Went through AF basic training in 1976. You girls and guys have the benefit of modern communication to share what to expect in the experience. Back then, you just jumped in and learned to sink or swim. But, joining the AF will be the best decision you ever make. Take on the challenge with a gusto. AIM HIGH!!!

I wouldn't be much of an expert on the subject considering I didn't study! And from the way you describe it, I would say yes. Your hair has to be one color, not including "natural" highlights and what not.

Make sure when you go to MEPS you know if you wanna sign a 4-year or 6-year contract, I went in wanting a 4-year and was tricked into a 6-year. So just know exactly what you want! I always recommend 4 because you can always add more years, you can't take them away (without extreme circumstances). BUT GOOD LUCK!

You can bring any chapstick your heart desires :) No matter the color haha. I wouldn't bring anything that looks like lipstick, but I don't think there's anything saying it can't be tinted. The color of the tube can be whatever color, too. (I didn't know which you were referring to)

You can not wear earrings at all during BMT, to include for photos or graduation. I remember getting about 30 minutes to do makeup for photos, but you can not wear makeup for graduation

Keep up the videos!!! They are great. So about the things they give you,if you already bought some of the items. Do you have to take what they give you? This way we don’t get charge for something we won’t use. Also do you think a baby g-shock is flashy?? It’s black water resistant an really old. Plus it tells military time.

You receive every single item they give you, whether you brought it or not. I don't know if it's a uniformity thing or what, but I would save your money and just take what they give you. I found myself using 90% of the stuff even after BMT so it wasn't horrible. If it's solid black you'll be fine! One of the people in my flight had a G-shock watch that worked for her.

Thanks for all the videos! I ship out 5/29. I've been really worried about sunscreen. Can you bring it? Do you think I'll have time to apply it? I've heard some people say it wasn't allowed and others said they make you put it on. I'm worried because I get burnt so easily. I know you're mostly covered but I'm worried about my hands and face.

Omg how could I forget about sunscreen! YES you can bring it, I didn't even think to bring some and had to borrow this one girl's until we went to the store and I could buy some myself. You will definitely have time to apply it, so I recommend you bring it, ESPECIALLY if you burn easily. I'm sorry I left that out of the list! It's a really great idea to bring some.

I was in 83-89. Good advice. Bring what you would bring on a one day vacation. The clothes you're wearing and an extra. Travel sized personal items and not to much. EVERYTHING else will go into storage. Anything else you'll need to buy at the BX (Base Exchange). Phones, electronic devices, ANYTHING not military go into storage. You wear what THEY authorize and provide. Anything flashy? Leave it at HOME. You're entering a medieval world you WILL be a clone of the person on both sides and in front and back of you. Don't stand out.

Hey! I'm glad you're into the videos, cellphones are definitely allowed but they will be taken from you and stored in a locked box. You will be able to use your phone periodically to call your family, but you won't have it in your possession.

Braids are allowed, you can find the specifics if you look up AFI 36-2903 (make sure it's the most recent one from 2018). There's rules regarding size of braids and spacing between them all

Jewelry is not allowed during BMT! And in the actual operational field, you can only wear one pair of earrings in the lowest piercing of the lobe. You have to take everything else out in uniform.

For underwear and bras, it doesn't matter. They can be whatever you want. For socks, they end up giving you uniform ones, but for the first few days when you're wearing your own clothes, bring socks with small logos. The Nike check, Under Armour logo, etc are okay.

Thanks! And that's great, to graduation you can wear your uniform lol. You don't wear civilian clothes at all in your time during BMT other than the first few days of arriving (when you don't have uniforms yet) and the last day when you fly to tech school. You wear OCPs to the coin ceremony and blues to the actual graduation parade. It was ABUs when I went through but I believe the new people going through are getting OCPs.

You will not be able to dye your hair in BMT, and you definitely won't have time to do it...Some girls in my flight were able to go to the base salon to get their hair done but that was because their hair was out of regs to begin with.

I have a tattoo on my wrist and it’s fine! you just can’t have tattoos on your hands, face, or neck. Basically anywhere that would be seen while in uniform. Hope this helps!

During BMT you're issued a weapon that looks and feels like an M16 rifle, which you learn to assemble and disassemble all throughout your training. You carry it around a lot, and use it while you're doing entry-controller duty (guarding the dorm door at night). During BEAST week you're also carrying it around very often, but only during one day do you actually shoot the real thing. You shouldn't really deal with guns as a photojournalist aside from BMT, and then if you need to attend training again before deploying. You have to remember your commitment to the military might put you in situations you're otherwise uncomfortable with, like handling a weapon, and if you're not ready for that then I don't think joining would necessarily be the best thing. You know yourself the best though, so it's up to you! As for the planes, I know some friends who have gone on a few flight assignments, but I've yet to do so. It all depends on where you go and what kind of assignment you have.

I'm not sure...whatever works for your skin type, really. I use Dove bar soap for sensitive skin but I know it's kindof inconvenient to have a bar. And I guess you don't HAVE to wear them, but you're gonna be wearing eye glasses straps so they won't go anywhere.

You can not have a blow dryer to use during BMT, but you can bring feminine hygiene products of your choice and tweezers/nail clippers/razors.

That's a great question! Basically they make you mark all of your clothes with the initial of your last name plus the last four of your social security number, which allows everyone to sort out the laundry correctly. The laundry is washed together, and everyone teams up to distribute it based on that label combo, which you write on the bottom of your flip-flops (they issue these) and hang on your bed so people can match the clothes to the flip-flop. I hope that makes sense haha, usually undergarments are pretty unique but if you have some really generic stuff you can just write your label on it!

Ebony Nope unless I am mistaken, you can not join if you rely on the assistance of an emotional support animal.

Ebony Nope if you decide to get an animal once you move out of the dorms, that’s fine, but to actually be diagnosed with a disability to require an emotional support animal...you won’t be able to be in the Air Force at all I don’t believe.

If you bring travel size shampoos and conditioner how Are you supposed to refill it without bringing full-size bottles

QuęęN Hoez Lame you bring multiple, but in all honesty, you can bring full size but you’ll need to have your luggage be luggage and not a carry on bag on the air plane. Also it’s not really recommended you bring shampoo and conditioner, they give you a 2in 1 shampoo and conditioner and a body wash. You don’t really have time to condition. You get like a 1.5 min shower. But to keep your hair healthier I do recommend bringing like a hair oil, it also helps with fly always on buns

The gas chamber is definitely stressful, but if you remind yourself it's all over in less than 4 minutes, it's not horrible! You're in discomfort for a short amount of time and then it's done.
