@uralicdneprov1806
@uralicdneprov1806 2 ай бұрын
Actually that rubber part doing a vacuum suction to the airplane would need to have a surface area merely 3x of that hatch area surface to compensate equalized cabin pressure, otherwise the force of cabin pressure would blew them off. Atmospheric pressure at 39,000 feet aka 12 km is around 20% of sea level pressure, so even high vacuum suction has 20% force compared to sea level. Airliner cabin is pressurized to 70% of sea level at cruising altitude if I remember. That 70 kPa cabin minus 20 kPa outside pressure applied on apparent 0.5 square meter (that hatch seems merely 0.7m by 0.7m) yields 25 kN force to be compensated, which is equivalent of 2.5 ton weight.

I started my career in as a flight instructor in my hometown. We have an airport with a single runway. If you takeoff from runway 04 and fly straight ahead, in 10 miles you find yourself almost perfectly lined up with runway 05 of the next town's airport. Well. We had a story we always told the new students, that a long time ago, a student pilot went for his first solo before learning how to turn, he only knew how to takeoff and land. The legend says that he took off from runway 04, flew straight ahead, landed on runway 05, got off the airplane, turned it around on the ground - by hand - then took off from runway 23 and landed back at our base, on runway 22. Ah yes, flight school really has some amazing times.

Nah, any fighter pilot has it on at that altitude. Also, in any emergency situation and any aircraft docking situation. What does it matter if the cargo passes out? They need it for high g manoeuvres as well as in case of depressurisation.
@Peter_Cordes
@Peter_Cordes 3 жыл бұрын
@@carbon1255 - yes, exactly. From watching fighter pilots pick apart movies (e.g. Mover Ruins Movies), apparently military regs say you are supposed to be wearing your mask at all times, especially at altitude, in case of cabin depressurization. But also importantly here, your mic is in your mask. When main characters are flying, they're always taking their masks off so the audience can see the actors, even though that's not realistic to what pilots would actually do. The more pure oxygen feed will keep you more alert and feeling better, especially at high G, than cabin air. Just one of those Hollywood things, like having planes fly *very* close formation to each other so they aren't just specs on the screen. But when you see the enemy cockpits, always masks up, and often visor down so they're more anonymous / dehumanized, especially when the movie's about to show them getting blown up or at least shot down.

Interesting that the door underneath the 747 is the most accurate thing in this film lol As far as oxygen mask for the pilot, jetfighter pilots wear them even with a pressurised cabin, as the small cabin size would empty out veryfast and hypoxia would set in too quick for the pilot to put his mask on, not so critical for the passengers in the back, but still good safety precaution nonetheless.

Yeah i noticed he got that wrong as well. When you're fooling around with some transfer of ppl out of a hatch on the roof of the plane, that may go wrong and depressurize the cabin, Pretty sure the pilot would have his mask on just in case.
@Peter_Cordes
@Peter_Cordes 3 жыл бұрын
@@FollowFunk - for sure; any science-fiction fan knows you always want your space marines in pressure suits (or at least breathing gear) for an assault when there's the possibility of depressurizing something on the way in or during fighting. You can even intentionally depressurize the target vessel to give yourself a big advantage (you're ready for it, they aren't). In this case you'd have to descend quickly to avoid permanent harm to passengers, but you might bank on regaining control of the plane while the terrorists are scrambling for O2 masks or unconscious.

I live in Frederick, and that diverted landing always cracked me up. Small biz jets are the hottest things coming in here, so I always thought this was a bit ludicrous. But after looking at it, runway 5-23 is 5220 ft with about 1700 ft of turf up front, short fence, no street lights or other obstructions on the approach, and there's really no racks of approach lights like they show in the film, just a single row of ILS/DME, and an extra 1820 ft of turf from the end of the runway to the first tree, so, hell, I guess it could be done! Only problem is that scene at 25:40. That tower is where you would expect to see it if coming from the opposite approach, and it looks like our tower, but that one didn't start getting built til' 2010! We still had are old, 2 story 1946 tower when this was filmed, and it's way off to the side of the runway. It was supposedly filmed at Van Nuys Airport, but that scene is clearly way too small a field to be Van Nuys, and nothing like their tower, so I don't know what that footage is. 3 of the Dulles runways run North-South, and they don't lead straight to Frederick. At about 26 miles you'd intersect the line up for Frederick at 50 degrees right with 6 miles to the strip, so yeah, you're gonna have to be able to turn.

The weird cockpit and system configuration is an airline option: It was custom ordered by Oceanic. Most remarkable feature: The thrust levers are actually the wrong way round!
@SaladAtuda
@SaladAtuda 5 жыл бұрын
I guess the crew got a 747 classic cockpit and painted the entire interior into that Boeing browns. The thrust levers on the front of the throttles were dismantled and they left the knobs on the back of it untouched. Probably the film crew didnt even have time to make TO/GA switchpacks for it. BTW, they also reused the -200 style engine cutoff levers and the stab/trim on the center console.
@Stoney3K
@Stoney3K 5 жыл бұрын
@@SaladAtuda Which is kind of surprising since the set piece does feature the main instrument panel screens and the MCDU/lower EICAS section as you would find on the -400. They even bothered to put working CRT monitors in there which show the correct instrumentation, with a little video interference thrown in to add in the excitement. Which still doesn't explain why the reverser handles are on the front of the throttle handles where they should really be on the back, attached to the TO/GA switch packs.

So that's the answer! Note: I am not an actual pilot. I am planning to ,so maybe I can see if I do say vegan pilot or not, but, no offense added in the reply. More may be added to reply. And If I would say that specifically as a vegan/vegetarian pilot, I would say Vegan Pilot.

In case some of you didnt know, right before the mission started...Dennis Cahil (Oliver Platt) explained what it was. He called it the *Remora F-117X.* It was an enlarged version of Lockheed's F-117A Nighthawk, modified by AARPA with a docking tube and a small cabin to accommodate a bomber crew. It's purpose is to link up with B-52s to transfer current bomber crews with the new ones from the F-117X. Originally, they we're gonna use it to link up with Space Shuttles in Low-Earth Orbit, clearly...that idea never happaned.

@@mr.bluesky3298 according to the film, it's a sub-orbital stealth transport that was meant to dock with the space shuttles to transfer new crew, but was not fully implemented by NASA, instead it was continued to be modified for the air force to link up with B-52s midflight to transfer bomber crews and can even perform other contingencies, like docking under a 747.

The part about reducing the airspeed "as indicated" is explained when you hear the paper rustling as the hijacker says it, and you notice the piece of paper he hands to the captain. There's probably some instructions written on it. Who knows why it had to be on a paper, but there is a paper.
