A Hoarder's Heart

We had another hectic work week but that didn’t stop us from doing daily DeClutters in this master bedroom. Whether it was 10 minutes a day or two hours a day, we were able to open up more spaces that way we can get closer to the official painting and remodeling video reveal!

A suggestion for hubby's funko-pop toys, perhaps he should put a floating shelf near his gym set up in the basement to display them.

Hey! Many have commented that they store their most important documents in a fireproof emergency safe for a quick grab. If you should decide do that, please remember that, even though it might be easy to grab, nothing is more important than your life! I work on an ambulance and I have seen enough people suffering severe burns because they "just wanted to grab that one important thing". Please, value your life, not your paperwork!

Agreed. I'd rather have my highly fireproof and well positioned safe that I'd trust in an actual fire; I'd just get out. (Also, what if there was a fire when nobody was home to grab the documents?) I do like that although it's heavy, it's portable enough for an emergency evacuation situation where you need to get out pretty fast, but you probably have an extra 5 minutes to put the safe in the car.

Just noting, people have been able to get duplicate documents fairly easily after a fire. My in laws were evacuated in California and their safe melted in a very hot fire that destroyed their house. It’s the photos and sentimental stuff they were sad to lose. Still, family shared their copies of a lot of photos, and we found some articles and things about her show-biz career online. Saving your life is the most important thing. Stuff can be replaced.

Keeping the bedroom dusted makes a huge difference to the air quality in the room when you are sleeping, worth having surfaces clear so they can be wiped down regularly. I have a carry basket with sprays and cloths that moves around the house with me so I'm not delving in the cupboard all the time.

So so appreciate you sharing parts of both of your declutter journeys with us, Ms. Heart!! 💕 Feeling positivity ✨ with how much progress you’ve made with each of these videos. Reminded me to be brave enough 💪🏼 to face the items that I’ve buried, so I can take out and care for the core sentimental ones... 💝 And that it’s okay to spend time to open up my things-releasing the guilt, so I know when I’m ready. Kept getting stuck, but now I understand better where that feeling is coming from. Thank you thank you 😊

This inspires me to get our bedroom decluttered, we have piles of stuff also, around edges of room and now invading middle space as well, it's a nightmare. Given me inspiration to get decluttering. Like you, it's 20 years of stuff. I bought a fireproof small safe where I put all important birth and marriage certs, passports etc. Its 10 inch square so doesn't take up much room. My 16 year old got a new bed yesterday, we were so proud to get rid of loads from underneath old bed. She still has loads of cuddly toys which make her room look untidy, got her some plastic underbed boxes also.

That’s what I hate about decluttering, finding things I should have taken care of a long time ago, like your gifts cards. I don’t mind getting rid of things but it’s hard finding things you should have used all this time and wasted it. That’s the hardest part for me. 💜

We have a small bedroom so we have a 12 drawer captains bed, it has been wonderful. (a little on the tall side but worth it for the floor space) It would also allow you to remove a dresser and get a tall wardrobe to give your hubby some more hanging space, also if you want to keep a tv in the bedroom, you should see about getting a wall mount, to clear off the top of the dresser. (First time commenting) I hope you have success with the bedroom and it motivates you to continue on to the basement so you can create a play space for your kids as well as areas for you and your husband. Hopefully in the future you will be able to have a space where you will feel comfortable to put the majority of your sentimental items together, in stead of different areas of the house. Also this has probably been mentioned before but putting some sentimental items in a shadowbox, like your my little ponies not only gets it off the floor, but allows you to see them. If it's something your husband would rather not have displayed like that you might be able to do it ounce the basement is done.

I agree with everyone regarding a fire box for the important documents. Another thing I would recommend, when you’re ready, is to start going through your clothes and shoes once the season ends and figure out what you’re actually wearing. This way you can simplify you storage even more and start keeping everything in your room all year round. I would also suggest as someone else mentioned to make sure your husband has his own space to keep his items in the room or closet. This way he has his space and you have yours. If you start to creep into his, it’s time to declutter. Great job over all❤️

Hey I wanted to mention to you the clutter fairy podcast She also has a KZbin channel I like the podcast though because you can just listen to it without having to look at anything while you're going through things. Anyhow I really think that you would enjoy her She covers lots of different ways of thinking of things. Things that might be holding you back and also I think that her tips can be helpful for hoarders so I wanted to pass it along. She talks about handling large areas or making your home safe or clearing things out. I've been listening to it a lot lately and I've been getting a lot of value from it and so has another family member who holds on to a lot. It may be another great source of inspiration for you. ❤️😊

For important paperwork I store it in my desk drawer in hanging files. Each member of my family has their own folder to hold their documents, there is also a folder for my husband and my co-file, one for the pets, car stuff, life insurance, home insurance, taxes paperwork for this year. These are the files that I want access to regularly and declutter once a year when the new years paperwork comes in. Any LONG-term paperwork goes in a separate banker box. That holds all the things I don’t ever really need to reference but can’t get rid of, like mortgage paperwork or warranty information. Then there is a 3rd small file box for complete tax paperwork. I found out how many years of tax paperwork I am required to keep and each year when I add a new year of taxes to the box, I take out the oldest one to shred. You are making such great progress!!

I put all my important documents in a little storage bin in my office. Ideally I would like to get a fire proof box to keep that stuff in, but until then the storage bin works fine. It's small, like the size of a binder, and has a lid. Inside the bin, I have folders to separate different types of documents like bank stuff, car documents, vet records, etc. A little accordion thing like you have but bigger for documents I also think would be a great idea instead of individual folders.

Unlike many here all my important paperwork is kept in a ring binder / folder in those separate clear pockets you can get. It makes it super easy if you ever need to find a birth certificate or your insurance documents However every time I store something new in the folder I take a photo of the document and store it in the cloud. That was if there was ever a flood/fire or other catastrophe when I wasn't at home I still have a copy of all of those documents available to me. I am also sure that if there was ever a fire while I was at home I would forget to grab the folder anyway in the panic.

Good job! So many little projects tackled here that make a huge impact!! A thought... (cause I always have some 🙃). I think it would be a great challenge to continue to work on the closet and get it to where hubby has half of the closet space. The whole upper shelf, one of the shoe shelves, half of the rod space. I do think storing seasonal items away will help immensely with that, but seasonal isn’t just winter/summer! Are you in the time of your life right now where you need to have immediate access to your bag of bags? Your dress ups that are taking a nap due to covid? Those can be rotated out and stored until you are ready to use them regularly again. I think it’s really important to make sure that each individual has their space in their room. I think you are taking great strides to reclaim to room for hubby and I think he will make more effort in keeping up his items when he has that ownership.

You should put your important papers and documents in a lockbox. I have a pretty good sized one from walmart and it was about 25 dollars and it looks like those metal cosmetic train cases. It is found in the office section. It is great ,and for people like us,who have alot of clutter, and add, if there is an emergency and you have to grab it quick and leave, its big enough to spot and grab. Hope this helps!

I put the valuables, specifically the important papers on a fire resistant safe. Since you seem to have room in the basement that might be a good place for the safe. Other less important paperwork goes in a lateral file from hanging folders. Depending on how much paperwork you have there are different solutions. There are smaller portable plastic containers for hanging files at Staples if you only have a few.

The important documents we use a letter size plastic accordion folder (only a few slots) and keep it in a known spot we can both access (for us the shelf next to my journals, my sister keeps it in her safe). We only use it for official documents like you are talking about. Birth cert,, passports, marriage cert, power of attorney docs, living will docs, and wills. Think Marie Kondo with her single sealable folder.

I keep important documents in a larger accordion folder. A file box works well too. A fireproof box is best, though.

I keep all those important papers in a small safe in my master closet. We also keep some cash in there so in the event of an emergency we can just grab the folder out of there and go. My parents keep theirs in a locking filing cabinet. I don't think there's only one way!

First time I’ve commented and I’ve watched every single one of your videos, I am obsessed and you make me laugh so much🧡🧡 I keep my super important paperwork in an expanding paperwork organiser, make sure it’s fire proof, mine has a handle on the top to be super easy to grab! I keep my passport, birth certificate, education certificates, car, home paperwork in there, sectioned out!! Chloe🧡

I have a binder for all my vital documents. I place all the items for each person in their own section. Now that I have grandcubs I add any of their vital info with their parent section.
