Okay, the blanket thing. I think that every person has the basic human right to BASELINE comfort. Does every human *have* baseline comfort? No. But should they? I believe so. Yes, even criminals, because I can recognize that they are still human beings even if they’ve broken laws. Obviously I don’t think we should treat prisoners like nobility, prison should absolutely still be somewhere you don’t want to go, but denying them food, water, time outside, or yes, blankets when they’re cold, is immoral. They are still people. They are still human. They deserve to be warm. EVEN if you disagree with me, though, spending $20,000 of taxpayer money instead of giving this man a $20 blanket is fucking ridiculous and a waste of everyone’s time. I feel exactly the same on this subject. And just to add: a disturbing amount of people end up in prison for either very little, or nothing at all (mistaken identity, identity theft, can't tell you how many _proven_ nightmare _'cops planted drugs'_ or _'cops wanted to close a high profile case so they fabricated evidence/abused a false confession out of someone'_ stories I've seen), because our system is broken. Even a law abiding person can't assume they'll never end up there, so even if one can't empathize they should want there to be a humane baseline.

Former prison guard/sgt.....Almost everyone I worked with felt the same way....all prisoners and inmates deserve basic respect and dignity. I have had to block an very angry inmate who was about to rain heck all over a bad guard.....but I had no issues. Why? A simple question - Have I ever disrespected you? Please calm down and let's go talk. I passed the word to the next shift making sure they knew the inmate was in the right and complained about the guard to the Captain. I walked without hesitation in the dark among murderers....because I was a fair but firm person and gave respect and earned it. No one tried to play me (except once - lol. Convict secretary came running up after I was done with letting them know I do not play that, because he knew someone needed a Write Up. Heck, he went and did it and just passed it to me to read and sign.). I and my fellow guards knew we were safe and were usually referred to as "THIER Officers". One r*&pist was warned not to mess with their officers if he wanted to leave. Inmate has an allergy, we wrote it up, passed it to superiors and they took care of it. Clinic refusing to see a convict who was clearly in distress, Captain ordered we load her, transport her, advise her to sue if they ignore her when we get there....Spoiler Alert - they were forced to do their job. The issue is....modern prisons are For Profit, Corporate owned places.

Gonna need to correct you on the space thing at 13:02. The temperature value commonly cited for space is the temperature of the Cosmic Microwave Background (leftover radiation from the deionization of matter soon after the big bang). That is to say, an object that does not produce it's own internal heat left in the void and far from any stars or external heat will radiate it's internal heat away (very slowly mind you) until the radiation it releases matches the very low amount it receives from the CMB, which is 2.7K. At the Earth's orbit however, the object will quickly overheat due to sunlight striking it, due to the previously mentioned ineffectiveness of radiation in releasing internal heat.

The chirp of a smoke detector on low battery is irritating enough that if I couldn't change it I would grind away my damn teeth. I can't even escape it with my ear buds. Active noise canceling is no help. Hell, I can't even evade the noise in my sleep because it keeps me awake and it would invade my dreams otherwise. The whole point is that they are annoying so that you change the battery because it could mean life or death if you don't. If I ever live in an apartment and someone leaves their smoke detector beeping I will pound on their door armed with a ladder and a case of batteries and tell them that they WILL change the battery and pay me for the battery they need. It won't be any low grade battery either, we're talking top of the line Energizer Ultimate Lithium (around $15 per unit) so as to ensure that everyone benefits from a long period of silence and the culprit has to shell out that much more. People who let things like that go for so long that I involve myself do not deserve a choice.
