Your explanation was very clear and concise. You made me realize how complex communicating can be.

In Brazil we use air quotes also to refer a speech of someone, for exemplo, Mark said: "Canada is a country of immigrant".

Bending peace signs ... 🤣🤣🤣 The funniest description of quotation mark I’ve EVER heard ... Chill out buddy, as long as it’s not middle finger, is All okay 😆
@katalinmartonnenagy3105 жыл бұрын
We use (in Hungarian) quotation marks in writing when we want to cite /quote a certain text. However you can see in English the quoted text between 'quote' and 'unquote'. We call these inverted commas as catclaws (sleng).

I have seen many times my colleagues and Canadian friends have used air quotes, but I have never thought that it has a special meaning. I am sure if I asked them they would tell me the meaning; however, it would not have been as clear to me as you described. Thank you so much Marks.

Don’t use them because it distracts from what you are saying, shouldn’t be encouraged, it’s just a new arty farty way of saying look at me where in reality you look like an idiot.

Hey Mark!! I didn't know what the air quotation means but right now I do. In my country, the tea is the moroccan "beer" of the most people since 1907 when France colonized Morocco. Take care!!

Thanks Mark. You are awesome. I learned a lot from you and your amazing lessons. I'm going to take a CELPIP exam next week and it's been more than 8 mouths I'm watching your videos. I hope I can make it. I'll let you know. Actually I'm watching your videos through my PS4 and it's very hard to put comments through PS4. But I've recommended your KZbin channel to all my friends and they appreciated it and are following you. Keep going and thanks again.

It is right that when air quotes are written in a sentence, these are for highlighting words,if these are used with people's tongue as well as motion; that is like "bending the fingers twice", these have a white lie meaning?
@MadEnglishTV6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that can have that meaning. :)

Aren't air quotes used when you are quoting someone else? So if you are using someone elses words to describe something, you are putting it in air quotes because you are saying their own words or someone elses words back to them.

Lol, would you like to know how much your videos are up to date? A few hours ago I went to my favourite clothes shop, which I hadn't visited for around 6 months, and I send my friend the msg - "I am not going to buy anything. I am not even in a mood for trying anything on there." It turned out that I was obviously lying to myself when saying that, A few hours later, while I was watching this video of yours, my friend sent me a msg asking how did my "window shopping" go. I took a pic of your examples and sent him. We laughed our heads off. 😂😂😂

are you being sincere when you say that they are helpful? if so, then your quotes are NOT right. if you think the videos are not helpful, then you can sarcastically say they are "really" helpful. the air quotes show a wink, or indicate that you mean the opposite of what you said.
