My dad has been gone for 20 years and this was his favorite story. It was the early 60's I was probably about five I don't remember how old, but I do remember doing it. I am 63 now. My dad was painting the house and he left the paint open in the garage with brushes and rollers. I started painting everything, my feet, the walls, the stairs, the driveway, his shoes and boots. Luckily I did not paint the car. He came back to get more paint and caught me in the act. Their were little foot prints all over the place, we always went barefoot in the summer. I was afraid that I was in big trouble but he started laughing at me and thought it was hilarious. I remember getting a bath with gasoline. He would splash a little on me and wash it off. Of course it was oil base paint and probably lead based too. Only one of us got in trouble that day, my mom was pissed at him for leaving the paint open. Needless to say the little foot prints were permanent in the concrete floor. When I was in Junior High we bought a new house and moved. He always said that if he could have brought the garage floor with us when we moved he would have, he loved the foot prints on the floor. He always told that story and my mother would always give him the look. I miss him a lot and miss him telling the story. What I learned that day, I hate to paint.

Like you, I've always been drawn to the tools. At 2 years old, so my parents tell me, My dad comes home from a long day at work, grabs speghetti and meat sauce from the stove, goes to sit on the kitchen chair and ends up on the floor with dinner all over him. I guess I took all the screws out of the chair and put them all neatly under the cabinet. My parents had a good laugh at that all their lives, telling that story. Fun hearing others that are similar.

On a recent video you asked “why we watch”. I can only speak for my self but I watch you, Matt, Paul, Rory and others because 1) I admire your talents, work ethic and skills; 2) I enjoy how authentic you all seem to be; 3) I enjoy the banter between you guys; 4) I enjoy how you all seem to collaborate with each other and support each other; 5) You all remind me of what America is really about. As a 5-year-old, I used to go around the house making sure the electrical socket plates were tightly screwed into the wall. Then at 10 years old, I built a Heathkit radio station. That led to a career in office machine repair in '78 and retired after 42 years in the industry. As a parent, you never know what simple stuff your kids do will lead into a lifelong career.

When I was a little kid, Dad gave me actual tools to keep in my toy box instead of buying me toy tools. My mom tells me I used to take the household door latches off and try to disassemble my grandmother's prosthetic leg. I don't really remember doing that, but what I do remember is the Stanley hammer amongst those tools. I'm 42, now and have worked as a carpenter for for over 20 years. The hammer I still use today was the one that was in my toy box as a toddler. That hammer, and the ability to use it, has bought me numerous vehicles, my house, fed my family and pets, etc. I feel happy every day when I pick it up.

Funny my mom said the same about my brother…from a young age my brother took things apart and put him back together. He was a flight mechanic in the navy…a machinist…an engine builder for race cars and a driver. Being his litter sister he but me to work helping in the garage and taught me the love of cars.

It was Christmas time with the big family gift being a console stereo of about 5 feet in length. The mistake my parents made was leaving me alone in the house with tools. Now being a curious little fellow of only 8 years old I decided it would be a good idea to take the stereo apart to see how it was made. Taking it apart was easy, putting it back together was another proposition altogether. At family reunions that story is a favorite, but not for me.

Hey Hillbilly: Old school: we didn't have pullers for pulling the pilot bushing out of the crankshaft. We would pack the whole full of grease and then take an old end shaft with the same size pilot, insert it in the hole and hit it with a hammer a few times. Repack the hole and do it again. The grease would hydraulically push the old pilot bushing out.

I used to work on a 70+ foot schooner in the Caribbean, lots of varnish. We were in English Harbour, Antigua, lots of tourists would visit off the cruise ships. There were certain areas in the dockyard set aside to work on projects that were best done ashore. On this day I was varnishing the boarding staircase which is used to walk on board from the launch. I did my varnishing and left it to dry. When I returned I found fingerprints in the new varnish. I was not a happy chappy. Turns out a taxi driver had deposited a cruise ship passenger near my work place, and she gave in to the temptation of touching the varnish. "It was SOOOOO shiny, I just HAD to touch it" Robby's son was just behaving as a small adult. Just give him a small epoxy project to be proud of.

Used to take all my toys apart because I wanted to know how they worked but never really put them back together until Xmas 1988. I was 8 yrs old and my parents bought me a $100 rc car and back then $100 was like $500 today. I took it apart withing 24 hrs of getting it because I just had to see what the gears looked like on the inside. Well my mom got super p1ssed off and told me she'd never buy another thing for me unless I put it back together. Well I eventually got it back together and working again and several decades later I fix cars for a living and I have 0 college debt🤷‍♂️

I, too, had a curiosity for how things worked. My aunt and uncle gave me a box turtle they had found, and were horrified when I took it apart with a claw hammer to see how it worked. 🤤 At 2 I found out that sticking a screwdriver into a wall socket makes a big noise and bright flash and makes a big black mark on the wall. Dad had a small machine shop, and I was playing on a South Bend lathe at 8 years old, making fake bullets. I always got Erector Sets and Lincoln Logs for Christmas (decades before Legos. I went to the SEMA show in 1989, looking to get into doing a mail order business, probably Suzuki Samurai aftermarket parts. We're talking WAY before the Internet, and when I'd approach suppliers with my idea they would look at me like I was a heretic. In those days the industry was based on manufacturers selling to wholesalers, who would sell to retailers. Nothing else, and any talk of buying stuff and having it SHIPPED to you was just absurd. What are you smokin', Boy? Needless to say, my Suzuki business never took off. But I DID get to take a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon in the days before flights below the rim were banned. Ten feet over the Colorado River at speed was quite the experience!

When I was 7 my mom gave me her old kodak camera. It was 1986 and in Brazil cameras was not common or cheap. This camera had a malfunction in the flash light, but did still working for day light pictures. One day my grandpa pick me up in the school and we went to his house. Grandpa was a big influence and a huge encourager. I said that I would to repair the camera. He look at me, opened the tool box and sit by my side to observe my repair. Of course the camera never became one piece again, but I grow up believing that I could design, build and repair things. Today I'm 43 yo, graduate in mechanical engineering and civil engineering and I teach engineering in a university here in Brazil. I always tell this story to students that I mentoring in Baja SAE competition. If today I'm a good engineer and a good teacher it's because of all encouraging I received, specifically from my grandfather and my mom.

I'm a self-proclaimed Suzuki Samurai 'expert'. The brake piece that had been installed wrong is actually two separate pieces, joined by a rivet. The two parts must swivel freely around the rivet. Most people don't realize this, because they are always seized together by brake dust, and corrosion. The automatic brake adjuster will not function if the two parts are seized. The e-brake also doesn't work well, because the short arm is where the e-brake cables attach.
@BigElCat

You need to install a new assembly each time ($15 each) or modify the assembly by cutting the rivet out and replace with a bolt and shims.

I started when I was little taking VCR's, DVD players, tv's and any other electronics that were broken. I was always trying to figure out how things worked eventhough I had no clue what I was looking at and I didn't have internet at my house when I was that young. I always thought I was going to be an engineer and took automotive classes in high school because I wanted to be an automotive engineer. I started going to college for engineering and quickly realized that I hated being in a classroom all day and in turn would hate being in an office sitting in front of a computer all day. I started working at a Ford dealership and my automotive repair career started at that point. I now work at my family shop with me set to take control in the future and for the most part just diagnose cars. I still get in there and get my hands dirty every now and again, but in the area that I am in grease monkey/parts changers are easy to find. It's the guys that can actually diagnose the cars and get it right so that we can build that trust with the customer that is hard to find here and as of right now I am that guy. So I now stay pretty clean most of the time and only really do repairs when the shop is slow enough to warrant me doing a repair. We need young guys/girls in this industry that are smart and have a willingness to learn and use their brains. This industry is is only going to get smaller and smaller in terms of the repair parts as more and more electronics are installed on vehicles.

Speaking of parts quality, I'm in the process of rebuilding an 06 Focus. I've gone through 3 sets of parts store control arms, two parts store axles, three sets of parts store outer tie rods, and 4 upstream oxygen sensors...and the car has not even moved under its own power yet. All of these parts were either manufactured incorrectly, were bad out of the box, or the parts stores had the part listed incorrectly. Since the shutdown two years ago, I've noticed a significant issue with manufacturing quality of aftermarket parts. I'd honestly prefer to use OEM Motorcraft parts, but everything is on an indefinite backorder.

I'm from a family of architects, builders & designers so I grew up drawing, sketching & doodling on just about anything... dad would draw rough sketches on the garage wall above his workbench, mum would come back from a lunch meeting with a client's draft floor plan drawn on a napkin. While most kids would get in trouble for drawing on the walls of their bedroom, I could draw wherever I liked as long as I didn't get it on the furniture (or use their expensive architectural drafting pens!). So my parents didn't know whether to be angry or proud when they discovered that five-year-old me had been drawing plans for my dream cubby house in the one place I _didn't_ have permission to draw... the underside of our dining room table! Pride definitely won out because they told that story to just about everybody... and the huge doll house that my dad built for me a year or so later had some suspiciously familiar design elements in the floor plan! 😂

Well, when I was 3, that was 53 years ago, we had a 1963 Chevy Impala. Yes the car was six years old. Well lets say at three, I started my first car customizing project. I decided that the car would look better with lets say a smoother, more less shiny appearance. So with out any tools, I removed every bit of side chrome molding on the entire car. Mom was anything but impressed. I guess, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

When I was 5 years old I put together a Radio Shack AM radio kit without being able to read the instructions. My parents were upset that I [potentially] ruined it by doing it myself in about 30 mins. They double checked the work over 2 or 3 nights to find it was perfect and worked just fine. Over 35 years later and I'm still building radios, among other electronics.

Well dude I had a learning moment today. I found out that I'm not welcome at the SEMA show. The professional organizations I worked with welcomed the public so this was a bit of a surprise. Enjoy the show.

I remember when I was around 4 years old, I thought I was going be an electrician and work on the plug in the wall with a fork, got the crap shocked out of me. I ended up fixing cars for a living, lol. I do get nervous working on electric vehicles, especially in the hv battery!

Good vid! Super-power of mine @6-7yo was taking apart electronics, tools, bicycles (clock radios, tape players, vacuums, anything with gears, coaster brake hubs) and being able to put them back together. Was an art/photo guy in HS, now 25+yrs IT, post college. I still take stuff apart, add/tweak/automate and put it back together creatively, just with a keyboard instead of a screwdriver. ;)
