Disney continues to pump out content onto Disney Plus after massive investments into making Star Wars and Marvel streaming series a thing. They are now… a thing. Ahsoka starring Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano has now been released, and it exists!
Ahsoka definitely raises some questions. Like are lightsabers even dangerous anymore? Does everyone just have a bunch of force powers? Is Thrawn really a tactical genius? What was the point of this being eight episodes?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to Ahsoka!

Can we just acknowledge the biggest crime of this show? If you take Ahsoka out of this story, not that much changes. Thrawns robots would have still found the map. They probably would have figured out how to open it. And they would have got him back at which point the Republic would have pulled their heads out of the sand and acknowledged he's returned. The only difference is Ezra who seems like he could have easily stowed away on the ship on the way back and who admittedly is going to give the Republic a heads up that Thrawns' back. Which given their track record, the Republic still won't believe it.. And even if we acknowledge that Ezra coming back is because of Ahsoka's actions, it's more because of Sabine's actions. I cannot believe I predicted this was going to happen when they announced this show two years ago. If a show is named after a specific character in Star Wars, that is now a dead guarantee that the show won't actually be about them

When it comes right down to it, there's zero empirical evidence that life is better than death. We're just making assumptions and running on inertia. No one's actually come back with a first hand report on the subject after all - and no, a few moments of technical brain death doesn't qualify. What kind of basis for judgement would that be? Your first few seconds of independent life after you're a womb-parasite aren't typical of the rest of your life either, especially if some random stranger immediately starts slapping you around to remind you to breathe like an old Warner Brothers cartoon. Plenty of religions claim that if you do what they tell you dying is definitely where you get to the good part, even. Funny how none of their leaders offer to go first and talk about speeding up the queue for everyone else.

So I grew up with the prequel movies which I enjoyed as a kid but then swiftly forgot about as I got older. Then I stumbled across Clone Wars when it was on Netflix years ago and it completely changed how I felt about these characters. Anakin is actually incredibly likeable and you get to see more of a gradual progression towards his fall to dark side compared to the whiplash we get in the movies (RIP Jedi kiddies). In Clone Wars the emotional pay-offs are so well done in comparison to the movies. I balled my eyes out watching that final episode and a number of times throughout the show... Never cried or cared much about anything during the movies (sorry Jedi kiddies). Ultimately Clone Wars is about Ahsoka's journey though and despite initial impressions of her in the earlier episodes, she gradually grew to become one of my favorite Star Wars characters ever... Eh yeah, so that's over now. Thanks Disney. Nah I'm kidding, I'm just gonna pretend this Ahsoka series doesn't exist. It's actually pretty easy to do, I've been pretending that 'check engine' light in my car doesn't exist for ages now. It's been working out just fine for me so far 🤪

The first three Star Wars films were great, because George Lucas wasn't a control freak and listened to other ideas. He primarily was concerned with getting the special effects right, including the sounds, which is where he was revolutionary. But he didn't write the plot or script, and his first wife came up with the final edit. With the prequels, he assumed full creative control, and he kinda sucked at it. But with the extended universe stuff, once again it shined, because he allowed creative freedom; the clone wars show and Knights of the Old Republic are great examples. Unfortunately, it seems Disney executives are far more control hungry and generally incompetent than George Lucas ever was. A huge shock to those of us who were critical of the way George had handled the prequels. I can't help but wonder if he sold to the worst people as revenge for those who criticised his previous work.

My theory is that a lot of the weird decisions, especially in Filoni helmed shows, comes down to his history in the animated Star Wars tv series where there was a little (or a lot) more leeway for silliness and where outsized characters expressions could convey moods far more effectively than live actors. I see a lot of the DNA of Rebels and Clone Wars in the Disney Live Actions shows . . . but what works in a fairly low deaf 22 minute episodic adventure, feels very underwhelming in a prestige streaming series.
@aidanthornton173
@aidanthornton173 3 ай бұрын
@@Bustermachine I can understand that in a cartoon completely, but in a live action setting it makes everyone look stupid. Much like the scene where ahsoka knows that sabine and ezra are in trouble, spots Balen standing all alone, minding his own business. Then jumps down in front of him, starts a small duel, only to tell him that she doesn't have time to deal with him. It's because Disney Star Wars' actual problem is not 'wokeness', or what not, it's the fact that it's powered almost purely by callbacks. Almost everything about Disney Star Wars is founded in sapping meaning from previous Star Wars installments. Much as the Disney Live Action remakes are built on sapping meaning from the animated classics. Everything about Ahsoka is about waving the payoff in everyone's face, and then bum rushing for that pay off through a series of big shiny action set pieces.
@jlighter1
@jlighter1 3 ай бұрын
@Bustermachine Really this. It’s not just Disney, either, it’s all the major production companies with the “Let’s try to make this happen again, it clearly makes money” while pointing at something that worked 30, 20, even 5 years ago. To much risk aversion, too much nostalgia fishing, too many callbacks, too little freedom to fail. And to be clear, a lot of this (my perspective at least) comes from the producer levels focusing on bottom line and red/black ink overriding or negatively shaping the other levels where the creativity is happening. Not exclusively, but “Think of the shareholders” is what’s driving quality down.

I remember there used to be a formula for coming up with a Star Wars name. I don't remember exactly but something to the effect of putting the first 3 letters of your first name together with the last 3 letters of your last name and that would be the first name of your Star Wars character and then you'd like start spinning around in a circle really really fast for 15 seconds. Once you stop, you open your mouth and the first sound you make is the last name of your Star Wars character, I think.

I’ve said it since the show was announced that this is final breaking point for Star Wars. Well Disney, congratulations, you managed to finally break a life long Star Wars fan. Even after the Sequels, Kenobi, Boba Fett and Mando Season 3 I had hope in this show because I love the characters but you fundamentally managed to make one of the best Star Wars villains in history a mustachioed twirling Bond villain. Dammit Lucasfilm. Great video as always my man.

Love how the impact and threat of a lightsaber has been so lessened that a common cold can keep someone out of action longer now. And while I hated the idea of mitochlorians, I'm starting to think it's better than you can use the force if you just wish really, really hard
@RelativelyBest
@RelativelyBest 6 ай бұрын
Eh, I don't mind lightsaber stabs being survivable since that's actually pretty realistic. A hole through your body isn't nearly as lethal as you'd think as long as your heart doesn't get hit, especially when you don't have to worry about blood loss, and Star Wars medical technology should totally be good enough to fix something like that. As for the midichlorians, they were a minor yet surprisingly vital plot device that everyone misunderstood and overreacted to. Outside of specifically the plot of The Phantom Menace, they're not really important at all.
@Cheshire_Grins
@Cheshire_Grins 6 ай бұрын
@@RelativelyBest I'll admit I was speaking mostly in hyperbole. I agree with the stab not being lethal as long as vital organs are avoided and blood loss is managed. I always assumed the lightsaber cauterized the wounds anyway which would cover blood. It's more the regularity of people getting stabbed and just coming back no problem makes me feel the weapon or the user is ineffective. It's a bigger problem that isn't exclusive with Star Wars but it lessens the risk and therefore loses tension. The midochlorians I only took issue with the idea that without them (or without a certain amount, I'm not clear on it) you couldn't be force sensitive at all. What I mean here is I'd rather take the worst case of needing them to have access to the force at all over being so capable of doing the force feats in the Disney era Star Wars with no real training. Again, I just feel it takes something that should be impressive and lowers its value when it feels more like a character just levels up and unlocks full force powers.

@@RelativelyBest Are you serious? It's more than "just a hole" it's a freaking shaft of plasma hot enough to melt a 3 foot thick blast door, her insides would have vaporized, her organs would have literally exploded, and even if she could have been saved by some insane medical tech or magical force healing power NO ONE was close enough to administer them. No human being should be able to survive being run through with a light saber, period. And, on a side note, all the bad gal had to do was a flick of the wrist and she would have cut Sabine in half, there was literally no good reason to withdraw the light saber cleanly. The show was just pure stupidity on so many levels and this is only one of probably hundreds of examples.
