After 3 days of raw aviation megafun with Buffalo Airways at Yellowknife, NWT. I am “back to the future” and flew out on Air Canada CRJ900 to Calgary. The CRJ even has a Business Class product. An impressive hot meal was served on the 2 hour flight.
I stayed overnight in Calgary and flew on Air Canada B787-9 Dreamliner to Montreal the next day. The Air Canada lounge in Calgary has decent food selection. I met with two other Canadian travelers there, and they told me the airfare within Canada is sometimes higher than flights to Europe. My flight out of Calgary was delayed by an hour due to a late inbound flight.
Once onboard Air Canada B787, the crew showed me the cockpit and the pilot crew rest area on the B787. A course-by-course full lunch was served onboard with a printed menu and paired wines. The Air Canada B787-9 also features Premium Economy Class.
At the end of the 3.5 hour flight, I highlighted two observed issues with aviation in Canada.
1. The airfares are high. I was redeeming miles to fly for better value.
2. If you didn't get a refund but got a voucher instead, given the current high airfare and inflation, the voucher value is unlikely to hold.

Canadian Govt. Policies to blame . They refused to let Emirates to fly to Montreal , Vancouver and Calgary to protect ACs monopoly. More low cost airlines are needed in domestic Canada as well .

This is a part of the economic picture everyone likes to ignore. They see the real or sometimes imagined benefits of whatever regulation you're dealing with without realizing that it adds cost and complexity. Think about your medical bill, your local hospital has a whole department called compliance just to make sure they are up to date on various requirements.

@@SamChui That will never happen as long as there is monopoly of A/C. Sad and unfortunate but true. US is far better than Canada as there is so much of competition. Air Canada's baggage policy (specifically to India) is a complete rip off. Only 1check-in bag. I wonder despite all of this how they win the Best North American airline etc., This is a garbage airline that I avoid whenever I happen to fly outside of Canada. Yes, another fact correctly presented by Sascha Dupupet. Taxes and fees are another killer. Government only needs your money. Period.

@@SamChui no way that will happen unfortunately. Transport Canada basically acts as a bodyguard for Air Canada and ferociously protects it from international competition. This is why Canada does not issue more landing rights to the gulf big 3 for example. For example, if they were allowed, Emirates would surely have flights to Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. But with the limits imposed on Emirates by Transport Canada, they only fly to Toronto a few times a week.

The lack of serious competition is what, I believe, allows AC to charge these types of fares. WestJet has recently announced their intention to "re-focus" on the west. Recently, several ULCC's like Lynx, Swoop and Flair have begun operating, so we'll see how well they manage, and if that in any way causes AC to re-price their offerings. We desperately need more airline competition in Canada. Am in full agreement it should simply not cost this much to travel within one's own country. I can say for sure that Canadians are tired of being held hostage by this pseudo-monopoly.

@@wizardgaming669 exactly. The airports are good because they’re privatized. A few years ago WestJet launched Montreal to Boston flights. AC immediately slashed their prices on the one hour flight to around $240 round-trip. The Maple Leaf Lounge in Calgary is IMO the best lounge at least in Canada. I haven’t tried Vancouver post table service ordering but for at least the other major AC hubs, the food offerings leave a lot to be desired. In Toronto specifically, I’ve flown both domestic and international and I was surprised I was served the exact same food options in the international lounge as what was served in the domestic lounge on a consistent basis this year. I mean, for the price, you definitely hope the food choices can be switched up here and there? I do like Air Canada but for the fares, it does seem ridiculous what they charge. They try hard to be aspirational and upscale but it always just comes across middle of the road. I think the soft product and the pre-departure experience needs to be looked at further. Even with the Signature Suite, MLL has no excuse to feel like a Costco kitchen does it?

Canadian Airlines (CP Air) was just as bad. This was before Westjet service in eastern Canada. Air Transat was a charter carrier back then. Air Canada prices today are high simply due to lack of competition. They got rid of first class many years ago and offer economy, premium economy, and business class. Maybe I am used to seeing high prices for air fares with Air Canada. I'm from Toronto and I can agree to say that they are high. I think the #1 reason is because generally if you're comparing between US and Canada, we Canadians pay more for everything. I believe our oil from Alberta gets shipped to the US to get refined for fuel and then gets shipped back to Canada for sale. Go figure. Canadian businesses have a stupid way of doing things. We generally can't run our own companies without assistances from the US. Everything is either US owned or operated under them. Flying within Canada is a big deal unlike the US where taking a flight is as common as taking a local bus. I think the abundance of airlines in the US fighting for the same business allows them to under cut each other plus they have like 10x the population.
@marcusdamberger
@marcusdamberger 2 жыл бұрын
I think in some ways you hit the nail on the head, with a larger population there is way more competition on routes for those customers. Of course like others have said, higher taxes overall in Canada, and maybe fuel prices is another factor, and I suspect everyone from the baggage handlers to the ATC personnel at these airports get's paid at a higher wage than their U.S. counterparts, especially the lower end jobs like ramp crew, so that's probably offset in airport fees and taxes. But then you look at other countries in Europe that are similar or not much larger in population than Canada and their airfares are lower. So odd. I'm in the U.S., I've only ever flown through Canada on my way to Europe so I never paid domestic fares.

Air Canada B787 looks really stylish and modern with its “sunglasses”. I really enjoyed watching the review of this beautiful business class, it’s definitely one of the best business classes in the world. Thanks for this fabulous video Sam 👍

My son got bumped off a flight in business class because a pilot wanted his seat flying to Barcelona from Montreal, and today my son got delayed from Miami to Montreal causing him to miss connecting flight from Montreal to Toronto and is now rented a car to drive so he doesn’t miss work in the morning! I didn’t know that Air Canada was doing you a favour once you booked a business flight class to “try” to get you on a plane! I won’t be booking any more flights on air canada as a consumer I have choices and I will choose another carrier “any other carrier” in the future!

Lucky you Sam, you have access to maple leaf club. I just came back from my European trip a week ago, i can’t afford first/business class ticket so understandable that the service way different than my economy accommodation. The aircrafts service were my favorite, 777-300ER and 787-9, but the food in economy were the worst I ever had in all my travel experience, I flew several airlines in my Europe and Asian trip, I never had as bad food as Air Canada, and also I paid 27 dollars for WiFi for the entire flight and not even half way from 9hr flight from Heathrow to Vancouver the WiFi stop working, I ask help from the FA to check my phone and she did, then she returned my phone and said “oh this area of the flight normal won’t get signal”! 😳

I live in Canada and I can't agree more with the fact that the domestic air fair here is super expensive. To give you a good comparison, last month I purchased a $700 flight from Toronto to Singapore, while flying from Toronto to Vancouver is $600. Don't try to understand it, because it just doesn't make sense. I guess they don't want us to explore our own country...

Not sure where you get the idea there’s only one main airline. WestJet is the second full service national airline. Plus there’s a number of ULCC. You can fly from Calgary to Montreal for under $100 on a ULCC

Airline travel is expensive in Canada. Always has been. Airports, like everywhere are currently a real mess, but AC is usually on-time, and very safe. The staff are professional but no y'all,s here. But, once you get here, you'll find a beautiful, safe and friendly country with a world's worth of scenery and professional sports, entertainment and world-class dining. Also no wierdo's, or fights on the planes. So please come and stay.

Hey Sam, good to see you in Canada! Yes its expensive, but remember Canada is the second largest country in the world with a population of "only" 33 million. One tenth that of America, a smaller country with a much larger population.

My only 787 experience was on my only Air Canada trip to Seoul and back in 2020. Biggest complaint was the dimmable windows strictly controlled by the crew so I got to see no scenery over the North.

As a Canadian, I can definitely say that there is no way to travel inside the country without points and vouchers. Like Sam said in his videos we need more competition, thankfully we have Westjet which is becoming a more significant airline to give Air Canada competition and we also have new low-cost airlines that started operations this year. Let's hope these new airlines will push the airfare down for my fellow Canadians!

Lynx has been an absolute nightmare. I attempted to fly with them in July from Toronto to Edmonton. Flight was cancelled after a 3 hour delay (1am). we were bussed to a hotel while our flights were rebooked. I had one of the closest rebooking date, which wasn't for another 7 days. Ended up having to spend almost $800 on an AC flight for the next morning. It's been nothing but problems trying to get that cost covered by Lynx, as we were told they would.

This is why a lot of Canadians prefer to go on an all inclusive vacation in the Caribbeans because it is way cheaper than travelling inside Canada. Now with an $800 ticket from Toronto to Vancouver ,if you're lucky, you need to pay if you want to select your seats and you get half a can of soda pop for the 5 hours flight.

Effective August 26, 2022 Air Canada only allow 1 check in bag for free and charge CAN$ 100 for the 2nd check in bag for most international flights. While most airlines still allow free 2 check in bags.

I think most Canadians will agree that air fare here is expensive. I will say that for long haul flights the fares on AC can be lower is some cases. I’m flying to AKL next year and the fare on AC is almost 25% less than ANZ on the same days I’m flying. I also find AC better than flying any of the US airines

Looks like Air Canada is taking a very long time to update their inflight meal offerings. Based on the menu Sam had from YYC to YUL in August, it was the exact same one I had when I flew Air Canada Signature Class from YVR to YYZ back in June! For those who fly frequently, they must be bored of that smoked tuna appetizer by now.

I'm glad you made this video. Canada has insane airfare prices as the market only has two major competitors, Air Canada and WestJet. They both monopolize the market which is bad for Canadians. Also, our airports are still a mess due to government meddling and legacy COVID rules which most of the world has done away with. Canada is a joke compared to much of the world. We are not first rate at all when it comes to air travel.
