Agrahara is the name given to the Brahmin quarter of a heterogenous village or to any village inhabited by Brahmins. Agraharams were also known as Chaturvedimangalams in ancient times.

Personaly a sr. Citizen belonging to single type madam of teakewood construction in anchal old tamil brahmins houses of Kerala ancestry of 15th century old madams. But now live in metro. Also agraharams type house my father purchased at NAGERCOIL In1956 from my maternal grand father who lived there upto 1931of old Travancore kingdom. Now that brahmins street house only few brahmins houses. Rest are sold to non brahmins, shops, banks, other business houses like pharmaceutical shops near NAGERCOIL temple. only very few agraharams exist in places like palakkad, Trivandrum and other few. Places. Brahmins have migrated to metros for. Living and jobs.

wen I was 9 year old we live in pazavngadi agraharam.that time only one cloth shop Ramachandra iyer pudava kadai their.that is 1941.now 2019 I was attend a marriage. Agraharah washout their.All houses are becomes shops.

1310 ൽ pandya രാജാവായിരുന്ന മാരവർമ കുലശേഖരൻ മരിച്ചപ്പോൾ അടുത്ത രാജ്യവകാശം ആർക്ക് എന്ന കാര്യത്തിൽ തർക്കമുണ്ടായി. ഓർമയിൽ നിന്ന് മഹാദേവൻ ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ താളുകൾ മറിച്ചു. കുല ശേഖരന് സുന്ദര pandyan എന്നൊരു മകനും മറ്റൊരു ബന്ധത്തിൽ വീര pandyan എന്നൊരു മകനുമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. രാജ്യവകാശത്തിന് വേണ്ടി ഇവർ തമ്മിൽ നടന്ന യുദ്ധത്തിൽ പരാജയപ്പെടും എന്നുറപ്പായപ്പോൾ അന്നത്തെ ഡൽഹി സുൽത്താനായിരുന്ന അലാവൂദീൻ ഖിൽജിയോട് sundarapandyan സഹായമഭ്യർഥിച്ചു. മാലിക് ഗഫൂർ എന്ന പട്ടാളത്തലവന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ വലിയൊരു പടയെ ഖിൽജി തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലേക്കയച്ചു. നടന്നത് പക്ഷേ, വലിയ ദുരന്തമായിരുന്നു. പൊതു സ്വത്ത്‌ നശിപ്പിക്കുകയും കൂട്ടമാനഭംഗവും കൊലപാതകങ്ങളും അരങ്ങേറി. സ്വന്തം സ്ഥലത്ത് സുരക്ഷിതരല്ലെന്ന് തോന്നിത്തുടങ്ങിയ തമിഴർ പൊള്ളാച്ചി വഴി പാലക്കാടേക്കും നാഗർകോവിൽ വഴി തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തേക്കും പ്രവേശിച്ചു. തഞ്ചാവൂർ കുംഭകോണം മായാവരം ഭാഗത്തുള്ളവരാണ് പാലക്കാടേക്ക് നടന്നത്. മധുര, തിരുനൽവേലി, കല്ലടെകുറിച്ചി പ്രദേശത്തുകാർ തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തേക്കും 14-)o നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ആദ്യ തരംഗം. ഈ ഒഴുക്കിൽ *ചെട്ടിയാർ, മൂത്താൻ, തട്ടാൻ, വടുകൻ, ആണ്ടി* സമുദായത്തിൽപ്പെട്ടവരുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒന്നുകിൽ അവരും ജീവനും ഭയന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടവരാണ്. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ബ്രാഹ്മണർക്ക് സഹായികളായി മഹാദേവൻ സംഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

Rezhi is not the living room. It just connects thinnai to Kootam. Rezhi is just a passage to Thazhvaram. Kootam is adjacent to Thazhvafram. Kootam is the living room. Here the family eats food, worships the dirty, decides about important mater and spend time chit-chatting. Invariably, there will be a rocking cot, hanging from ceiling. I have spent my entire childhood in Kalpathy agraharam and hence this comment.

Such agraharams made many people's life prosperous, not only of Brahmins also of non Brahmins. I am one among them. Thanks to those Brahmin friends who showed me way to reach to present position. But now I am unhappy, because those agraharams are no more, just for a name sake now one or two houses, they too with out any income, no one to care these poor Brahmin families. Very sad news

What an awkward culture was of that time, you defecate behind the agraharams and the poor so called people called scavengers (Thotti) come and collect the feaces of Brahmins. Is this culture still followed or banished by the Government of India?

@@keralahunk This was true all over India. I had seen this even in a remote town called Bhuj, in Kutch and included the entire town. Thank God this system has been outlawed and sewage systems have been built. But there still may be scavengers in some really remote places especially in North India.
