tribal unit, and each tribe and culture around the world had a different way of looking at survival. Some places strongly kept and fought to keep their own stuff. Some places though, stuff was so rare, that the best survival tactic was communal ownership of what the tribe needed. Status within a tribe makes sense as part of its structure. And I can see it as a driver for posessions, but the main reason us Westerners are so rapt about and wrapped up in our stuff is because back in the 1940's advertising shifted to getting us to not value a single well made item that lasted a lifetime, but to letting what we own be the thing others look at to have opinions of us. We were taught to compare ourselves to others. It was all in an effort to foster consumerism. Now we are seeing that rampant consumerism is probably dumb in a finite world, and many people are seeing their self worth in other things, but to say that wanting stuff is a DNA deep drive for us to have status is silly. Babies learn to be protective of their stuff. They can also learn to share. Anyway, I live in Australia, and we have a different culture to sharing that it seems the USA has. Yes, we are heavily into having stuff still, but our Government does healthcare for us. Does social support payments. We are a socialist democracy and here it isn't a crime to be unemployed or homeless. It is just inconvenient.

I have two questions. What incentive would there be for the AI companies making trillions to redistribute their wealth and be taxed (and no, please don’t say they won’t have customers. They can just sell to government, other corporations, or the top 1% exclusively)? Secondly, what about those countries that don't have AI giants? it's all good and well if you live in the United States, but what about the dozens and dozens of other countries that don't have Tech Giants?

For corporations I don't think they will have a choice. At a certain point of economic disparity folks revolt. Income inequality is already pushing many people to start organizing and pushing back. When disruption becomes the norm government will absolutely force taxation upon industry. As for other nations you do realize many third world nations are way quicker to adopt tech. The number of creative solutions coming out of third world countries to provide power to everyone are astronomical. Kids in Africa are developing ways to light their villages, kids. As AI becomes common the cost to get in the game goes way down. Yeah right now it's very expensive. How many items do you own that once only the 1% could afford? Costs will drop. Heck I remember no one having computers, I'm old. Then my brother got one and suddenly everyone had them. Pong was all we had. We went to arcades and now? Everyone has game systems. Cell phones, no one could afford that besides they aren't practical! That one died very quickly. India already is the call center of the world, I guarantee you they will be adopting AI and fast. I predict many Nigerian princes already have AI. The thing about tech like this is individuals can absolutely get into it. Government cannot stop adoption by masses.

The only things I can see holding value when done by humans are sports and live performers (of any kind as long as its enjoyable and their level is at least above the average human). One of my friends started learning digital art (he is already incredible with pen and paper). So, I told him to focus on developing an pleasing workflow, because that's what people will want to watch (livestreams of him making a piece from start to finish with more focus on the process instead of the result). The final piece will not hold that much value (it should still be good enough), because if anyone just wants a good piece of art, they can already get it in a few seconds.

Where do you find this optimism? Direct rebellion is needed almost immediately. AI will increase profits Will ensure unlimited influence on government. I think our only real hope is that the economy crumbles ASAP before minor placating minor changes can be put into place. If CBDCs are but in place before drastic (possibly violent) action is taken then all hope is lost

You're overvaluing people a lot in some professions, to give you ONE example, baby-sitting quality by humans is not great IN GENERAL, same with medical care, old people care, etc... secretaries or "assistants" are horrible, nurses as a group do lots of harm KNOWINGLY, some doctors too, they haven't read a single book in the past five yers and some since they left medical school... teachers are also very ill educated, they do NOT read, nor do they WILLINGLY take any corses or conferences to update their area or field of teaching. And if most "artist" are already replaceable by AI, what does that say about them?? The vast majority of "artists" or performers and park face drawers are incredibly mediocre, and good riddance if AI can replace them... they are not your kids, like when your kid brings home a work of art made or macaroni glues on a paper, these part "artist" are just sucking resources bc they refuse to accept they just don't got it, same with lots of athletes, if you haven't made it by 25-30 just get a job, unfortunately they never paid attention in school, just like artists, so they don't really know anything, their moms or dads told them they were great bc they could draw a cartoon face of them or something... most "programmers are also not good at it, and AI is showing all of them off for what they really are. Ok so if MOST people in ANY profession, specially administrative or paper-involved ACTIVITY are mediocre or "average" then Where does that leave us as humanity, these aggressive, warring hierarchal apes that we are?? Well, my view is that to be average is no longer enough, and only the VERY TOP in any field will survive FOR A WHILE, as they work WITH AI to keep working and creating the best in any field... but Ai learns from all its activities, so eventually even those top people in any field will also be NOT AS good as the AI's... There would be no such thing as average if most humans in ALL THINGS are not average, the very word or definitions DEMANDS that most humans be average, no?? And dont give me the feel good cool aid that is not really a response to tehi fact, that even if you are average you must have some hidden talent or be good at something you are unique like a snowflake, Do humans still want marriage for example?? Kids?? populations and marriages are collapsing, what does that tell you?? For sure men at least still want and like sex itself, but if sexbots are MORE pleasurable than a woman, and more "emotional support", and don't complain about making you a sandwich later, who would you choose!! plus "she" will not divorce you or leave you and take half of whatever you have, and the house!! Just like most YOUNG people prefer to text than call now.... well, do you see where I'm going with this... this is inevitable... and it may sound doom and gloom but it is actually necessary and good for humanity, but that is another long a** comment and this is long enough now. Take care if you read this far, most don't, and be happy.

This is just my perspective but one of the best ways to prepare for AGI is to start now building more unions, better unions, bigger unions, stronger unions, more democratic unions, fully transparent unions, corruption free unions, fun unions, smart unions and militant unions. Strong unions are one effective way to balance and check the power of the big corporations that want to control AGI for more wealth, more inequality and a weaker, more subservient working class. Of course, there's lots and lots of other good things we could do, but more and better unions is near the top of the list. And for god's sake everyone learn MMT and tell your friends. In the USA and most major countries National Taxes Do Not Fund National Spending! Learn the truth, share the truth.

@@AI_effect From my original post: "Strong unions are one effective way to balance and check the power of the big corporations that want to control AGI for more wealth, more inequality and a weaker, more subservient working class." Yes, I definitely want to reimagine the govt. I pray for a govt that actually serves the people by providing all basic services to meet our basic needs for flourishing and thriving. I imagine a govt that is not owned by evil greedy corporations and plutocrats and oligarchs who only care about screwing the working class. I imagine our govt providing a fully funded Federal Job Guarantee at a full living wage with all benefits. How to pay for it? If you understand MMT you'll know that we can easily pay for it.

Preparing for this isn't possible because AGI and then ASI will shortly come after AI. In practice, everyone will be the same as someone mentally deficient. UBI won't solve any of these problems because it will inevitably lead to hyperinflation. Unless you would like to witness the death of your own currency and hyper valuation of commodities and crypto currencies. Live in denial for as long as you can.

UBI is NOT the solution.... no one is going to let 80% of their income to go to other people that basicaly do not want to adapt to changes. Right now at least in EU, we are ALREADY paying more than 50% on average in taxes... therefore working hard for getting less than the 20% when you can get the UBI doing nothing is a no brainer.

One issue I see is that some important but unpleasant jobs might not be automatable by AI. In which case, will there be enough incentive to do those jobs? Like, for example, those people who put on the suits and go into septic tanks. They're horrible jobs but they pay well. If everyone gets money to live without working, how will those jobs be done? I imagine a kind of draft might be necessary, at least temporarily, until AI can do those jobs. (I'm not saying that the septic tank job specifically can't be done by a robot, I'm just using it as an example for an un-automatable unwanted job).

Seeking "security" in job, relationship, etc., and the "formulas" that are purpoted to offer such -- like getting a college degree, etc., is a major driver for a certain percentage of society. Predominantly enneagram type 6, which find it to be their dominant life/decision driver. My parents were children during the great depression of the 1920's,, and when they lost their home because my grandparents' customers couldn't pay their bills, and so neither could they, they had to hitch up the wagons and move in with family who had a farm. My dad said that first morning was like Christmas, with real food and plenty of it, and from that day he swore to always have chickens and a cow and garden. I live a vegan life-style, but still adhere to my father's drive. I somehow feel driven to milk a ruminant and raise chickens, even though I don't eat their byproducts. Those emotional drivers are so deeply seated. I wonder how the 6-ish need for security will be different after AGI?

Weird prediction I have: In Post Labor Economics, it's possible what we think of as "jobs" and "hobbies" will become blurred. UBI is probably an inevitability, but there will more than likely be ways for people to earn more. Doing this will probably be optional, so even if it's something "boring" like jury duty, people might actually look forward to it. Plus, you'll make extra cash to splurge on whatever. Truthfully, these kinds of opportunities might end up being kind of rare anyway because AI could probably do most community service type activities. Of course, this means governments would probably determine what these bonus pay activities would be... And that concerns me a bit. A corrupt government could abuse that to incentivize questionable activities.

I was thinking that maybe once we develop AGI, there will be some lag before the fully capable version is released to the public. This is for a couple of reasons. 1st is that the provider will not want to lose competitive advantage when they could use the tool for r&d into technologies such as quantum computers, fusion and materials design. 2nd is that the agi needs to be properly aligned so that malevolent people do not exploit it to create say killer viruses or nanobots. It might be the case that we will also need to be aligned with genetic engineering and bci to curb our mischievous ways. This obviously opens up a whole barrel of worms, and could lead to something truly dystopian like a barely conscious human hybrid.

Look way back to the past. It was once common for humans not to work. Yeah slaves were the norm, Rome for instance. But citizens, they didn't work. Philosophy was a major past time. Political involvement, you showed up to local planning meetings ECT and we're a part of determining what was to be. People engaged in art for the joy that it brought them. You could study whatever you wanted. You do not need a job to provide meaning. You are capable of doing that all in your own, you just forgotten you can. Do you not have interests and hobbies outside of work? If not you certainly should developed some.

Thanks David for a great exposition on AGI. I warned people through an AI keynote at Concordia University back in January 2018. I suggested three solutions: 1. Get clarity about what life/work you want. 2. Learn computational thinking. 3. Become a creator, not just a worker. Like most people including experts, I could not predict something like ChatGPT, but I envisioned a world where human intelligence would be augmented (called it IA for Intelligence Augmentation). I posited that it would be the highest level of economic activity where a human was involved. I created a video on this AI keynote on my channel for anyone interested. Cheers!

What I advise business is: You will be offered AI products, and you will not refuse because they will be compelling. What I advise workers: The reality is you won't have the time to adapt your career and skillset. You have to hope and prey the powers that be decide to deploy AI as human-directed human-supervised tool, rather than fully autonomous human replacements. That will give you something to do all day, doing prompts and QA of output. In the short term you'll have increased productivity, which will protect jobs temporarily perhaps.
