The movie this song was written for delves quite heavily into sexuality, violence, delusions, perversions, mental illness, trauma and lies, all shrouded by a pretty facade of innocence and childlike wonder. It deals with a girl falling into despair, embracing the darkest, most twisted parts of her heart, and choosing to smile as her pure white life becomes more and more stained. Great fit!

As a syllabic language with no alphabet, Japanese is great for singing, because you can very easily partition words in any way that suits the melody, without making things sound weird, out of place or extending sounds. This gives you a ton of freedom, I think. Grammatically the songs are usually a total mess that's really hard to translate properly, but it sounds amazing.

One thing about Japanese is that it has what they call mora timing. In English, we use stress timing, where the length of a syllable depends on its stress within a word. Japanese on the other hand treats each mora (almost, but not quite a syllable) as having the same length. This leads to a tendency for each mora of a word to be sung for the same length of time in songs where the lyrics and melody are written first. Additionally, Japanese syllable structure is usually either consonant vowel, consonant glide vowel, or the moraic n (which is an allophone of m in Japanese). Glides are palatalized versions of each base mora. For example, Ka か may become Kya きゃ (written Ki + a small version of Ya や) this would also count as one mora. In addition to that, they have long vowels where the vowel is pronounced for 2 mora, as well as geminate consonants. Geminate consonants insert a pause (not really a glottal stop) before pronouncing the consonant. For example, akko would be written あっこ (the small tsu つ representing the geminate consonant) and would last 3 mora. Pronunciation wise it would sound a bit like how you might say ak-ko, at the end of the a there's a closing off like the beginning of the k sound, but a small pause before opening again to finish the plosive.

14:13 the song and it's lyrics, follow the story of a the protagonist of this series' struggle to feel love, after she's been abused her entire life and thus been made to forget what love feels like. The madness setting in describes the conflict in her heart. I suppose the bridge describes, her longing for beauty in this world, and finally, (into the reprise) how that can never be, and thus a painful refrain of frustration to end with. ✨

The composer for this song, Yuki Kajiura is on the soundtrack for several anime, including a trilogy of movies in which Aimer sings the songs in the endings. I love how these two eventually make another song together outside of anime It’s called “Wonderland” and it oozes the kind of feel here check it out sometime

As for the similarity with Fench, I could agree, but only concerning sung Japanese. Beacause for the little I heard of IRL Japanese speaking, it's so different from my natal French.

I just found your channel, and your interpretation on the song without understand the language is fundamentally correct. I recommend you check out the main anime that this song based from (Fate/Stay Night Heaven's Feel). The OST and this song was composed by Yuki Kajiura as well, so some vibes are there.

Great song from a great movie. HF part 2 is genuinely fucked up. I love it to death, but it’s a bit hard to get through. Granted it is nowhere near as fucked up as some of Nasu’s other work.
