Good to see that a new tool Airfix kit meets the fit standards of an 80s era Tamiya kit.

Thank you for posting this vid. I found it very informative to say the least. I'm surprised at Airfix having fit issues on a brand new mould (thought it was all designed with 3d technology and the likes). However, being a veteran Airfix builder from the 70's... I guess it just means we humble modellers will just have to roll our sleeves up and persevere. However, as one of the previous commenters stated... paying approx. £30 for a kit... we should expect better.j

You are right, it feels as though a 3D CAD assembly was made but no physical build was performed to show the fit/profile mis-matches. Overall a poor kit to build, but the results can be nice if you take time to correct them

Great job, although there were quite a few areas that did not have such a good fit. You did a great job filling and getting everything to look so good in the end, well done mate.

You may already have figured this out, but I believe the fit issues you had with the fuselage halves were due to the gun bays, I guess leaving them off would have avoided your issue.
@TheInnerNerd

Yes I figured as much. It's a shame that you get this option and Airfix shows off the fact that you can open up so many of the panels in this cut, yet doesn't engineer the fit of them without the need for removing material to gt things to fit correctly

Being a Tamiya fan and having grown up in the Airfix era ( I still remember my first 1/72 Supermarine spitfire...wow!!!) I find it honest to say that Heller models are far worse than both - On the other hand, Airfix falls in the middle. One final thing to comment : If you are a scratch builder these issues are not so bad ( there is nothing Putty can´t do in the hands of a talented builder ). Thanks for your excellent video!!!

So there seems to be some areas of concern with this kit, taking notes.

I had (minor) issues too, as the video. I had to use some plastic shim to fill the wing root gaps, bad enough. However, the nosecone fit is appalling. Try as I might, it would not fit neatly, or even adequately to leave just a bit of filler to be applied. It seems the as well as a bad fit, the nose wheel leg also assembly fouls the fit of the nosecone. So not only does the nosecone not marry to the fuselage, but the nose wheel leg gets in the way. Appalling from a brand-new £30+ kit, one that in the end I binned in frustration. Sorry Airfix, I believed in this kit. Not any more.

You binned it? God. It must've been bad...

Sadly yes because up until that point the fit issues had been minor and on the limits of acceptability from a brand-new tool. I had so believed in the kit and was looking forward to the finished result. At first I thought it was me but it seems virtually everyone else, if not everyone else, has had similar problems. I've been criticised for not working on it, but why should I? Yes I became frustrated with myself as well as the kit; after two hours of messing about the nosecone and adjoining area were ruined. I've paid for the toolmaker to do his job, let him do it.

The fit issues are due to not test fitting and using that awful poly cement.
@TheInnerNerd

Time Waster Digital Have you built this kit as well? Some more people on here have built this kit and had exactly the same problems. I've moved on now from poly cement, you are right it's not accurate at all!
@vasili1207

Not exactly that kit infact I just finished my first airfix aircraft today. I have experience with that glue . What happens is that is melts plastic with that melt you lose a fraction of a millimetre in squish and the kits are so tight fit that squish makes it not fit unless you sand internal parts to account for that squish. If that makes sense. Also poly cemet takes weeks to cure it develops a skin but still unstable for a long time. I use super glue applied with a needle. Easy diy applicator is get a needle push it into a dowl cut the top of the eye off use a stanly blade to oped the eye a bit. The CA will sit in the eye until applied , then when finished burn the ca off needle with lighter put in tool box. I am more of a computer modeller check my shit vids :) but I built a few when i was a 10 year old kid mainly cars , but in a month I bought 5 planes 1 tank and a artillery piece :) hooked

Time Waster Digital You're clearly not an experienced modeller. I agree the Revell stuff is crap. But your explaination why and alternative method are just plain wrong. Having a bit of "squish" is the most used method for avoiding gaps after sanding and is widely adviced. Using CA to glue major parts is the most stupid thing you can do and I literally don't know any decent modellers that use CA for fuselages and wings. Once it sets CA is fixed while especially with large parts you need some "play time" to get them just right. And yes we all know how to use a needle for CA, modellers have done it that way since CA existed. Please don't act like you know it al, because you clearly don't. You haven't even built the kit or any other Airfix planes even, just buying a stash of kits does not make you an expert. You're just making yourself look stupid.

You obviously don't know a thing just a troll. If you even clicked on my name and went to the Google account you see I am posting pictures. Just because you need "need wiggle time" to make your kits makes me think you are the unskilled modell builder or should I say sloppy model builder. Tolerances ain't like 60s shit they used to make. Fact is you are a troll .

Time Waster Digital the whole point of poly cement is that it MELTS the plastic not stick it. the statements you made suggest you are crap at modeling

For how much this kit costs the fit of this and other airfix kits is not up to the standard they should be , thats what caused airfix to have financial problems in the late 80s sadly they dont seemed to have learned from their past mistakes, which is a shame cos they make some interesting models, ive only watched a couple of your videos but i found them to be excellent .

Lets be honest the fit of some Airfix kits is terrible , i know they make some types of aircraft that other makers dont do , but in this day and age when you are paying between £20 and £30 for a kit you should expect the fit to be much better than it is, on some things there no better than they were in the 80s and 90s ,its just not good enough .

Yes you can tell its a airfix kit the molding lacks the crispness of Japanese kits and the fit to leaves a lot to be desired , i really dont know why in this day and age with the price you pay for a kit that airfix still are not as good as as japanese manufacturers , if they carry on doing this they will go under and frankly they will only have themselves to blame . I had not brought an airfix kit for years and when it came out i brought the Mig-15 and the fit of the kit was no better than kits had been in the 80s , i was very disappointed , now i will only buy from them if no other manufacturer does a particular aircraft , the fit and crispness of the kits are not worth the money.
