Mate this is so cool and inspirational (in fact all your channel is). Looks like SA is the place to be for hunters today! I'm thinking more and more of using blowgun and your vid is really helpful (most of the other YT blowgunners can't explain and just talk about instinct as one comment suggests). just one thing i didn't put in there one eye may be a lot stronger than the other... thus it may throw your triangle off... but once you know your shooting triangle it doesn't change

It's my understanding that the cold steel darts are specifically designed so that the orange cap does come off. It allows the steel to continue penetrating into the animal mainly for larger game.

Yes that is why they make a cap that falls off... I get around this problem by giving it more shaft... That way the hole doesn't close and the dart cases more damage when and if the animal does move... Case and point the red Rock Rabbit hunt I went on I got a total of 4. All darts were recovered from the animals. Another advantage of having a dart that doesn't come apart is that when shooting small game like rats it isn't a wasted shaft

@@huntingforhearts As I said. I believe it's designed to do that for larger game. No need for the cap to come loose on small game as the dart itself is probably long enough to reach the smaller animals vital organs.

@@davidcopple8071 David, here is something to think about, how many animals vitals are deeper than 30cm? that is, of course broadside. What depth does your shaft go when you hit some meat? For me, If it is straight meat +-40cm, add the elastic skin and we have 30cm penatraton... I can't get more than that, I have tried. Cold steel on their packaging said that the blowgun was made for smaller game (note that this was 7 years ago when I bought mine) They suggested up to a rabbit and no larger. Of course things have changed and we shoot larger and larger targets but the fact still stands when designing the "mini" broadhead they only made it 10cm. The cap on smaller birds cases more problems than it is worth... I have close to 60 caps with no shafts. I would say that 10% of shots I was disappointed in cold steel. If it were a rifle I wold have dumped it... that is part of the reason I make my own. But like I said stick to your favorites and I'll do the same. This conversation can go around in circles for days

@@huntingforhearts . I was more picking your brain than arguing with you. I don't have any favorites. I've dabbled with the cheaper blowguns in the past but never used anything like the cold steel. I was merely mentioning the purpose of the detachable cones because in your video you mentioned it like it was some kind of defect with their darts. I simply wanted clarification.

I know it's a bit late. I only came across this video now. I am also is SA but cannotfind .625 or 5/8 inch pipe stock. All is metric. 15 mm is readily available but and it is 0.59 inch so I have to trim all the cold steel darts to fit. A bit of a problem if one trimjust too much. Is there a specific type of pipe that is exactly .625 in SA?

Is mouth piece important for power ? I made one 5/8 electrical conduit pipe & made a small mouth piece with duct tape. Works just wondering am I looking power

But wouldn't you want to practice with the same darts you hunt with? I don't practice archery with different arrows than what I'm gonna hunt with. Shouldn't it be the same with a blow gun?

Well that would depend on alot of factors... I think for the average person it would be around 2 to 3 for me it is at 1,5m (I hunt with a bent pipe on purpose)

I just checked and the type of license for venom they have here in Florida I need 1000 hours experience with snakes or any other poison animal type and that won be possible for me
