Absolutely fantastic. Who could have imagined that this incredible and beautifully designed and built Airflo would fly slope sdoaring with radio control. Congratulations. Ray Malmström was a real genius. His designs, always simple, very attractive and wonderful flyers, were and still are built and flown by new generations of modelers the world over. We really miss him. He was also a wonderful and kind and generous human being. Best wishes, EDUARDO from Colombia.

Good to see this again. A special mention for its designer, the late Ray Malmstrom, who inspired generations of modellers. Pleased to read in the comments here a reference to freeflight slope soaring. Something I still do today, using converted chuck gliders and Lidl foamies.

Fly's very nice and always, a nice video! What is pretty cool is, with the micro and nano size of receivers, batteries and servos available these days, a lot of the old stick and tissue kits can be converted to RC pretty easily.

The Airflo was the first glider I built as a kid from that red book. I used to free flight slope it. Brings back memories. Thanks

I am absolutely amazed by the tiny electronics that make this possible. I have 2 really small rc planes and they usually fly when nothing else will.

That reminded me, that when I was somewhat younger, around 1980, we flew slightly larger rudder elevator gliders, 190 grams, 75cm span, 7.5 cm chord, solid balsa wings, fibre glas fuselage. They flew quite fast and felt way faster than they were - felt way faster than F3B models.

Great flying, and amazing camera work as usual. I'm sure it's an extra challenge to film the small planes

Sweet! What controls does it have?
@SlopeRCGliders11 ай бұрын
Just rudder and elevator
@terryoneill497411 ай бұрын
When you bank an aircraft, The rising wing creates drag, this has to be compensated with a touch of opposite rudder. These rules don't seem to apply to modellers.

Having just rudder and elevator is for simplicity and lightness in such a small model. The polyhedral wing then induces the bank when only rudder is used to turn.

Very nice John. Looks very well behaved. Do you have a Thermic 72?

I’ve never built a Thermic but I really like the look of them..

By the way, can you provide us the brand and availability of the radio control system you used on this model? Thanks a lot:

Hi there, I built this model a few years ago and can’t remember the exact bits I used in it, but it would have just been some cheap 9g servos and a micro Spektrum receiver.

I have spent many years flying gliders. By the seat of my pants. How these chaps get their feedback. Baffles me.😂
@SlopeRCGliders11 ай бұрын
You don’t really get much feel with a glider as small as this but it’s surprising how much feedback a normal sized model glider gives you. Apart from the purely visual cues, it’s possible to feel the glider airspeed slow down, as the transmitter stick movements get bigger to have the same effect on the glider. And when it going fast everything becomes super sensitive on the controls.
