Andre Green, you are correct. And, because of his hatred for the auto-tune machine, he and the producers were arguing about it being used, because of his flu. But, he gave in, just to silence the producers, or the manager, I am thinking that it might have been the manager, come to think about it. But, since he was trained as a Jewish Cantor Boy, as he was growing up and attending the church that his grandmother would take him along with her. He was not happy about the machine, so he sang it, while he was sick and they said that the machine kicked on for a split second, that whole time. And, here is a tidbit of more information about the song. As they were in the studio, preparing to record it, as they tried different variations of it, to get the right feel from it, that they were looking for. David Draimen just started singing it like this, as he was just tinkering around with the different styles of sound he was able to produce. After he finished and walked out of the sound room, he looked at the rest of the guy's, and they all were ghost white in the face, as if they just saw a ghost. And, the producer muttered out, the best he could, as his jaw was laying on the floor, THAT is exactly what they needed to do! And later, the original song writer, Paul Simon(From Simon & Garfunkel) , caught wind of what they were doing, from about 3 room's away, as he was there, to do something, as well(I forget if he was doing a new album, or something like that), but, he decided to pay them a visit, from a few buildings away, so he walked over to their sound room and listened to their version. And, he loved it so much as he said that they put it into perspective, that he himself tried to do, back in the 60's, but he just didn't know how to get it right. So, he let them know, that they had his own blessing to do it and he loved it! I watched the video of Paul Simon talking about it, either with, or in separate parts of the video, about how they came up with wanting to do the cover of the song. Granted, it was a little while ago. So, I don't remember what all happened. But, I do remember, that Paul Simon was either in the next studio over, or a few studio's away from the studio, that Disturbed was at...

Mildly obsessed with watching peoples reactions to this song, and this is by far the best one. The attention to detail, "introduction of guitar", "piano bass notes", "I saw the strings go". Love that she reacts to the music as well as his voice. Most reactions I've seen focus solely on the amazing vocals and miss these details of the musical instruments. Pause breaks to discuss what she is hearing are concise and effective. Many other reactions have too long pauses which ruins the pace of the song. And the way she is almost out of breath by the end, like she is emotionally exhausted by the song. She gets it! Not to mention the eye candy ;)

David's respect for Paul Simon's vision and message was the catalyst for the anger and rage that David brought to this cover. Paul Simon wrote a song of hope and he sang it with hope over 50 years ago. We didn't listen...our parents and grandparents didn't listen and David brought power and an almost righteous anger because we STILL haven't listened. This cover was so on point that Paul Simon himself said the song now belongs to Disturbed. I love your reactions. They are not only brilliant but each one is better than the last. You get the subtle (and not so subtle lol) emotion that metal sometimes hides. Your breakdown of the music and emotion was spot on.The only thing that's missing in this reaction was the message. But to be fair I've listened to this song countless times and I still find new layers to it 😘

Simon didnt say the song belongs to David. People keep saying that, but its not what he said. He said he highly approves of Davids version. Specifically, he said it was "extremely powerful" and that it reintroduced the song to newer generations.

The original is not a song of hope, it is a song of despair. David's version, like so much of his work, is a song of rage. It is powerful and impressive, but it doesn't work as well for me. Both versions are great. When I think of transformational covers, I think of songs where the original songwriter has to hear it and think, the cover is better. I think Johnny Cash doing NIN's 'Hurt' is close. I think Gary Jules doing Tears For Fears 'Mad World' is the gold standard.
@kevcarlisle1906
@kevcarlisle1906 2 жыл бұрын
@@jazzmojo It’s asking if sadness and despair yess but the original version didn’t have so much emotion and for the average person listening they’d not feel it as well as how Disturbed did it. With emotion you can almost it’s like the same lyrics but a different song that’s more relatable that you can feel the despair and hopeless feelings of the singer.

David Draiman was trained as a traditional Jewish cantor before he made the decision to move into the metal scene and actually chose the name Disturbed for this band. I have heard professional vocal coaches give their opinion that his ability to switch between his soft (angelic?) voice and the heavy vocal fry he uses, at will, marks his level of vocal control.

We saw disturbed perform this when we saw them support Avenged Sevenfold in 2016. We just cuddled and smiled. At her funeral I did both. I played it for her as I sang. Was so difficult to play it as I had tears streaming down my face and to this day this song always makes me tear up. David Draiman brings so much raw power to this song. It's just so beautiful.

Just like Hurt, which originally is from Nine Inch Nails got covered by Johnny Cash, and even Trent itself said "that is not my song anymore, it's Cash's.", the same can be said about Simon & Garfunkel "The Sound of Silence" being "covered" by Disturbed. It is not Simon & Garfunekl's song anymore. It is Disturbed's. David pours heart and soul out in order to sing this song. And the rest of the band together with the orchestra accompanied him in order to add that little bit of "magic" and depthness to a song that if simply played by David itself would be ALREADY a touch of genius (thank you, Simon and Garfunkel, your lyrics are amazing!). And yet, (and this is common among Disturbed's songs) David decided to pour the rawest emotions to this song he could, up to the point of sounding as "the prophet" in the song's lyrics, becoming the "guide" of the neon light god that the people followed. Once again, you are spot on, Senpai! :D

„The Sound of Silence“, written in 1963/1964 by Paul Simon and first sang by Simon & Garfunkel welcomed its first endorsed cover by Disturbed (David Draiman) 50 years after its debut. Now, 57 years later and still only, maybe, 1% of those who know the song really understand it. 57 years later and there are still no better words to describe the decay of society and humanity. If you're one of those who do not understand it, find someone to translate it for you because you're missing out on something special.

Paul Simon made a trip to see David because he wanted to say this to him: "This is your song now."

Link to verify that? Because I looked. All I could find is David sharing an email from Paul and what you stated, isn't in the email. Or did you just hear/read it on a forum?

That is not true. However it did happen with Trent Reznor and Johnny Cash. (well, not exactly this, but he gave up all rights on Hurt in favor of Johnny Cash as far as I know)

KZbin comment section says that. Theres an interview where Draiman speaks on Simon's reaction. He never said it was *his* song now. He *did* highly approve of it to the point of sharing it on his personal social media accounts, which is unheard of from Simon.

It occurred to me, I just watched a vid concerning the subject of, "what is a MAN?" In some ways this performance exemplifies or possibly answers the question. Sometimes knowing when to take charge and be powerful (even if you can't) and understanding when to be gentle and soft. These shoes have walked many miles and I believe timing and situation are key. You can't teach this; you can guide, but not teach.

The Official video is amazing...... depicts the separation of the Musicians...and the Song writers on different shores.....which creates the "sound of silence"..and the musicians build a boat at the end...to join the song writers..so they make "BREAK" the sound of silence.

There are good covers, there are great covers, and then there is this. Disturbed took an all-time classic and made it their own. No person or band should ever try and cover this song again.

Aileen, watching your beautiful facial expressions, and verbalization of what you're feeing during this song, perfectly convey the emotional gut-punch I feel every time I hear this version. I rarely, rarely like remakes, but this one, and Johnny Cash's rendition of Hurt, stand head and shoulders above others.

I remember as a kid the live telecast of Simon and Garfunkel at Central Park. Arts voice was like an angel singing this song but Disturbed knocked it out of the park with power and changing the melody slightly so it sounds a little like the Exorcist theme. It matches their music video to a tee.

Great reaction! Love at the start when you said your last reaction left you speechless, I was thinking, just wait to you hear this one. When he belts out.." But my words...like silent teardrops fell..." If that doesn't give you chills, you're dead! Just an incredible voice. One of the best live performances in music history, in my opinion. Thanks again for a great reaction. Peace....

It does give you chills. I still get them. It’s amazing how a song can affect you - mentally, emotionally, physically, even bringing you to tears. I didn’t really care much for S&G back in the day, I was more Stones, Doors, Zeppelin, but this version has me totally blown away!

You should really have reacted to the studio version. David had the flu during this performance, and, expressly against his wishes, the show's director put auto-tune on his voice. He was understandably pissed about it.

You gotta keep in mind that he is a rock artist, so that raspiness is all he does, which is why it sounds so good😂 and this might be an unpopular opinion, but why is it that most rock artists have the greatest voices. Such as Freddy Mercury or David Draimen who is the lead singer for disturbed.
