You are assuming that cow farts and burps are the problem, actually its is mainly the industrial processes used to rear, then the fuel etc used for the distribution after slaughter.Huge awathes of rain forest have been cut down to grow Soya and also to rear cattle on - double whammy in that you remove the trees that capture carbon and introduce more farters - the soy is used to feed intensively reared cattle, these feedyards are often massive, use huge quantities of feedstock, all of which is delivered using fossil fuels, the cattle are then off to massive slaughter houses, again moved by truck, after they are chipped up, moved in refrigerated trucks. more fuel, etc, etc. If an Impala or Bison was killed in the old days, before these industrial scale mass killings, they were eaten nearby, there was no refrigeration, none of it was wasted ( estimates vary but at least 5-10% is food in the western world is wasted and is thrown away) so very different processes back then to what we do now. As we now feed all sorts of weird stuff to cattle now, not just grass like they evolved with we cant tell whether they fart more or less than a historical Giraffe, so even if we ignore all the industrial impact stuff, we cant tell whether your reasoning is right or not!! Interesting though, I hadn't thought about it as a Biomass calculation, nice one!

Then water cycle may be more important than the carbon cycle - but grasses pump more carbon int the soil than trees do. The key is that the grasses MUST be pruned by grazing and/or tramples to the ground (so soil microbes can digest them) BEFORE they become over-mature and oxidize. That is what is happening when you see brown, dry grasses. Remember - the soil life, the plants, and the animals all evolved together and need each other.
@Jefferdaughter6 жыл бұрын
Grasses 'farm' the soil biology - creating and putting into the soil the particular sugars *carbon) that will preferentially feed the soil life that they need at certain points in their life cycle, or to help them to cope with certain stressors, like drought. Humans tend to think in terms of 'either/or'... 'do eat dog'... 'this against that'. In the natural world, everything is interacting in multiple directions at once. Yes, there is competition, yet when we look more closely, symbiosois and co-operation are far more common.

@robinlillian94714 жыл бұрын
The Earth doesn't care whether you agree or disagree with physics. Attempting to ignore the laws of physics has consequences which will ultimately kill you. CO2 acts like a greenhouse & makes the Earth warmer. It's a FACT that you can't change. The only "scientists" who "disagree" are being paid to by fossil fuel corporations. None of this has anything whatever to do with ground water, tillage, or soil depletion. The underground aquifer under the plains is being used up to raise crops. When it runs out, the land will become a dust bowl until/unless wild grasses grow back. The plains are obviously a grassland, only suitable for raising bison or other herbivores in the long term
@Ron_the_Skeptic4 жыл бұрын
@@robinlillian9471, I don't know where you get your information, but it's not completely correct. Even your claim "The only "scientists" who "disagree" are being paid to by fossil fuel corporations." is rather suspect since while Arrhenius believed CO2 was a greenhouse gas that could affect earth's temperature, Angstrom disagreed because his experiments indicated CO2 was not a major driver of temperature. I suspect you have no proof that Angstrom was paid by oil companies or "fossil fuel corporations". Your claim could be turned around because it is far more likely that those scientists who claim CO2 is responsible for the "greenhouse effect" are either being paid by "green energy" or are in fear of losing their income for not affirming the orthodoxy. Whether you look at CO2 vs. temperature over the last 600 million years, or just the last century, it should be clear to you that CO2 is not the control knob it was reported to be by main stream media. It will not cause catastrophic warming or any of the other things media report "Scientists say …". If you did a little bit of research, you might discover that even those who believe CO2 causes a "greenhouse effect" believe that for every doubling of CO2 there is only a unit increase in the effect, which means that by 400 ppm the effect of adding more CO2 is quite negligible. And you might discover examination of data from weather balloons shows there is no "greenhouse effect". If you did even more research, you might also discover that as CO2 increases plants grow faster while at the same time using less water. Most commercial greenhouse operations pump CO2 into their buildings to increase yield and decrease water consumption. In the larger world, NASA photos show increased plant growth around the arid regions which is due to CO2 increasing from 300 ppm to 400 ppm. If we could achieve 1600 ppm, we could improve crop yield and reduce the reliance on ground water.

Im a gardener, not a farmer, but our worlds are the same but with the pressures of cash flow, business rates and cheap imports pressing hard on them, I have an easy life. But one thing we share: there is, in the world, an enormous quantity of animal waste...from humans to ruminants to fowl AND vegetable waste in many places....cut grass to leaf fall. This is mother natures plan: plants and animals feed on the waste of others.An oak tree is nourished by its own leaf fall and minerals in the rain. I garden with horse manure and vegetable compost and make liquid feed from it too. This is a closed system...nearly so. The problem is that both animals and plants are being poisoned by humans in search of larger, quicker short term financial gain. Cows full of weight gain antibiotics, growth hormone etc, plants with systemic herbicides such as glyphosate and both rained on by industrial rain. It cant go on; humans are contriving in their own destruction. It can take years to get poor soil into good heart but only a season to waste it all away. Google "Ben Falk" and see where agriculture can grow.

That's gonna take a concerted PR campaign, and lots of money to combat the for profit investments of producers of movies like GC into pea protein factories and industrial scale monocropping sectors. These hucksters have BILLIONS at play right now in the vegan marketing machine. James Cameron's financial advisor said, "Veganism is like the internet in 1994." The plant based crowd should keep in mind that most of the veg and fruits which are available today from agriculture are the result of selective breeding. Nature didn't invent them by itself. Most archaic wild forms are barely edible and too time consuming to find for too little yield. Makes me wonder how natural a vegan diet in the 21st century really is. The domesticated farm animals are not that different from their wild cousins. I eat very little red meat, first off because it's too expensive in my neck of the woods and then I don't actually enjoy the taste but the video makes biochemical sense. There's no such thing as essential carbohydrates for humans, only essential amino and fatty acids. The little glucose you need for the cells without mitochondria can be made by the liver through gluconeogenesis. The rest can also run on ketones metabolised from dietary fat or your own body fat.

It's surprising that these cows have a vegetarian diet unless you consider faeces as part of their consumption. Is a cow a vegetable?

Why don’t we raise horses for consumption? At least in Australia, Canada, USA, and Europe. The Norse had two sacred traditions they held dear and would not give up to Christian oppressors-something with babies that I don’t want to get into, and to keep eating horse meat. Why is it banned and in some places illegal to sell horse meat?

Great video, saved to faves! Alfafa to the cows in Cali??
@opinionsarelike38655 жыл бұрын
This all sounds very convincing however most cows nowadays are fed corn, grains and soy beans to pump up their weight and/or milk output. This does not agree with their bowels and microbiome so it requires anti acid additives and antibiotics and the resulting beef and dairy are a lot less nutritious and not so harmless. They are in some countries also fed growth hormones. This story just tells the story of the romantic herd grazing the endless prairies, hardly representing today’s practices of industrial farming.
@Lavasalsa15 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The WAY in which industrial farms are raising cattle for commercial sale is INCORRECT. Herbivore ruminants should be fed GRASS. Producers should study "mob grazing" as a way to renovate their pastures and raise their cows.

Why our pancreas secrete amylase, if our body doesn't need carbs?
@adnanadnan123376 жыл бұрын
Lynn Roberts the liver needs carbs to function specially when it comes to hormonal conversion. Thyroid t4 to t3 (active form) fat and protein can't provide that. Honey, sugar and seasonal fruit the best source of carbs.

We must love it how we think as humans we know so much & factually... Historically far past any current known recordings, our earth has always had enough resources to support the continued growth of our species. Saying that anything is unsustainable is often times manufactured market shortage to increase capital gains & throttle economies. That being said, many of the current agricultural practices will not be sustainable for long. Whether we feel that all sentient life forms have just as much right to live as humans or that we feel meat producers of the world can no longer be trusted is besides the point. For this conversation to even continue with animals as the main course, farming practices must change. Most likely this first means, only using land which is & has been historically arable. No more destruction of forests or changing the use of land to fit ones often overgrown interests. Yes this means many will not farm, however many more will. Can we farm without animals, depends on how we use animals. We can run machinery in place of, we can have animals as pets, friends & helpers that exchange fertilizers for food & attention Yes. Using them mainly for our food needs, also yes. Animals also naturally caretake of the earth when in harmony. Though slaughtering them for our food is not needed. And we know not the yes or no to answer to that last thought. We have not as a global society ever run a large or long enough study, which may never happen. 11 minutes - just saying no to what someone else says does not count as a winning argument. Do we even know what’s good for the planet? Well we can only first look upon ourselves in relation to how we have worked with the earth and how those affects now show results relating to our populations health. What was good for the planet was probably pretty close before the technological advancements starting with coal in the 17th century. After which time we have been blatantly been gutting our planets resources with little concern of surrounding ecosystems or lasting effects. We can see this by more animals being honored with the title of technical extinction or nearing it. On feedstuffs That arable land that is used to produce feedstuffs for cattle to produce meat for humans to eat could be used to raise much more vibrant crops of different types of plants to feed humanity. Thereby using a very large amount of currently farmed land to now strictly feed humans, instead of feeding animals that ends up helping to feed humans. Also, wheat seems a very weak corner stone of the argument here. If we had historically spent far more on developing plant farming technology and the use of a greater variety of that Kingdom for human consumption, the conversation would be completely different. Protein We actually know very little about the needed daily protein intake of humans. Most of the worlds health & diet guideline suggestions are very wrong. This is different for each individual human being. More so most known nutritional science has been skewed and specifically directed relating to industries desires. If science does not needily share plant pesticides compared at all to animal pesticides that they actually create to the public, then why is it even being brought up as an argument? One last thought Peter Ballerstedt, have you ever tried an all vegetable diet for 90 days or more?

Does he not realize that all plants have a profile of both fatty and amino acids? So yes, ruminants do have them in their diet, they just also use their hind or fore-gut fermentation process to convert more of the sugars into fatty acids.

I agree with this guy, but given the diversity of opinions on diet, I think any reasonable person finds himself asking, after hearing people make directly oppositional cases, 'how do I know which one is true? They both sound convincing.' Well, empiricism. The only way to get an empirical answer about which is healthier is to have groups of people eat different diets, and observe which ones live longer, and get sick less. All the diet expertise is attempts to _predict_ which ones _will_ live longer, based on reasoning. And that's fine and good. But evidently, diet and digestion are sufficiently complex that whichever factors/dynamics we focus on might mislead us, and we simply can't take them all into account at once. But reality itself does exactly that. It takes all contributing factors into account. So, you don't need to isolate and master your understanding of all the factors, what they are, and what they do, if you can just do the experiment and observe the end result. After ~30 years now of vegetarianism/veganism, practitioners of those diets don't seem to be any healthier or live any longer than the human average. We can theorize more, adjust our models, make more predictions to say, 'well, we hadn't mastered veggie diets initially, so the benefits were off-set by some malpractice; the new, more scientific veggie diets will result in longer/healthier lives.' We can _say_ that. But those results aren't in yet. We'll have to wait and see. In another 20 years, _if_ those predictions do _not_ prove positive, yet again, no doubt, they'll adjust their models once again and make the same prediction for another 20 years. That's how religions work. But that's also how science works. And maybe they _will_ prove correct. However, in the mean time, we do have empirical data showing that populations that eat meat thrive more. We have to be careful about that, because, for example, they might be eating more meat because they thrive more, rather than thriving more because they eat more meat. And it may not be even reciprocal. But for the time being, the empirical data, the net-result data, is on the side of eating meat. People starve less. They even have higher average IQs. Again, whether cause or effect, we don't know, so it doesn't prove anything. But... the empirical data, such as it is, falls on that side. The _predictions_ of the dietitians profession, fall mostly on the other side. I don't trust their predictions, their expertise; I don't view them as authoritative. They have _no proven track record of success._ So, whence their authority?? But that's just me.
