A Hoarder's Heart

A Hoarder's Heart

Күн бұрын

In this video, I share how I purchased Dawn the Minimal Mom’s work book: DeClutter your home in 15 minutes a Day. I have hoarding disorder and ADHD and I have difficulty simplifying tasks. I wanted to use Dawn’s step-by-step guide and apply it to my own home. The thought popped into my mind: Could a Hoarder become a Minimalist? The answer is yes, yes someone with hoarding disorder could become a minimalist. We just have to dive deeper with working through emotions, attachments, past traumas and possible therapy (depending where on the Hoarding Spectrum someone is) With a successful support group, the willingness to change and step-by-step guide from Dawn’s workbook: anyone can change & transform their home into a Minimalist’s Home!

I’ve worked with a therapist to help me with my hoarding disorder. I found that decluttering in stages helpful. I go through the stuff in one area and get rid of the easy items. Then let some time go by to adjust to “loss” of these things. I go back after adjustment and do more removal of stuff in that same area (like a dresser drawer or bathroom cabinet) . I continue to repeat this same process. During the adjustment period, I go to a different area and repeat the process. Thus, I’m constantly working on getting control of my hoarding and getting my home decluttered. By repeatedly experiencing this “loss” I become desensitized to feelings of anxiety and stress when parting with things that served as a crutch for validating my life. Things were used to show I did something worthwhile and that I existed for a purpose. It was that things determined my value. This technique includes putting things in its home immediately so that “touching” items more than once will be kept in check. I’m still fighting my hoarder inclinations, but the feeling of accomplishment increases my self worth and desire to continue the fight. I hope you’ll be able to share this idea with others. It may take longer to completely declutter my house, but the satisfaction of knowing there’s hope that it will happen is worth it for me. Thank you for reading this. I was very nervous about putting this out for an unknown number of people to read. Now I feel better because hoarding is really difficult to understand and it is really a type of mental illness.

@@ahoardersheart Hi! I just saw you on a Dawn's channel. I find this an interesting idea, about whether or not someone falls out of, say a hoarding status or has it, but managed, and wondered what you thought. I have an eating disorder since I was 15 and I'm 62. It's something I live with and have to try daily to manage. I'm not doing great with it at the moment. My eating disorder doesn't just go away. Unfortunately. My son is a heroin addict. He always will be. He has managed it well, but not right now. I feel my eating disorder and his addiction align that way. I just have a path in my bedroom, to my bed. It hasn't always been this bad. I have found it oftentimes goes along with how well I or I'm not managing my eating. Just a thought! I'm so happy to be here! I found Dawn years ago, too. She has helped my adult daughter & I a lot! I expect to be helped her, too. I keep planning to get an appointment to see a counselor and now it's Friday again and they don't work on Friday in that office. Maybe I'll try again for Monday. I've never actually been diagnosed by anyone but myself, with my eating disorder. But it's quite obvious. Take care I hope you can make heads or tails out of my comment because sometimes I have too many thoughts in my head! I honestly think I'm and thought have thought for a long time that I have ADHD, as well. I've also had panic attack since I was 19 anxiety and on and off depression. Ugh 😩 🥳🥳🥳😎 I'm cool like that!

@@Nan-59 I am so sorry about your eating disorder. I read somewhere that the longer you put off treatment of eating disorders the harder it is to treat (unfortunately and you say you left it untreated since 15 yrs old?) I hope they are wrong but you must stop putting it off and see someone as they are kind and helpful regarding that. Please don’t let another Week and Friday go by! Ps your child’s heroine addiction and your eating disorders are not going to to “go away” without help of a professional. You both seem to be trying to treat yourselves and you aren’t coping. Please get yourselves in to see a professional in treating both illnesses for you are both “not alone”, there are professionals and friends out there for you. It is just a matter of whether to do the following quote: “you keep doing the same things expecting different results.” Or whether you want to exceed, get out of your comfort zone and call up a centre on Monday for both your son and you and get on that train to helpville! We are cheering you on!

Hey lovely! Here's a phrase that helps me let some things go: "Someone else is going to love this more. I'm going to pass this on so they can." That is the positive thinking I'm trying to use. In my little home, I'm aiming to have three long shelves for specific purposes. (The description to that is going to be a bit long, so I'll put it in a separate paragraph, but no pressure to read!). You're doing great! Thank you for sharing your journey! It's been inspiring! Here are the three categories for the shelves: “processing,” “return”, and “pass on”. The "processing" category covers anything in the wrong room, to a craft project the family is working on, to recent shopping that just needs to be put away. "Returns" can be library items, products from a store you changed your mind about, or something you borrowed from a friend or family member. "Pass on" covers donate items, gifts to be given on specific days, or items you simply don’t mind visitors picking through to take home. (Label accordingly!) 😁 I think these categories are vital, but I haven’t personally found a good space to put them yet.

I would caution you re: making plans to get rid of something contingent on other work/tasks (e.g., I will make cookies and give them to somebody in this container to keep), *unless* you are really good at following through immediately on that intent. Personally, I absolutely suck at following through with these types of ideas, so I end up having a stack of things that should have gone a long time ago but are waiting for me to do the thing I was supposed to do. It's also ok to just donate things - you don't have to do additional labor to justify or validate decluttering.

I think you would really benefit from trying out Dana K. White's approch "A Slob Comes Clean". The two of you seem to have the same struggles and Dana has a way of organizing for "people who don't like organizing". I have listened to her podcast for quite some time and the routines she describes really help me with my depression and ADHD tendencies. The way of professional organizers just doesn't seem to work for me. But I really like that you go through Dawn's workbook and customize it to the needs of a hoarder. A suggestion for your pots and pans cabinet. See how you have sort of three "sections"? Switch the seldom-used chili pot stack to the center behind the door frame, and keep the two other stacks to right and left. Easier to access the ones you use most frequently.

Funny thing happened to me this evening. I was laying in bed and I saw that you had posted a new video. I decided to not watch it right away because I had gone to the dollar tree and purchased six bowls with lids that actually lock on, and 2 that are about the size of your soup storage container and four smaller ones that can hold about a cup and 3/4. I have been struggling with food storage containers because I had been doing a lot of food prep and freezing things portioned for one or two people. I stopped doing the prep as much and my plastic cupboard was overflowing and everything was falling out when I opened the door. I got on the floor and pulled everything out and I kept 2 of my biggest container and thought I would use those for potluck dinner, I kept 3 containers that are divided and have lids and tossed the 5 remaining ones that were all beat up and didn't have lids. I took all but 2of the "doggy bag" container and tossed those and I was able to comfortably fit the new containers. What an amazing feeling to just get rid of the things that were overwhelming me and keep just a few of the older still usable ones and have plenty of room for my pretty new ones with purple locking lids! Then I come back to watch KZbin and see you doing what I had just completed! I am so inspired by you and am looking forward to seeing your progress. I decided my big soup pot that I maybe use once every few months and make room in my pantry for it and only keep the pots I use regularly. Tomorrow I am going to tackle the baking pans and see what I can do without. I'm afraid to go to the spice cupboard because I love using new spices for different things but they have filled an entire shelf and are starting to overflow. Maybe Thursday will be that day! Thanks for sharing how you are doing Dawn's book in a way that is going to work for you. Best to you! Edited to add that I still have enough storage containers for prepping but not the crappy ones without lids!

I also think that safety can be a big motivator for decluttering. Those pots and pans you tossed were likely leeching chemicals into your food. Using pots like that is bad for your health! Also, the plastic containers that contain BPA are very toxic as they age and go through washing, refrigeration, freezing, etc. Plus, microwaving food in those is terrible for your health! Go you! I am buying Dawn's book!

I’ve never thought about it before, but Tupperware might be more difficult to declutter emotionally because we’ve used them to prepare food and feed ourselves with! A very fundamental thing about living… we need to eat! We see them everyday, and some are from a particular period of life we had (school/ holidays / work etc.!) They’re also “useful,” and if it is useful I WILL want to use it! However, all of the containers mean that their use is more limited because it’s stressful to get into a cupboard full of tubs falling everywhere. You’re doing so so well, Miss Heart! 🦄 💖

Great declutter, Mrs. Heart! The concept of fantasy selves, with clothes, also works with our fantasy selves with other subjects in our life too! You know, like, Fantasy cook/baker, entertainer, ect. We are one day, going to do this/ that. Five years passed, have not done it yet! Our cupboards are stocked for some day. Same with hobbies. Future grand children, all our well meaning ideas! This is how hoarding is fueled! Well, in my case anyway. Over the years, all on my own, I have figured this out. Logic! You get so tired of seeing stuff! Especially stuff that does not serve a purpose in your life. Thanks for sharing your progress!👍💟

Pepper seems so happy and comfortable in your home, I'm glad the rehoming worked out. Great job with the kitchen declutter, it feels so good. We sometimes don't realize how much of a burden all our stuff becomes, the opposite of our intention. I like to feel like I'm always prepared for anything, but if we can't access the thing, it can't be useful. Keep up the good work!

Great video! I love how you can take an idea and modify it to fit you instead of throwing out the entire idea. It’s probably because you are so creative. I’d love to see more videos as you work through the book. God bless you my friend!!

Thanks so much for sharing this ! I follow Dawn and was very curious about her workbook. I hope you make other videos of your other rooms because it is very encouraging. I am moving to a much smaller house next year and, even if I have not been diagnosed as hoarder, I do have some tendencies. I am a lot like Dana K White of “A Slob Comes Clean”, as I can find a lot of use for practically anything. I love the “happy story” that you invent because I could use that. And by the way, your pussycat is so precious ! You have gained a follower.

It was so encouraging to hear you say you struggle with food storage containers. I’ve tried decluttering multiple times but I get SO stuck there. My mom and grandma passed on genuine Tupperware to me and I’ve got like.. cupboards and cupboards. Like enough for 10 families. Even after binge watching minimal mom, my husband had to go in there and physically put the stuff in the time will tell bin for me. It was extremely draining and emotional for me. The cupboard feels so much better, but I’m dreading going to the bin and finally letting go. Its such a weird attachment and I wish I understood why I am like this… thank you… it helps to know I’m not alone with that!

You can also use the chili pot for other stuff then just chili. That was something i know should just be general knowledge but when i started decluttering realizing wait I can use this for other things... I can break up sets... I can go without this item because this other one can do it as well as something else.. and for me that was a game changer

I've only just discovered you! I'm struggling to become a recovering hoarder, but am making (slow) progress. What you have been saying in the videos that I've watched is really striking a chord and for once I feel that I'm not alone! I won't buy the book, as I'm already fairly well off for books on decluttering (🙄😃), but it's really useful to hear how you approach the workbook. Thank you

Regarding the pots & pans...if you cook a lot, you do need more than 4 pots & pans because some things do better in this or that pot. I've got 2 small antique Dutch ovens from my grandmother's (I think?), I don't use them, but I could depending on the recipe. But I do try to keep my cooking equipment more on the minimal-ish side. I was looking for a stainless steel frying pan because we didn't have one and I don't like putting non stick in the oven, extra problem was I wanted a lid for it, 99% of the ones I found were in giant pot sets, or were no name brands I had no confidence in or no lid. Now I could've bought an entire new pot set because that was the easy way to reach my goal...but my current ones are in good condition, I didn't want to store extra pots or fuss with selling stuff. So I found one at the restaurant supply store (and a lid 😁!), was a bit more than I wanted to pay, but it wasn't the $200 that all clad was priced at either. (Yes, I was frustrated enough that I considered all clad...and yes there are positive reasons to get it, but I didn't want to spend $200 on a frying pan!) I have decided I don't want an air fryer (it's just a tiny oven but too many parts to wash!), I probably don't want a pressure cooker, I'd love to replace the 40 year old microwave and the toaster with a toaster oven, but beyond that, maybe an ice cream maker, perhaps a better blender (despite only using it once a year...) I don't want a bread machine, no to sous vide, no to a waffle iron, no to a pancake griddle (I have an electric frying pan that has uses beyond pancakes & French toast). I don't want a rice cooker or electric veggie steamer or rotisserie. And if these tools work for you great! But I see them as (mostly) a bunch of one trick ponies that are heavy and a nuisance to store (and I don't want them on my counter) while my large sauce pan or oven can do the same thing/s for many of these gadgets.

It's really interesting to think about why people get more attached to food containers than pots and pans. I think it's because no matter how much (or little) you cook, you are just going to need about two pans and 4 pots for each family, plus they are very sturdy and last a long time. In your mind "the ideal you" is going to need a lot of containers to be able to cook a lot, prep meals, be the perfect parent and save money. Containers also break and wear out easely, so "the ideal you" better have a lot of spare ones on hand for when you decide to cook something.

The way I organized my food containers was I put all the bottoms and all the tops together. And then put them inside a bigger plastic container that I then pull out from the cupboard to get what I need. I do t need to pull everything out to get something from the back. :)
