I well recall watching "Hullabaloo," as a very young kid and loved seeing the "Go-Go" dancers interact with the "headline" performer(s). I don't recall seeing this particular episode (though I most likely had) but, I can say that I absolutely loved the "Mamas and the Papas," but most especially loved the incredibly beautiful voice of Cass Elliot. I was 17 when I graduated from high school in 1974 - and just a month later, Cass died (in London) at age 32 (after a very successful solo concert run at the famous London Palladium). It was such a gut-punch for me - and in some ways still is. As I was watching this wonderful video clip (which seemed to suddenly appear on my "list" of KZbin "suggestions") I suddenly realized, that today, is July 29, 2022 - the very month/day Cass died in 1974. RIP dear.

Thanks for sharing!! How incredibly lucky that you got to enjoy The Mamas & Papas when they were in action. Cass’s death is a gut punch for me too and I wasn’t even born until 17 years after her death. I never knew her but miss her so much❤️ 48 years ago she left us too soon

@@PapaAlec Thank you Alec for your kind reply! Cheers and best wishes from Niagara Canada! Incidentally, the very talented tenor (one of the "Papas") Denny Doherty, was Canadian born (Nova Scotia) and lived his last years in Mississauga, Ontario (not all that far from where I am). Besides Cass Elliot's beautiful voice on "California Dreamin") Denny's voice (as lead) greatly stands out. (John Phillips rocked it too, no doubt).

This originally aired in color on March 14, 1966 (only a black and white kinescope exists); they sang live to the original music track used on the recording, because they couldn't recreate their recorded "sound" before a live audience [same situation when they also performed on "THE HOLLYWOOD PALACE" and "THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW"].

@Aloofbear I totally agree with you guys. The 60s and 70s can never be recaptured again. Being a kid in the 60s and a teen in the 70s were great. We had to make our own fun. Hide and seek, Kickball, Batmitten etc.. No video games or computers. I'm not knocking them, I love KZbin. Lol. But we had to use our imaginations and that was PRICELESS. Thanks for posting.

The bathtubs were a visual reference to the cover art of their debut album "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears." They worked very hard to be able to replicate their complicated recorded sound live without the aid of backup singers and for the most part succeeded. Their first three albums were nothing short of brilliant but success proved a rough road for all four of them emotionally.

The vocals are indeed live. They are singing over the studio instrumental. Many other of their TV appearances were lip-synched, as so many singers' were then. But this is live. There are many subtle differences throughout: in terms of pitch or length a note is held; in the slight splitting of Cass and Michelle's harmonies; in the entries or re-entries being off by a split second; in some syllables being given more urgency. It's to their credit that so many think it's lip-synched. But it's live.
@toddmartin17592 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. They are singing live, but they are singing over the song, not just the instrumental track. There are some subtle and not so subtle differences from the recorded version. This performance is better; they've enhanced the song by adding yet another layer of singing on top of it. As Michelle Phillips explained, it was just one more overdub.

The reason why this looks like an "old mm8 home movie", 'mary', is because the original color videotape of this performance was filmed in black and white from a TV monitor (that's how most videotaped and "live" TV shows were preserved back then, and seen, via delayed broadcast, on smaller NBC stations unable to carry "HULLABALOO" at its scheduled time- Mondays, 7:30pm(et)- and didn't have videotape playback units; they showed it on a 16mm projector).

I think it's a reflection of our whole culture, Gyphia. Many of us in that era had grand dreams; many a song offered hopes of peace, harmony, a new way of life - an Age of Aquarius optimism. Now, we have passed through the Age of Cheney, emerging into something like an Age of the Greedy and Short-sighted. Our contemporary music reflects the outcome - either cookie-cutter vapid or angry and dangerous-sounding. I ache for things to turn again.

@Tsugaheterophylla you're right. Most Hullaballo shows were lip synched. And most Mamas and Papas TV appearances were lip synched because of all the layers in the song. They did do this live at Monterey and there is video of it on KZbin. But they hadn't been together in months, didn't rehearse and were tired... so not the best performance.

The instrumental is not live; no one is claiming it is. It is the vocals over the instrumental that are live. The fact that the mics aren't plugged in is moot. There may be mics overhead that aren't seen, but regardless, the Ms&Ps had enough power not to need mics, especially in this early stage of their career when they were so revved up that their voices nearly exploded off the set. The differences between the studio vocal and this vocal are self-evident and speak for themselves.

Just shows how bizarre Hullabaloo and the other variety shows got. Gotta have go-go dancers, no matter what's being played, and I guess kids dug stuff that was incongruous (bathtubs and plumbing?) as though there must be some deeper meaning that the truly hip kids "got", and that you might, too, if you kept watching. Love how one of the guys stops paying attention to the music to dig one of the dancers.
