6:10 things were referred to as AI long before ChatGPT and other deep learning algorithms existed. You aren't lying. People just get confused because of the modern version. It's like when a kid sees a rotary phone and says, "This isn't a phone"

I still call it a phone, just not a smartphone
@brawldude26565 күн бұрын

Nah anything not-deep learning or NN related is not AI, the guys behind the book are wrong, how am I supposed to scam people with "rule-based algorithms"?
@an_asp10 күн бұрын
As an AI researcher working on stuff largely unrelated to neural networks and machine learning, I can endorse what you discussed in the video regarding the definition of AI. AI as a field has been around since the dawn of computing, and covers a vast expanse of methodologies. The term "AI" doesn't really describe a specific technology so much as it describes a use case: AI is the study of enabling autonomous decision-making in machines. There's a million ways to do that, from tree search to evolutionary computing to neural networks to hand-designed heuristics. Nobody ever had a problem talking about the AI of the computer players in Mario Party, and those probably aren't much more complex than what you're doing! Just with less computer vision and more code to go easy on the player.
@BrisingrFan559 күн бұрын
It is seriously a little frustrating for me, as someone who worked with a TPG (Tangled Programming Graph) AI in my senior year of college just before generative AI became widely known. Dismissing hand-crafted AI as "just an algorithm" like deep learning AI is substantially different irks me. Deep learning AI, and all LLMs and other 'AI' are self-reinforcing algorithms. All AI is algorithmic. It requires an input, measures values, and gives a deterministic output that will be the same every time for that iteration of the algorithm. I'm sure it's just a symptom of people who are not experts using the terminology inexactly, what they mean is that this algorithm isn't self-reinforcing (or they'd probably say "learning") and thus not AI, even though that still is not technically correct.
@QueenofTNT9 күн бұрын
It really sucks that the overuse of generative AI LLMs being pushed by a few annoying billionaires and corporations is causing the entire idea of AI and anything under its definition to get a bad rap. Especially since it *can* be used to help people with mundane tasks, such as giving somebody writing prompts, doing simulations for protein folding, and having use in medical imaging to catch little things a technician might not. But nah, billionaire techbros said let's use this power to generate propaganda and incorrectly proportioned anime titty waifus (with enough energy consumption to accelerate our water use beyond capacity) so we can make money and nothing else! Sigh...

I mean, AI literally means artificial intelligence, it doesn't matter how advanced it is. You are creating an intelligence that knows how to play Mario Party DS, and that intelligence is artificial. I don't see what people aren't getting.
@minhuang88488 күн бұрын
It doesn't even have to satisfy the (arbitrary and weird) constraints we internalize about intelligence, like being capable of human language or anything of that sort. Hence why we've called NPCs or crude, pre-noughties agents in games AI regardless of how limited they were in actual, tangible benchmarks - nobody cares about any of this when we all perfectly understand what someone meant by it. If you really need nuanced and varied terminology, just add descriptors on top. If I specify that I'm doing ablation studies on an LLM, that's about as clear-cut as me telling you that I pummeled the stock Starcraft II AI. Of course that never stopped (seemingly willfully) obtuse folks to make a huge drama about models "not truly being intelligent" or just "predicting the next token in a given sequence of data" - yeah ok, sure. Why again would that mean I can't use established, ubiquitously understood, and mostly unambiguous terminology again? For all we care, AI is the simplest set of heuristics we can come up with. Hell, it's even completely formless if we need it to be, might as well be an emergent feature of interpersonal communication or something to that effect; basically, anything that is some sort of substrate for computation of any sort could be what we've always called "artificially intelligent." The only thing that changed is that we now actually have agents that far outclass just about anyone who throws a fit about the term being too loosely defined, so eh, it is what it is I suppose.
@currentquiet95917 күн бұрын
Artificial Intelligence, in the way we define intelligence does not exist. Its all semantics and optics. As long as you aren't using generative AI there's no problem with me.

AI existed long before chatGPT and AI art and such, people are getting it confused with how we think of AI nowadays and look down upon it. We refer to things like AI in video games being how characters and stuff are set to behave, they dont learn, they just react to what is going on based on what their AI tells them to do. Some games also made selling points by claiming to have adaptive AI, not just good, challenging AI, such as Hello Neighbor which had the one selling point of adaptive AI and people were extremely hyped for it. The term AI existed long before chatGPT and stuff so your little rant is completely justified. I also look forward to seeing more automated minigames!

Interesting video! But I feel I lost my last brain cell with that first minigame. Daaang though, what a whoosh in the last one! And thanks for the explanation on AI! As an artsy type, I've been pushing back against AI in the sense of generative models like for text, images, and video, but indeed, there is AI that is not those things, and I'm not going to be one to deny that. Also, it might just be me, but it seems like Waluigi wins by doing absolutely everything.
@RiesenpiIz10 күн бұрын
The mario ai also is probably rule based like almost all ai in any game i.e. minecraft. One could also argue that deep learning models are also only scripts, where you trail and error the inputs on al large scale.

6:10 the problem here is that you're right in the technical sense but not the modern linguistic sense. To most modern people, "AI" refers only to deep learning based AI and not rules based, like what the *in game* CPU AI players are preforming. the problem therefore becomes one of effectively communicating that you are using a subset of AI in a simple way. I'd say "algorithmic AI" would be the most direct way of communicating it. communication anxiety based anger is fascinating.

As a fellow programmer, I've gotten used to using the term "machine learning" instead of "AI" because it makes people less angry / anxious. Though even in your case it's not "learning" for some of these mimigames, it's being iteratively tweaked. So I'm not sure if it even fits the classical definition of AI. 😅 Besides, the YT algorithm 😎

Regarding the segment about the definition of AI: If what you made for this video doesn't count as AI, then clearly Mario Party DS's own CPUs also don't count as AI - heck, most CPU opponents in any game wouldn't count as AI, and many games refer to them as AI players. You don't need a genetic algorithm to make a program act intelligently, just a bit of problem solving. That aside, love this series so far and excited to see the eventual full game AI!
