Every airport I have ever landed at had an aircraft on the ground. You walk over to one of those and use its radio. They all work on the ground just the same as in the air. Sure. Not as far, but in a crisis you talk to one and then that airborne plane talks to others. I’ve been in several message relays before. Simple. Hi Kelsey, I’m an aviation firefighter. Love your videos and was especially excited to find out you had done die hard 2. was really hoping that you was going to mention the fuel igniting? As you know JET A1 is technically diesel and has a very high ignition temperature. It’s flashpoint is 37c, (so it needs to be warm). Also its flame speed is slow. It will travel along the ground at 30 metres a minute. As far as I know your 747 doesn’t run on AVGAS but if that had been the case this would be quite believable. Yippee Kai a motherf**er. Great video thanks so much.

@@GERfusion thank you for the clarification. I incorrectly assumed they were the same thing. I found this "The key difference between flash point and auto ignition temperature is that flash point determines the lowest temperature at which vapour of a material starts ignition in the presence of an ignition source whereas auto ignition temperature is the lowest temperature at which a material can start ignition spontaneously. Moreover, another significant difference between flash point and auto ignition temperature is that flash point requires external ignition sources while auto ignition temperature does not require external ignition sources. Also, pressure has no effect on flash point whereas increment of pressure decreases the atuo ignition temperature. "

@jimstanley_494 жыл бұрын
I always assumed they meant giving a false altimeter setting when they lowered the glideslope. I mean, the glideslope is set by the physical arrangement of the antennas next to the runway, you can't just turn a knob and change it. But an ILS only gives you 1.5 degrees of information. It lines you up with the runway and sets your _rate of descent_ , but you can't just follow it until you hit the ground; you need to know your altitude too. If they set their altimeter 200ft low (they're adjustable in about 10ft increments) and don't have a radar altimeter, and the visibility is that bad, they might be too low to reject the landing when they "reach" the decision height and can't see the runway. I think the scriptwriter must have decided there were too many technical dots to connect and simplified it to "lower the glideslope." It certainly makes for an intuitive graphic on that spiffy, light pen-enabled computer screen. (Followed by several lines of horrified expository outbursts.)
@VladimirNicolici2 жыл бұрын
Actually, this has almost happened near Paris, a few months ago, while landing with the ILS inoperative. From the AeroTime article: "A flight with 172 passengers came within 6 feet (1.8 meters) of hitting the ground while on approach to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), according to a report by French investigators. The Airbus A320, registration 9H-EMU and operated by wet lease specialist Airhub, was coming in to land at CDG on a flight from Stockholm Arlanda at approximately 11:40 UTC on May 23, 2022 when the near-collision occurred due to an incorrect altimeter setting. The controller twice gave the crew an incorrect QNH setting of 1011, instead of 1001, with the mistake also not being spotted by the crew, and as a result the approach was flown 280 feet lower than it should have been." What's even more disturbing: "On the second approach for landing, the faulty QNH setting was not corrected, and the aircraft was again 280 ft lower than it should have been.". So, while aviation is becoming safer and safer, there are still a lot of holes in the cheese. Many of the large passanger aircraft have outdated avionics, that can even be inferior to those used by the small GA aircraft, in terms of available features. But, as I said, things are improving. Maybe in 30 more years the scenario from this movie will actually become impossible for the commercial fleets. Unfortunately, at the moment, it is still possible. In conclusion, don't blame the script writers too much, while they got a lot of things wrong, but this part was actually plausible, if we ignore a few details.

Yea i noticed that as well but it is kinda typical for hollywood movies, more important problem here is the fact that the fuel used in this type of engines is not as flamable as they are showing here, that fuel would not burn so easy in that temperature not to mention this whole part when its burning so volatile that the flame can catch up plane that is moving with take off speed... and in the end why the plane exploded, there was no oxygen in the tank/fuel to create this explosion. That is why i think the "nice line of fuel on the ground" is not an error in comparision to all the completly wrong behaviour of the jet fuel(and it is spraying like water because it is water...). Jet fuel is more flamable than diesel fuel but less flamable than normal gasoline in temperature below freezing of water i can bet that you can put burning match in it and it will gonna just extinguish the flame on your match...

Bernardo H. Thank you. Both for paraphrasing the comment I was going to make, and for knowing the truth. Basically diesel fuel. Not "flammable", but "flameable". Huge difference!!! Russell Mooneyham I know. I have a hard time seeing airplane disaster movies. I also know the E&E bay in a 747 isn’t big enough for a crew of commandos. A truck wouldn’t get stuck on the landing gear of a plane. A back seater of a F14 wouldn’t hit the canopy during ejection, killing him and causing Tom Cruise to cry. However, I do think a creature could land on the wing during a flight and start tearing it apart. It could happen!!

14:00 Hey Kelsey, wouldn't the downdraft from the chopper mess with the airflow on the wing and make it harder to take off or steer? Are there sensors that would pick up a disturbance like that? It's hard to believe a 747 could just ignore an entire helicopter hovering over one side.

He is a board-engeneer for several types of planes An-24/26, Il-18, Yak-40 and 42. So anyway, when we came to the moment where Bruce Willis burns leaked kerosine, my father said "What a fairy-tale!. I saw this when it came out. My biggest gripe (there were several lol) was the negative ILS sequence. Your explanation wasn't as detailed as I'd like, but you prob covered it all in your ILS video which IAF, I haven't seen. Mainly that it's all based on radio fixes relative to a transmitter on the ground. It's simply sending a signal, not controlling the A/C's instrument. The glide slope is merely interpreted by the on board receiver and presented as 2 pointers, showing your lateral and vertical positioning. The only way I can think of "fooling" the plane is to bore a 200 ft deep hole in the ground, and drop the transmitter in. lol Anyway, great vid, I'm off to watch another! --Ray, 700 hr priv pilot, land/sea, hi-perf, some multi.
@tirsden2 жыл бұрын
Well, they had a CRT touch-screen monitor that could be manipulated with a magic pen so... maybe that gave directives to a robot to go dig the hole lickety-split? The robot scene obviously got left on the cutting room floor to save time for more fighting on the airplane wing. Same with the scene where they stopped the plane to quickly swap out the engine with a human body stuck in it.

There's an earlier scene where he pulls it out from under the cockpit panel (and an even earlier scene where McLane gets one of the radios from the bad guys and the tower engineer looks at it and notices the encoder). How they got that radio into a secure military plane is never explained in the movie. With a private channel I doubt he cared about radio etiquette.

The other thing about that scene was all those grenades waiting such a looooong time for Bruce to strap into that non-existent ejection seat before exploding.

If you want some 747 trivia, try this one out. That very aircraft nearly crashed in Anchorage, Alaska in 1993. After departing Anchorage in severe turbulence, the #2 engine separated from the aircraft taking a good portion of the flight controls on the left wing with it. Although the flight crew nearly lost control of the jet, they were eventually able to return to Anchorage and make an emergency landing.

I watched a video of someone “ playing “ with fuel/fire. And jet fuel, diesel, kerosine. Was unable to light them with a match/ bbq lighter. He only just about managed to get a small sustained flame by holding a lit propane torch over the fuel and even then for some time. So I am very sceptical that throwing a zippo would do anything more than extinguish the flame as it melted the snow it lay in.
