I have an interest in the Air Bike and have been binge watching your videos. I find it interesting that people with the same internet access as you and I will boldly ask you for copies of the plans to build from. I always liked Wayne Ison's designs, met him years ago at Oshkosh.

Great vid! Amazing combination of using old school construction methods combined with cutting edge jigging and measurment! I'd like to think I could do a build like this but I know I can't🤣

Hi Dag, you're an inspiration to us all ! Great work, love what you create & I enjoy how you explain your method :) Thinking about a half scale model for a moment, with a 200 lb pilot, 4 gallons of fuel and an empty weight of 254 lb's for a take off weight of 480 lb's that gives us a wing cube loading of 6 (yes, it works for full size aircraft too ;) which makes the half scale model 60 lb's for the same WCL.... if you used the same materials and constructions but half as thick etc. the empty weight with motor/engine would be right around 32 lb's (plus RC gear on top etc.) add a half scale Dag pilot of course ... awesome ! :D Although using the same materials at half scale would be an 1/8th of the cost it would probably still be about the same amount of work and tig welding steel half the thickness of the full size air frame could be very easy to blow through, a lot of hard work. However.... using carbon rods, or even beach dowels epoxied together would be a lot easier and 3D printed ribs reinforced with carbon tow plus a balsa cap strip to make the covering easier to adhere, would make the work a lot easier :) Just a thought, but given your skills I'm sure you could design a half scale Airbike that is relatively quick and cheap to build. I know you've got plenty of projects going but how cool would it be to have a half scale model of your full size Airbike. I just think it's too cool not to do, plus given that you've already modeled quite a lot of the Airbike in CAD you're half way there already. Btw, from what you've described in the video I feel more inclined to describe this as a reinforced Airbike more than I would describe it as a modified Airbike, either way, it's a brilliant project and it's great to see it come to life !! :)

Great info. I have really thought about a 65% Airbike. But that would be years down the road. Rock ON!

@@dagtheaviator I had a feeling you might have considered something like this already, although the half scale would be 156 inches across, which is still huge by your own standards, and mine too ! :) Nice thing about building a scale model with the same WCL is that you can fully explore the edges of the flight envelope at a distance ;) But at 65% scale that would mean a flying weight of 132 lb's or so to keep the same WCL ... which you probably already know .. if you find an RC pilot you trust perhaps you could strap the 65% version on top and launch it mid air a bit like the Space Shuttle during it's glide tests, would be a great gimmick for the shows :) I recently saw a 67% Extra 300 do a formation aerobatic routine with a full sized Extra 300, it was spectacular !! :D Anyhow, I reckon a half scale AirBike is within reach of the peasant builder wanting to build a giant scale model as it could be done with cheap materials as you would have to work hard to make it a lead sled, unless one were to use concrete ..... and the construction would be relatively simple with super easy flight characteristics :) Anyhow, looking forward to your flight videos of the full size as there is nothing quite like getting up into the air for real :D I just recently hit a wee 500 hours milestone with my paragliding and I am never happier than when my feet leave the ground :D

There is a secret to coping close. Use small rods tied to your pipe you want to cope make sure they surround the pipe to be coped. Push rods lined up to point of contact the rods will take the shape of the cope trace that and there is your cope. Hope you can imagine this. Great vid!

Hi! Great work you are doing with the Airbike. Do you need to do any paperwork or any process to legaly fly this airplane? or by being just a part 103 ultralight airplane it doesn't need to do any licence-related work?

I would like to know if you could go electric power batteries are fuel so they are not part of the empty weight and that is right up your alley.👍🏽Enjoying your Channel.

My 254 pounds is with fuel, not empty. Max 5 Gallons. It would be easy to go electric. But, flight times would be about 30 minutes. With gas about 1.5 hours. Rock ON!

I know that u don’t know me from Adam however would you be willing to allow me to barrow or maybe rent your jigs etc that you 3D printed? Or buy? You sir are a fine builder!
