Hi Josh. Sorry about your weird experience in Mozambique. I am Mozambican and once I had to "rescue" a friend who went through nonsense trouble on arrival in Maputo, allegedly because there was an error on reading his passport data. It turned out later that the computers at the immigration were not working properly. When I asked to see the screen I realized it was clear enough to the reader to tell my friend was the legitimate owner of the passport. By that time he had already spent 20 hours at the airport, with no access to food, no access to his checked luggage and no permission to enter the country. Fortunately I was able to provide what he needed to survive. All that probably only because he (and I) did not bring the officer any "chocolate". My friend now tells me he will never come to visit me in Mozambique again. So sad!

They tried to do the same with me when leaving Maputo Airport. Security guard asked how much money I had and how much I could give him in order to return my passport, so I could board the airplane. After saying I had no money at all, he asked me if I could pay him a coffee, which I declined as well. Shocking!!!

the Mozambican Immigration officers are notorious for this sort of blatant asking for bribes, I am Kenyan and the stories I've herd of people getting flown back is just a sad tale, FYI, we are not any better dealing with the same scourge of corruption either, Africa countries really need to work on this, to allow seamless transition of legally travelling passengers with little to no fuss, allows for a very great experience for everyone from arrival to departure, always good to catch a Josh Cahill video, such great content, love it.

@@robertdaniel5461 It can be considered acceptable in diplomatic terms that a foreign GOVERNMENT can take your passport in the case of a bona fide criminal case to prevent a foreigner from fleeing. But the passport is the property of the US government and a private airline company has no standing to take it from you. Before you surrender it, a quick call to the US Embassy is in order. The US embassy should be able to advise you. They could suggest that you surrender but send them a picture of it so they could reissue a temporary passport if you were left stranded for some reason. Or they might advise not to surrender and attempt to intervene with the airline and that country's government (not so likely). In any case, I would at least try to contact them locally by cell phone while at the airport and ask for advice before giving it up, IF you are not in legal trouble. After all, it is US property that the airline is trying to take from you and they may have standard policies and certainly can assist you with a replacement as long as they are aware of the abuse of that govt's diplomatic imperative to allow you freedom of travel across their border. It doesn't seem like a hard thing to do and one should always have embassy/consulate contact information when traveling to different countries.

While most of your colleagues are in it for the fame or wouldn't be caught dead outside of business class, you actually show us the real, everyday challenges that real people have to go through, warts and all. You also keep it real by flying the airlines and airplanes available to everyday real people, not just 5 star carriers with gilded apartments in the sky. If I ever travel to Africa, I now know what to expect, which airlines to fly, which ones to avoid and what type of sneaky little tricks to expect at the airports. KUDOS TO YOU!!

Even back then, flying on a 737-200 in the US was quite rare and special. There were also Northwest and JAL DC-10s and ATA L-1011s at Honolulu back then. It was a different era for sure.

Hi Josh, Thanks for your clip. It brought disturbing memories from my trip to Maputo last year. The people OUTSIDE the airport are lovely, but the airport.... Especially on my departure, no wifi, and corrupt customs officials... I was stopped at customs during my departure process and was asked by several important looking officers " what money do i have to buy souvenirs"... I said that i have hardly any cash, and that i will buy souvenirs with my CC... Than they called to chief officer who requested to check my wallet.... I kept playing dumb, knowing exactly what they wanted...after 20 min hold up,the bunch got tired of me and let me go free. On one hand it annoys me, but on the other i know these gov employees make redicilous salaries, so who can blame them? Very sad. BTW, i stayed in the famous Serena Polana Hotel, even the Q of England stayed there once...:) Not really expensive, around 170$ and well worth the special ambiance and good old days gone. Any how, on another topic, the B762 still flies for UTair in Russia, especially on long haul like Moscow to Anadyr. Cheers. Cheers

I got excited once you mentioned Aloha Air, as I remember the 737's (and their 200's) fondly as a kid! Felt like a mini-reunion with an old friend! But I don't know what you're going off about with "not so fond memories" (save for that one incident that landed safely!) Miss those jets. It's *definitely* not the same seeing Southwest 737's fly our interisland routes now.

You should really make a separate channel maybe to show your touring experience in the cities you visit! It doesn't have to be all adventurous, probably a simple street exploration and cultural stuff!! :)

Nice review once again! Hope you enjoyed your African aviation tour, and obviously I would love too see a review of this 737-200. By the way I thought of you today as I was supposed to fly Air Peace, your new favourite airline, from Lagos to Abuja. Just learned at the airport that there was a 7 hours delay, surprising isn't it😁? Finally booked a ticket with United Nigeria on an Embraer 145, not too bad. Take care👍🏼!

737-200's are still flying in Quebec because they can land on gravel runways up North. Nolinor has the largest fleet and Chrono aviation has one also.

As for the 737-200s, I flew a lot on them from the 1970s to the 1990s (yes, I'm old), as they used to be the workhorse of major trunk domestic flights in Brazil, where I'm from. Later, in the 2000s, a very traditional airline, VASP, was having financial difficulties and had no money to renew its fleet, so it kept flying the -200s while all other airlines had switched to 737 Classics and NGs or A320s. I remember being outside a major shopping mall in São Paulo that is right under the approach path to busy domestic Congonhas Airport and a short distance from it, so it's a great spotting place, as planes pass almost overhead and are already so low that if you look quickly enough, you can read their registration. And I remember the striking difference in noise levels between VASP's 737-200s and the more modern jets of other airlines. Modern engines not only produce less noise, they are also designed to project the noise backward and for little of it to reach the ground. So, when an A320 or a 737 NG passed, I could only hear the noise for some 2 or 3 seconds, when it was directly overhead, but you knew a 737-200 was coming before it appeared in sight, and you could still hear it for quite some time after it had already passed. And it was VERY LOUD!!! Later, the inevitable happened: VASP went bankrupt and stopped flying, but its bankruptcy was a very complicated legal mess that dragged in the notoriously slow Brazilian courts for several years. In the meantime, the planes were judicially impounded and prevented from being sold or from receiving any maintenance (VASP had few leased planes, most were its own), their abandoned airframes decaying in several Brazilian airports. Eventually the courts authorized their sale, but by then they were beyond any repair and had to be sold just for the price of the scrap metal, which didn't even pay for one month of the airport parking fees. Not even the engines could be salvaged. Most airframes were scrapped, and a few were towed somewhere else in complicated operations to become restaurants or such. 😭

Fun fact, engines used by 732 also used by MD80 series. That powerful roar of the JT8D engine is unforgettable 😁
@goytabr
@goytabr 2 жыл бұрын
@@PilotProjectTV, not exactly. That was true for the DC-9, of which the MD-80 design was an improvement, but not for the MD-80 itself. The MD-80 was developed over a decade after the 737-200, so it has more advanced engines. The JT8D engine series had evolved during that period, and the MD-80 uses the JT8D-200 model, which is far more efficient and less noisy than the earlier JT8D models (JT8D-7 through JT8D-17) used in the 737-200. If you compare a DC-9 with an MD-80, you will notice that the latter's engine nacelles are bigger because of the higher bypass rate of the JT8D-200. It suffices to say that a few MD-80s are still in use in Eastern Europe, and major Western European airlines like SAS and Alitalia still flew them until just a few years ago. Europe currently has very stringent noise regulations, and the 737-200 is now banned from operating at European airports for that reason, but the MD-80 is not.
