MY FATHER had gotten me into Eric Clapton when I was young & once I got sober I found out Eric Clapton has been sober for years and many of his friends have passed from ODs. I'm lucky to be alive. Don't apologize for feeling. I used to sing that song to my son when he was little to put him to sleep. It was a nighttime ritual because he liked it and i guess the tune soothed him. I would cry because of the story behind it, but it made him happy. In 2021 my (now all grown up) son collapsed in my kitchen and was rushed to the hospital. He was diagnosed with leukemia. He survived and just this month celebrated 2 years in remission. However, most of 2021, through the chemo and hospital and oncology... the terror that i might lose him kept me at his hospital bedside as often as they would let me. (even through my own agoraphobia and covid restrictions (they bent the rules for us) and my own physical disability because EVERYTHING becomes inconsequential when your child is in danger, no matter how old. He was 26). I couldn't breathe, he was in a fog for the first two months while living in the hospital oncology ward fighting for remission. They said if, when he'd gotten up off the floor, he'd decided to go back to bed instead of the ER, I'd have lost him. The gut punch and terror i felt... it was like all the air was sucked from the room and I'd been sucker punched all at once. I wouldn't have survived losing him. Those who have lost a child and gone on...i am amazed at the strength. I don't think I'm that strong and i never want to find out. I know that i would have followed him very soon after. So this song has extra meaning and i cry so hard now. Harder than i ever cried over a song.

As a guy who went through the same kind of situation that Eric went through, I can't listen to this song without at least my eyes watering up. I am a black metal big guy, who never shed a tear for many things, who most things from life is just "meh, that happens, life is what it is", but this song... This song gets me. Now, with a second 3 year old son, this music gets me even more, because I shed a tear for Eric's son, my first son and now my second son, for the joy of having him near me. Been a decade or more since I last listened to this song. And its power over me never diminished, not even one degree. Eric, I will raise my drinking horn to you tonight. And shed once again a tear for your boy, and my boys over my mead. It will taste a bit sour, but will be the best mead I've ever had. May the Gods keep you, your boy and my boys in their arms!

I could only imagine the pain this causes you, just reading your words was a punch to the gut for me and the heart, I'm truly sorry for your loss and the pain you live with. Music is one of those things that can unite us, heal us, and bring us comfort, even just for a couple minutes. We all know it can lift people up in the darkest of times and save lives. I think we might be cut from the same cloth, your words stating that you as a man never shed a tear for many things in your life also hit me, it's what's taught to us all from a young age, at home, playing sports, school, society in general. We're taught to push that down, you need to be strong for those we love, because that's what men do. I agree we need strong men, also crying in front of any of the women we love is a big no from all men. I'm not sure it's healthy to push that down, but it's definitely what's taught to all of us. I just had this talk with women in my family, they didn't understand. I found a song out by Dax called To Be A Man, came out 4 months ago, and a remix that's 2 months old, I showed it to them and tried to explain to them that it's true, wow did that hit home, I thought I broke them as they all cried and hugged me, I told them we do cry, you'll just never see it. I'd love for you to give it a listen. To Be A Man g.co/kgs/azcsBD Also may your horn of mead be a little sweeter today, for I know it'll be sweet when your sons of age. I will say a prayer for you and yours, keep at it sir.

Dear Aileen, I am so pleased you listened to Tears in Heaven. You really nailed it. You explained how it made you feel inside. This song was not supposed to come out, then Eric decided to let it out on a very limited edition. Now this song came out for everyone. It became one of the most iconic song ever. I lost my girl friend to cancer. In the last days we have listened to this song and it made me highly emotional. Up to the point that i told her that i would move Heaven up side down so i can be with her again. Once my girl friend crossed over the rainbow, she came back to me and told me that i wouldn't have to move Heaven up side down to find her as she mentioned that she was by my side, waiting for me. Special thanks for posting this.

Losing a child has to be one of the most painful experiences we can feel as human beings. My heart goes out to Mr. Clapton and every other parent whose life has been impacted with such a tragedy. It has been truly inspiring to me that after suffering the loss of his son, Mr. Clapton was able to direct his pain and grief into giving the world this song. I am blessed that all of my children are grown up now, alive and well. I know that if I had ever lost one, I would have withdrawn from the world and spiraled down into my grief and despair. I'm saddened by his loss, but am also happy that he had his art in which to channel his pain. I hope it helped comfort him.

I am sorry for your journey. My brother was killed in a car accident he was 20, the age of the chuld doesn't matter, My mom still can't look at his pictures, but what happened is my father turned to his 4 kids and had to be closer, mom was already invested in all us kids. When pops passed 4 years ago at 85, he had dementia but even in his dementia the only thing he would ask us is if we were alright. His kids were his world, I went down a dark path but now am 21 years sober and mom's 90 and us kids call her everyday and I see her at least once a week. She is still in good shape and drives so she is a tough old farm girl. I am her comic relief daily. I just have a strange outlook on life I guess I am normally abnormal. My brothers death was like a knife to our family, but it did teach us to hold on closer to each other. Love doesn't have to be the mushy stuff it just means you are there for each other. My lesson was, you can hold on to the anger ot you can let it go and accept the help of those reaching out to you. There will be a change because one of those 2 things will not allow the other to happen.

A beautiful song dedicated to his son Conor. Conor was playing hide and seek with the live-in Nanny in a high rise in New York. She followed him into the room. Aileen, It is your empathy and ability to connect with a song that brings people back time and time again. You don't need to apologize, everyone here is in one of two camps, either they're feeling it right along with you, or the wish they could feel anything at all.

I’m younger then Eric Clapton’s original audience but still grew up as a big fan, in fact he is one of my all time favorites. I remember when the news of this tragedy broke and the music world and us fans really felt for him. I still till this day have never heard a more heartfelt and poetic song about the ultimate loss as this one. RIP Connor

I just lost a family member a few hours ago. It's nice listen to this and release some of the emotions I'm feeling, especially being that this family member of mine, lost a young son not that long ago. "I must be strong and carry on". Clapton's music is brilliant. If you're going to dig in, might I suggest either starting with listening to his music with either the Yardbirds or Derek and the Dominoes or perhaps Cream. Maybe "Sunshine of Your Love" as an example. Then you can dig into songs like Cocaine.

I'm a 61 year old,.big man, and I can't hear this song without tearing up. Your reaction demonstrates that you're a compassionate human being. ❤ Hard to say where to start in his impressive catalog. He was in a few great bands in addition to his solo career. A good place to start is Layla by Derek and the Dominoes (Clapton sings and plays guitar along with Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers on slide guitar). Also from Derek and the Dominoes: "Bell Bottom Blues." Clapton also played guitar in the supergroup Cream (lead vocals were sung by bassist Jack Bruce). Some must-hear Cream songs include "White Room" and "Sunshine of Your Love." Solo career has spanned quite a few decades with many reaction-worthy songs. Love your channel. You're beautiful inside and out.

There is a long forgotten beautifully sad song by Led Zeppelin called All Of My Love, which was written by Robert Plant who was still mourning the untimely sudden death of his 5y old son Karac. For me and many music fans, this song and Tears In Heaven share that common theme. All of My Love is on the In album titled Through The Out Door. You may want to consider reacting to this heart-felt song as well. It always brings a tear to my eyes and is also one of the most beautiful touching tributes from a father to his son. Thank you for reacting to Tears In Heaven and I hope you consider giving All of My Love a reaction as well.

What a beautiful heartfelt reaction, Aileen. ❤ I'm a 71-year-old American, who had the good fortune to spend my last three years of high school in London (1966-69). The Beatles were still rocking the world with each new album, The Who were playing local clubs as where the Stones. And Eric Clapton was a part of all of it, first performing with The Yardbirds and then with Cream. He was considered the greatest guitarist amongst all of those other greats. I would suggest "Layla," for a glimpse of his soaring guitar work and brilliant songwriting. It's a true story how about Eric trying to give support to Beatle George Harrison's wife, Patty Boyd who was devastated by her husband's cheating. But Eric fell madly in love with her and it was unrequited at first. He brought her to his home for her to first hear it in recorded form. He dubs her, "Layla." They later married.

It's the sign of a great artist when he can touch listeners souls in this way. I can never hear this song without getting emotional. I sing and play acoustic guitar, I love this song but I would never try to play it in public, as I don't believe I could get through it without breaking up and embarrassing myself. How Eric manages to do it is unbelievable.

Being an Eric Clapton fan from 1972 and seeing him in concert 4 times and then knowing this happened and how he endured and handled this is amazing. A true "Greatest of All Time" artist. The only 3 time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And for him to be able to pour his heart out like this is on another different level of humanity. We can all learn lessons from this man. Thanks.

I’m so sorry to read all the comments below from people who have lost children. It’s a tragedy I will never know personally as I’m 61 and have never been a parent. My heart goes out to you all as it does to Eric. He has had more than his fair share of heartbreak in his life but despite that he continues to bring happiness to millions through his music. He also raises untold thousands for charity. Despite all the money, fame and Ferraris he is a very modest guy and I, having lived near him in the Surrey countryside in my teens, have met people who were close to him who have personally seen and been recipients of his kindness. He even autographed some albums for me!

I saw him perform this live at an evening show at the (then) Great Woods in Mansfield, Massachusetts, not long after this song was released. It was an outdoor show, and when he started playing this song, the entire place went absolutely silent. You could have heard a whisper from a hundred yards away, and so many people held up their lighters that the arena was lit up like it was the middle of the day. It remains the most powerful, touching, and respectful moment I have ever experienced.

This is one of my favorite songs, in part because of Clapton really pouring his heart out about surely one of the worst things that could happen to a person, that he actually endured. And partly because I learned to play this song on guitar when I was maybe 18 or 20 (which was a big deal to me, because I almost exclusively played bass). It's the only time I remember my dad actually listening to me play something, and truly complimenting me for something like that. He's been gone a couple years now, and that is still one of my fondest memories. Great video, much love, friend. EDIT: I've heard/played this song for much of my life. It has always hit hard, but I've never had tears in my eyes listening to it until seeing you react. Weirdly, I appreciate it.

it's been along time since i have heard this, but i remember hearing the lyrics and thinking he was saying that the sense of loss and depression was deep enough that he would want to "join" his son, but that ultimately, he realized it was not his time, that the time would come and he didn't belong there yet. there is still hope in such a sad song as well, having the faith that pain no longer exists in heaven. one of the most powerful and beautiful songs.

I never get through this song with dry cheeks myself. As a parent, I feel my primary responsibility is to protect my children. The line; "I know, I don't belong, here in heaven." crushes me every time, it speaks to the incredible amount of survivor's guilt felt by a parent that has lost a child. 🥲

My father was a singer and musician, and he passed away when I was two. No memories of him and sadly no recordings of his singing. Just a few photos. This song always crushed me. I’m not a religious person, but the heart felt lyrics are such a gut punch. Would he recognize me? Would I, him? I’m older now than he ever got to be, with a young son of my own. I’m living that life for us both. Being the dad I never got, and making memories I never had.

Don't apologize, Aileen, we all cried along with you. 😪 The funny thing about blues is that it can break your heart or make you get up and dance! I add my suggestion that you try Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight", the live version is magnificent!!! Footnote....I lost my son just before his 1st birthday due to his mother's alcoholism causing an accident. I tried to support my wife through that nightmare, but she walked out on me as well. Took a long time before I could be around people after that. I owe my guitar and Paul Simon's Guitar Study Center (actually his brother's school) for helping me learn to live again after that. ❤😇
