Most liquid beauty products are stability tested and should last between 2-4 years unopened. Most products become less potent over time as the active ingredients deteriorate. You should never use products that smell weird or change consistency or color. In rare cases, the older products can lead to things like dermatitis etc. I personally would not risk using older products that I don't know as it is harder to tell if they have changed.

Thank you for creating your content! I find you so inspiring~ One of the things that I find helpful, is thinking of experiences as lessons. Since this makeup is older than 3 years, any woman who might receive it from a shelter you donate to, doesn't need an additional dermatological problem. Think of tossing out anything that could expire as the cost of a lesson to donate things more quickly in the future. And fortunately, you still have lovely things that don't expire, like the make-up brushes, that someone falling on hard times might enjoy receiving from a shelter. It's an opportunity to learn and grow while moving forward, so you can be free of guilt, or any negative feelings that might weigh down your progress. This is a thought process that I find helpful, maybe you will find it helpful too? Sending you virtual hugs and love!!!

I would so agree on this, I do err on the side of caution and dont hold things past 3 years. Some items like mascara though may be shorter, like 18 months. Sometimes you can tell because they separate, or smell funny or something. Othertimes you cant tell, like the SPF may no longer work. There is also the risk that the preservative has failed and bacteria has started to grow. Many makeup items will have an expiry date and even if its unopened it should be thrown out if beyond that. Also keep in mind the Period After Opening. Its that little container symbol with the months in it. I always write the date I opened something next to that. If the product is several years old before opening that PAO date may be shortened as well. I wouldn't risk giving anyone expired or old makeup. I think of it like giving someone expired food. It MAY be ok, but would I want to risk getting someone else sick or burning their skin?

I am so happy for you to be clearing out your storage locker!!! Even less stuff taking up space in your busy mind, and passing on what can be used by somebody else! I always tell people, "if you want people to treat your things with respect, show that YOU do, first." because you had nasty old socks. And gold jewelry in storage. They were treated with the same respect. If I walk into your house and it's fully hoarded, there's no way not to bump or crash something, and I can't tell if it's special because it all looks like "just junk on junk". Now your things have pride of place. You're not stacking boxes on each other until they collapse and damage other things. So exciting for you!!!

Instead of giving reusable bags away on facebook market place you could put them away in the yard sale tubs to use to give away when someone doesn't have a bag and buys a lot. And it is more sustainable too then using plastic bags and stuff and the bag is also usefull for the person who buys stuff on your yard sale

I think there are some good suggestions here. You may be able to post things on the buy-nothing FB page with the big caveat of expired as you said, but who knows. If no one takes it soon, then probably toss. Thank you for sharing this, all the thoughts + the reflections are useful. Perhaps they are here to teach all of us not to do it in the future even if they can't fulfill their orginal purpose of being used as cosmetics...but still, super hard!

Being a boy I don’t really know all that much about makeup, but I think the feeling is probably similar when I throw away expired food. Huge guilt-I spent money on that food, and there are people in the world who don’t have enough to eat. But no amount of guilt is going to make the food fresh or edible again. I have to tell myself that I made a mistake and resolve to do better. Also, if I throw out anything unopened I make a donation for the same amount of money I spent on it to Northwest Harvest (local charity that fights hunger). That helps a lot. But back to makeup: if I were a person who used cosmetics and I had something I wouldn’t put on my face (or in my hair, or on my nails, etc.) because it was expired, I wouldn’t donate it. I would swallow the guilt and discard.

My advice would be to toss or recycle all of the makeup and toiletries. Make it easier on yourself and get rid of it. If they were a year old, it would be one thing, but they are several years old and prob expired or less effective. From here forward, I would just decline free samples so that you don’t create another pile of them.

One of the hardest things for me to understand was that just because I hadn't opened it or used it, did not make it brand new...it's hard to let go of stuff you didn't even get to enjoy, but remember that at the time you got it, it's what you needed then. Dear Ms Heart, my mother was a qualified beautician who trained with Helena Rubinstein in London in the 1950s and also worked for Clarins as well as other leading cosmetics brands during the 1970s and 80s. She gave me the following rules with regards to cosmetics and skin care products: Firstly, lotions and creams, whether face or body, have a shelf life of up to 24 months unopened. However, eye makeup palettes should be discarded after 12 to 18 months as the clays and mineral powders used and colourants are prone to deterioration after that time. Secondly, eye specific lotions and creams shouldn’t be kept for longer than 6 to 12 months depending on the product. This is because the eye area is super sensitive and you could impair your vision by using old products in that area. Note that creams and lotions become rancid and develop hidden bacteria that you can not see with the naked eye (even if they haven’t gone solid or separated). Thirdly, you can usually get away with storing shampoo and conditioner for up to 36 months unopened and good quality fine milled soaps bars last for up to 5 years before they begin to lose their smell and start to degrade in texture. I hope this helps you to see that most of your makeup products should really be thrown into the bin or recycling as they are older than 5 years.

Huge congratulations on the progress you are making - you are really gathering the decluttering momentum. In the uk we have symbols on our toiletries which indicate how long them last for - I have never seen one for longer than 24 months. I know you feel guilt for not passing them on when they weren’t expired - but don’t be hard on yourself - you are recovering from hoarding disorder - there are bound to be things you come across that are past their best. Trash them this time and resolve to either not accept more or move them on quickly if you wish to donate in the future - you are so kind hearted, show yourself that love too xx

Yay, another great decluttering session in the basement, awesome that you are able to go through stuff from the storage as well. :) If you want to rearrange the tubs and everything, maybe do it as a family project. The boys can be in the play area (decluttering and/or planning a makeover, like gaming/art station as they are getting older) and you and hubby can rearrange the other tubs and decide together where the workout equipment, different zones etc will be. So you plan the basement setup together. Then you can show hubby how many totes he has so far. He seems to have a lot of treasures, just like you, but since he is not a hoarder, maybe he can look through his stuff quite quickly. :) It will be awesome to have a functional family space and a crafting station for you. I think that some of the totes that you went through at the beginning of the first basement series are ready for a second round. You are so strong! Lots of love and have a great weekend!

For the hotel toiletries, I would dump the body wash and shampoo samples into your hand soap. That’s what I did when I found a bunch. They were old so I didn’t necessarily want to use them around my face bc I have sensitive skin. They worked fine to wash my hands, however, and they didn’t go to waste.

As a chemist and a makeup enthusiast... As much as i understand the feeling of guilt, Miss Heart - THROW IT AWAY. We can think that they are unopened, but first thing you see =should be the expiration date on packaging. And sure, even tho many cosmetics are advised to be thrown out after few months to a year - SOME products are still good after waaay longer. But as much as I can risk the condition of my face, would I risk someone else's face too? Definitely not, so donating consumables is absolute no go, i would feel way more guilty with someone getting sick, having irritation or allergy issues after my "gift" than throwing it away after such a long time. Also, don't think oof it as new. It was produced years ago, it could have separated, oxidised, spoiled etc etc. And in my opinion selling it or giving away will be lots of hassle for small amounts of products even if someone wants to pick it on their own resonsibility.

Things such as creams, foundation, oil based things, are not good after six months to a year. I don't know about hand lotion, I would think that would still be okay to use if unopened. If you find socks without a match, just tie some in knots for Miss. Pepper to play with. My cats love knotted socks!

Soaps and shampoos, unless they have changed consistency, can stay long if originally unopened. For the body lotions, if you are not sure, the small ones are nice to be used on leather purses, to clean them, and give them a nice shine. Also brand new can be ok in case of e.g. very dry knees, feets, hands. Great job-amazing toast toast pile. And don't be hard on yourself-ypu are doing wonders. The guilt is understandable, but you sure growing, and will not do such hoarding in the future, so as every growth, it is ok to look at our falls as steps to learn from!

I always wonder the same thing as you never really know how old a product is when you buy it from a shop either it could have been on the shelf for 2yrs. Everyone takes a risk buying cosmetics and bathroom supplies any way, they say don't use after 12/24 months when opened on the package but how long is that? Who remembers when they opened it exactly?.I feel if you put the date out here and someone wants it for free, it's at their own risk, I use makeup beyond the recommend dates as I feel it's more a best before just to get you to buy more stuff, if it was a real issue it would have a proper expiry date including the year like suncream. You can usually judge by the look smell and consistency if it's worth using.

Shampoos and other soapy stuff is most likely still good if unopened. Powder makeup usually stays good longer than liquid ones. I have 5 years old body cream and it is still good, (I'm trying to use up the old stuff... ) Be careful with mascaras and everything close to eyes. If makeup is separated and light shake won't mix it is is too old. Everything that smells weird or has weird texture or color should be tossed.
