Coaches, What formation do you like to run the Mesh concept out of? What are you favorite TAGs for the Mesh concept?
@jordansmith63707 жыл бұрын
I like it best of out of a 3x1 set. We run it a little bit different and use 4 tags with it on multiple receivers. We also do a triple mesh concept, similar to what Boise State runs, backs cross, and the shallow concept. Mesh is a staple in our offense!

We run mesh out of 2x2 and 3x1. In 2x2 out of te set or doubles it's the Z running a speed out, y running mesh, f running mesh, X running a deep dig, and the rb running a swing/wheel. 3x1 is z with a speed out, f mesh, y runs the dig sit, x runs the mesh and rb on a wheel

We have a few one word play calls thanks to you but we use a board that we hold up to signal it in. The board is 3 tall and 2 wide and every picture has meaning to it. The top left tile is usually an NFL or NBA player with the number 12,13,22,31 which signals the wideouts positions. (example: Trips right is a picture of James Harden #13) The top right is a variation of the wideouts position. So if it Trey Left for example, we put a word with the wideout on the lines first letter (example: Young). If no variation we usually put a picture of an airplane because I'm fascinated with airplanes. The middle left tile is the protection. Our quick game protection is Rio for example so we put a picture of Rio in Brazil. Another example of protections is Louisville. Louisville is rollout left so we put up a picture of Lamar Jackson, who plays for Louisville. If it's a run play, we put either a lamp or a pirate (homage to leach) which means nothing. The middle right if it is a pass play will also have a lamp or pirate which means nothing. Our run plays are numbered in series (homage to wing t, which i quarterbacked in) 46 Zone is zone right and the players know that. The picture just is the number of the run concept, which signifies right or left outside or inside. The bottom right is bluff and so is the bottom left is too because this is our clock eating method and we wait 20 seconds to make a play call based upon how we feel. (40 second play clock) Our NASCAR (2minute) is signaled or one word play called. We run our offense at a high paced usually so we usually have either a messenger guard or wideout. Does this seem difficult? And could you make a video on this topic?

Also how many one word calls is too much
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach McCauley, I wish I could get into the play calling boards. Just never figured out how to use them. Plus, I don't want to keep bringing them to games with me. If your kids get the boards then don't worry about the difficulty. I did a video on one-word plays. I would say anything over four one word plays is too much. Again, that's just my opinion. If your players can get it then do more.

I love the concept of mesh but I dont like the built in corner route. I prefer a choice route. Inside release seam is a safety drops you have a big play. If you the safety stays, I like the idea of hitching up about seven step then floating to grass over the LBers. That way if LBers squat you have an easy throw over.

We use this out of the bunch but instead of using our back as a receiver, he becomes a lead blocker for the QB, who sprints out to the flood side with an RPO. Our QB was more like a passing FB from the single wing days. He averaged 8 yards per carry and 8 yards per pass attempt. The flood-side meshing receiver caught most of the thrown balls and was open almost every time we ran the play, and he used the downfield blocking of the other two flood-side receivers to pick up YAC.

Wonderful video as always coach I love the mesh play. In 2x2 and 3x1 I like to tag it F mesh or y mesh. In trips we do what you do and align the back to the trips side and he will check protection to flat route. Whichever inside recover isn't meshing will run a post. I also like to run it out of empty. In 2x2 and 2x1 we will tag the corner to run a dig or post.
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach Clarke, Thanks for the compliment coach. It means a lot to me. Which receiver would you say runs the Mesh more for you: F or Y? I'm asking because I might mix it up this upcoming Spring. The Y for us always set the Mesh, but I might let him run some Post or Dig out of 3x1, and have the F become the mesher.
@andrewclarke30447 жыл бұрын
Coach McKie we prefer to run both. 2x2 Y mesh X: come under mesh F: flats RB: Flats Y: set the mesh Z: post Corner F Mesh X: corner F: set the mesh RB: Flats Y: flats Z: come under mesh 3x1 Y mesh X: come under mesh F: flats RB: Flats Y: set the mesh Z: corner Corner Y mesh X: come under mesh F: flats RB: Flats Y: flats Z: corner On trips the receiver not meshing we can tag a post, seam, or dig. Or we can tag the guy running the corner to run a dig or post. In doubles we can tag a post or dig instead of a corner. I think mesh is an excellent play to give tags. Along with Four Verticals.

Hey, I'm a Wing-T guy, but I enjoy learning about the Spread, especially since the Varsity coaches at my school have been combining the two. Why have coaches abandoned the old Mesh play where the Y would run a whip route instead of crossing? It seems like this would make the reads easier and allow for more players to be used in protection.
@randytongue7 жыл бұрын
Actually, I think it would be the R running the whip and the Y running the corner in the old version of mesh.
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach Tongue, Thank you for taking time out of your day to watch my video and leave a comment. It means a lot to me that you would do that. Combining the Wing-T run game with the Air Raid passing game should be considered cheating. I wouldn't say coaches have abandoned the play. They just use it as a tag. I know we do. We call it Mesh Return.
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach Tongue, You are talking about Andrew Coverdale's version of Mesh, right? If that is the case then Coach Coverdale's Mesh is like the Air Raid's Y-Corner or Noel Mazzone's Snag concept.
@randytongue7 жыл бұрын
I think you're right about Coverdale using the play. I think he used it with bunch sets. That makes sense that the play is still used but with different names. Thank you for replying.

Coach Mckie we use the same concept except that the F (A) runs a wheel and the R (R) will run either a pin or a comeback upon tag word. Example: 22 Flex R Miami Mesh R Pin 22 is formation, 2 by 2 set R means side back is on Miami is the pass protection Do you think high school players would have any problem understanding the play call/formation? Is it difficult? I GA'd at a small college in Texas and then I got an OC job at a small 2A in another state and as I speak today I'm in conversations about how to fix some technical tweaks in the offense. Do you see anything wrong?
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach McCauley, That play call seems a little wordy. How would you signal that in? Hand signals, wrist band, or huddle? You could do it as simple as Ace 92. That's how the Hal Mumme calls it. Tells the formation, play, and protection.
@kylemadden26807 жыл бұрын
Coach Great video. Do you only run the mesh with y setting the mesh and the R running the corner? To the right? Do you ever flip it where the L runs the corner and the f sets the mesh?
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach Madden, Thanks for taking time out of your day to watch my video and leave a comment. It means a lot to me that you would do that. If we are in our 2x2 formation or our 3x1 to the right then the R would be running the corner. If we go 3x1 to the left then the L would run the corner. I've never ran the Mesh with the F setting the mesh, but it is something I am going to experiment with this Spring. I'm going to try to run the Mesh like this out of 3x1 to the right: L runs the Mesh route, F sets the Mesh, Y runs a 10 yard 10, and the R has the option of running a Post/Corner/Out based on the Corner's leverage.
@gtl7617 жыл бұрын
When you have the R run the Post/corner/Out, is it signaled between the QB and R or just based on Corner's pre-snap alignment? also have you every looked at having the R run the Shake route (45 deg in for 5 yards, stem straight down the field for 5 yards then break back out to corner)? Just curious. Great presentation.
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach Lahmers, We start out by having the wide receiver single to the quarterback. Once they've ran the play enough then they will both know what route is going to run because of the leverage of the corner. I haven't thought about having the R run the Shake route. Do you use the Shake route? Is it better than the standard corner?
@gtl7617 жыл бұрын
Coach, thanks for the reply. As to the shake not sure but seems it will give you more outside space to run the cut out to the corner if you are center of field or slightly less to the side of the receiver running the corner route than a straight vertical release downfield and then cut to the end-zone pylons.

What do you tell the mesh guys when running against a 4-2 box, as far as who to pick and who to read for grass?
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach Gaming, They will be watching the linebacker to see what he does once the Mesh happens. Does the linebacker widen? Then they will sit down after the Mesh. Does the linebacker stay inside the box after the Mesh? Then I will chase the grass on the outside.
