The remarkable thing about this video is the startling freshness and absurd humor of the music. Waller's was an absolutely brilliant musical perception.

Thank you for presenting Thomas "Fats" Waller at the piano, playing his signature tune, Ain't Misbehaving, from 1929. A classic if there ever was one.

Ever fresh, never slavishly referential. A performance by the artist of his work, tossed almost carelessly to posterity, but lucky for us, caught in the act. This is how we come to have ghosts, laughing at us, to chase.

It's one of the very few recordings in which the verse is played.

This record has a very bright, full sound being an electrical recording. The Victrola reproduces the sound very well and may have been designed with electricals in mind.
@MichaelFearnleyBass9 жыл бұрын
These were designed specifically to reproduce the then new electrical recordings with the full bass and treble with a relatively flat frequency. They practically made every machine made before obsolete when they came out.
@dhelton40 Жыл бұрын
This machine was ment to be played with the lid closed. The hissy surface noise is greatly reduced in all acoustic machines, when the lid is closed. I know people like to watch the disc turn, these videos can be greatly improved by using a seperate microphone in front of the horn openning, which will reduce the noise. This comment was ment to be constructive and not critical.

to bruce VV: they CHANGED EVERY NEEDLE per disc played???? I believe you however I am nearly shocked to hear such a level of $$. As it was, a victrola wasn't even OWNED in every home at that point; almost a furniture purchase/ full wood etc. However I'm thinking too this was still a good 4 yrs prior to the Wall Street financial market crash or perhaps even longer depending on whether it was purchased early in 25 and the Wall Street market crash was basically nearer to first week of November.....wow

The Orthophonic victrola is from late 1925, the Victor Orthophonic Record by Waller is from 1929. The First Victrola was produced by E.R. Johnson's Victor Talking Machine Co. beginning in 1906 and by the the mid 1920;s there were Vitrola's available to fit just about every financial situation complete with Time payments. Suitcase Victrola's, table top Victrola's, upright Victrolas, Console Victrola and even expensive Art Model Victrolas.

Steel needles have a round point that gets sharp wilst playing because of the pressure. If you re-use it will damage the grooves. Have a look at the bottom of this page, it is an extract from a period magazine that will explain better than I can how wear can happen. www.hmv-gramophones.eu/technical/needle/ . I guess that if you had money enough to buy a gramophones, needles were a fairly cheap investment in comparison. And if you didn't buy any new it would have been even more expensive to buy your records again because you ruined you first copies. This remained a routine until record players got lighter cartridges that didn't need their needle to be changed after every play.

The1920sDandy, we also must remember that steel needles came in packs of 100 for literally just cents (after inflation, that's less than about $2/pack.) Of course, nowadays packs of 100 needles are usually a minimum of $4, but that's also because they're specialty products now - they weren't a century ago.
