*No injuries were reported during evacuation progress.* Trucks approached the aircraft and saw smoke coming out of the rear cargo hold. That is when the crew decided to immediately evacuate the aircraft on the runway. Great job done by everyone! ;)

Car 99 at KJFK is the shift supervisor for the airport authority vehicles - so probably it's the same at Newark as they both belong to the same port authority.

It now appears that no actual fire was found, but the cause of the smoke is under investigation. According to NJ.Com: UPDATE (1 p.m. Saturday): The Associated Press reported that "no fire was found inside the plane, and the cause of the smoke in the cargo area remains under investigation". I'll post again if there is further news.

The airplane continued on its journey about 7:30 this evening. I was flying as an FO on a different flight and I watched it take off. I actually saw the plane on short final this morning as I pulled into the parking lot. I was thinking, Air Transat never comes to Newark. Then, I saw all of the fire trucks surround the plane.

Wrong. Air Transat sent another B747 from Toronto to embark the passengers from the first plane. That first plane is still parked in Newark.

"Mayday" is only used once on initial declaration of emergency to emphasize extreme urgency. Most Emergencies can be declared in normal conversational language. Definitely no need to say "mayday" to tower when they're fully aware and equipment is standing by. Example of training reflexes taking over common sense. He also calls a fire truck "red one". This is obviously the call sign they used in training at Air Transat. Always makes me nervous flying with guys who use reflexes instead of clear adaptable thinking.
