Honestly think the 8 looks better. I am 1/2 through the video, and wanted to say the one difference I do see is at appears the 9 maybe has just a touch more dynamic range resulting in very slight advantage of image quality, however, not sure it's enough for me to make the jump to a 9 unless I got one for a extremely crazy deal!

I watched a lot of comparison videos as I'm about to buy a GoPro for the first time. I replayed and paused a lot during these videos and studied the shots in detail. My personal observations are that the Hero 8 and 9 during daytime video are very similar but you can surely tell a difference when moving quickly. As an example, the grass was more defined on the 9 as you moved and I believe this is due to the quicker focus ability of the 9. Also, buildings in the background were crisper and more defined with the 9 but if you already own the 8, it might not be a big enough difference to upgrade at the moment. As far as night shots are concerned, the 8 does have the slightly brighter picture but the 9 has slightly more definition. When looking at buildings at night, the 9 does provide a clearer image but it's a very small difference compared to the 8 and the 8 is slightly brighter. I'm torn on this because obviously the brighter 8 would be more desirable if shooting a night video of something important to you. However, the ability to make out distant features on buildings or structures on the 9, does have some appeal. I think the majority of people shoot during daylight hours so the 9 wins in my opinion for those shots. The ability for it to focus faster and provide crisp clean video at fast speeds as well as it's slightly better colors is just hands down a great upgrade from the 8. Again though, if you already own the 8, it might not seem appealing to you to upgrade for just a little better picture quality when the 8 still looks amazing. If your one of the few that needs to shoot at night, then it's a hard decision as I'm one of those people and I don't know which way to go. I think in the end I'm gonna buy the 9 because it's better overall, even if the night pics are just a bit darker. I don't feel it's dark enough to not warrant the purchase. Certainly not as dark as some other cheaper action cams.

the best natural looking stabilization was implemented in Sony fdr x3000. Although only for handheld filming, because it doesn't eliminate high frequency vibrations.

Both the GoPro Hero 8 Black & Hero 9 Black was comparable with stabilization, but I like the image of Hero 9 Black being sharper, more vibrant colours & faster focusing. All other features the Hero 9 Black was far ahead, I still own the GoPro Hero 6 Black so I'm due for an upgrade & the Hero 9 Black would be a massive improvement for a replacement....

Great review, as always! I have watched a lot of comparisons between the 8 and the 9 and my impression is that the 9 has a little more stuttering/jerkiness when panning (like it looses some frames). I think I can see it here also, when the car turns I think that the Hero 8 handle it just a touch smoother if you look at the tree line. Maybe I´am wrong...

great video comparison! I actually prefer not to have the horizon leveled all the time as this detracts from the action, which these cameras are designed to capture. For example, when filming on the buggy at the football field, the 9 created an impression that it is mounted on a lawn mower, whereas the 8 added that feeling of speed and action by not leveling the horizon. Great to see Niagara Falls (Canadian side) in the night video comparison :)

@ItchyPilauBoto808 I want the 9 because the media mod has the 3.5 mm jack for external mics i am tired of all the problems with the hero 5 black 6 black and 7 black mic adapter problems ... have had well over 100 videos record without audio because it disconnected the mic even though the adapter was plugged into the camera and mic was plugged into adapter it randomly disconnects through the software one thing i hate about gopro they do 1 or 2 updates on cameras like the hero 6 black and hero 7 black and then they never get another update again and your stuck with glitches and problems even though you complain they never fix them and never give updates for older cameras even after you explain what the problems are what they do is fix them problems on the next model of camera instead of releasing updates for older cameras to fix there problems....

Around 5:10 I noticed the trees appeared sharper in contrast in 9 compared to 8. Were their settings equal?? Horizon leveling not much use as many of us do not shoot in that extreme. Even we did, we would want people to know it, but Hero 9 would kill that evidence. 😆

I think either or camera would do just fine it’s whatever you can get the best price on. Do some looking around on Amazon and some other online shops for deals. Hero9 Black on the go Pro website is cheaper but the caveat is you have to subscribe to their go pro plus service for a year. In hindsight it’s not a bad thing because you do have insurance on your camera if you happen to break it. They will replace it for a small fee

I must admit till this day my DJI Osmo Plus with it's Z axis arm eliminates the bouncing effect in walking stabilization. You don't need to learn the ninja walk.

Main thing we have seen so far is that the 9 footage is blurry compared to the 8 are you finding that? We are needing another Gopro but we think maybe another 8 is the go.

Even with a bigger sensor next year I don’t think low light stabilization can be improved much. Even the 1 inch Insta360 struggles for stabilization. I’m hoping they had a form of optical stabilization, that will help greatly. If smart phones can put optical image stabilization in those tiny little cameras I’m sure a go pro can figure it out they have much more room to work with

Most of the problem is shutter speed. You can be stable all you want, but if you have longer shutter speeds and move the camera it will look blurry. Unless you use strong ND filters the GoPro will have a very high shutter speed. It has a fixed aperture, and the ISO can only get you so far. So, the shutter speed goes up during the day, and very slow in the dark, hence blurry video.
