@@ckobo84 In 2022 where we are supposed to except "Drag Queen Story Hour" at public libraries and "Family Friendly Drag" shows at bars where adults give small children money to put in the under ware of Transvestites, the pedophile remarks of the captain are as funny as saying "It's cloudy today". To many it is simply normal conversation that you can have with children now. Like the Jews in "Monty Python's Life of Brian" arguing about the rights of a man identify as a woman and have the "right to have babies". Back then it was funny and insane. Barbara Billingsly was the woman who could speak jive-- the ma from Leave it to Beaver. The two black dudes wrote their lines in this (Abrahm and both Zuckers all agreed they were funnier than what they originally wrote) and coached her though the scene. This movie was just as much as collaboration from the actors as it was from ZAZ-- the panicky woman getting the shit beat out of her suggested having the line of other passengers with weapons of escalating violence and ZAZ thought it was hilarious the moment she described it. Also, the dude checking the radar range and playing basketball on the Atari is Johnathan Banks, aka Mike Ermintrout from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul.

Peter Graves, Robert Stack, Leslie Nielson et al, were all serious actors. When the studio sent the script to Peter Graves ( Capt Over), he read, and threw it in the trash. *Airport,* a novel by Arthur Hailey, though, is really good *if* you assume it takes place in this *Airplane!* universe. The air traffic control chief is overworked, another atc operator is contemplating ending his life, a stewardess is pregnant by a married pilot, there's a blizzard and only two runways are barely kept open thanks to continuous efforts of snow removal crews, the airport field manager is needed to clear a plane that skidded sideways and is stuck in ice on the longer runway and he's on the road and only five minutes away but stuck behind a jacknifed semi-truck that he is helping the local authorities to clear from the road so he can get to work and do more of the same, the rich neighborhood at the end of the only open runway is having a community meeting to sue the airport for noise pollution, and a plane that has been partially blown up by a suicide bomber needs the runway that the stuck plane is on because the damaged plane is too big and too damaged to use the shorter open runway. CHAOS! THRILLS! TAKEOFF! FLYING! LANDING! TAXI-ING! AIRPLANES! EXPLOSIONS! *AIRPORT* by Arthur Hailey, the guy who wrote the plot sans jokes to *Airplane!* so, if you loved that banal plot about a shellshocked war vet having to take control of an airplane after the crew become too ill to fly so that a little girl can get a heart transplant in Chicago, despite his PTSD about flying, you'll probably enjoy *Airport,* maybe? It's a novel!

What Leslie Nielsen did so well is called deadpan humor. 😐 He had always been known as a dramatic actor in his youth, but his career and serious demeanor found new life playing deadpan in movies like this and the _Naked Gun_ series. Nobody does it better.

My favourite sequence is the stewardess talking into the microphone: "We hope you enjoy the flight. By the way is there anybody, who knows, how to fly a plane?", followed by pandemonium. "It's an entirely different kind of flying, all together" "It's an entirely different kind of flying"

Fun fact about Leslie Nielsen, he was a dramatic actor before this movie. The Zucker brothers gave him a whole new career in comedy. This was the first proper spoof movie, taking off a bunch of 70s references including a disaster movie called Airport. It was primarily goofing a movie called Strike Force One, which is the reason for all the war references. I grew up on this movie and Police Squad, which spoke to my love of goofy humour

Check out “Zero Hour” from 1957. That was the actual movie they were spoofing, although it worked as a spoof for the ones in the 70s too. Some of the dialogue matches word for word (I always thought that maybe they used that movie because it was public domain lol) 😂

When this was made, most of the older actors weren’t getting many roles anymore. For most of them, this was their first comedy role. Barbara Billingsley (jive lady) was Mrs Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver.

What’s amazing is that this movie, as funny as it is, is even funnier than most people think, because there are several that are cultural references from the time. Just a few examples… the old lady speaking jive is Barbara Billingsley, most famous for her role as the perfect little happy homemaker in the 1960s TV show Leave It To Beaver; the woman with the inner monologue is a spoof on a coffee commercial from the time; religious folks proselytizing in airports used to be a thing; so we’re Tupperware Parties; most of the main male characters were exclusively serious actors, which gave this spoof a real edge (even Neilsen was a serious actor at the time… though he became more famous for his comedic work, this was his first comedy); the guy checking under the hood of the airplane is JJ Walker, famous from the 1970s TV sitcom Good Times. And that’s only about half of the “dated” references. There are also just some funny things they did which they audience wouldn’t even know about - I guess the director/producer just got a kick out of it, I dunno… like the two airport announcers arguing back and forth about the red zone and the white zone; those were ACTUAL airport PA announcers in real life (at LAX), *and* they were actually a married couple. Think of how funny this movie already was, without knowing any of the references I just mentioned. And some people miss even more references than this. I’ve seen some viewers who don’t know who Kareem is, or they don’t know Saturday Night Fever, or they don’t realize that smoking on planes used to be illegal (so the smoking ticket joke falls flat with them). And a lot of folks have never heard of a microwave referred to as a radar range… so, when the guy is asked to check the radar range and he open a microwave, lots of viewers are probably just reacting with, “huh?” Think of how funny this movie is. Then consider all of the missed jokes possible for modern viewers (I’m old, hehehe). This is probably one of the funniest movies ever.

This film has been rated to have the most laughs per minute. It’s a comedic remake of an original movie from 1957 called ZERO HOUR - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bl7ZY3V-g6eJedU BTW, the producers bought the rights to ZERO HOUR just to avoid being sued. References: Opening plane in clouds mimicking the movie JAWS. Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home (coffee commercial spoof) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3uXnHZ8Z5eCaNlh same actress in real coffee commercial Boy/Girl Coffee Scene: The Original and the Spoof - kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3mZfIpsmrKKgKs From Here to Eternity- Beach Scene - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYXPdYGDmMSbfM0 Also: He walked out from the mirror at Captain Kramer’s house. A lot of people don’t catch that joke. A lot of people miss the jokes throughout the credits and afterwards the man in the cab says he’s going to give him another 20 minutes but that’s it. - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoHIinl6YtuJfsk

This was fun to re-watch with JL. I used to work for Bi=Lo foods and there was a woman who worked with us who ordered a coffee from the Deli/Bakery and told the woman, who she knows and worked with, that "she liked her coffee like she liked her men, hot and black." Later that day there was a rumor going around that she was having an affair with a black man. I like this movie but it's one that I can only watch once in a great while.

Stephen Stucker gave us some hilariously memorable performances of off-the wall characters in several movies, including a few episodes of Mork and Mindy. Sadly, he died of aids in 1986, only 38 years old. He also ad-libbed all of his lines in this movie.

11:19 - Cuttin' loose with the moves! LMAO!!! One of the BEST comedies ever made! The sounds of propeller engines when seeing the jet always gets me... "Get into "CRASH" positions", the line of people waiting to "help" the panicking woman by beating the crap out of her, "Excuse me stewardess, I speak Jive", the in-flight movies are a series of plane crashes, unplugging the runway lights - "just kidding", "Where did you get that dress?! It's AWFUL and, those shoes GEEEEZ!"... I was in PAIN from laughing so hard after watching this the first time - Instant classic!!! LOL!!! "Jim never vomits at home" is a reference to a popular TV commercial at the time...

Your reactions are hilarious!!! Best part is when you go "Shut the f*** up..." -.. And yes Leslie Neilsen [[R.I.P.]] was the king of deadpan comedy!! Also about your two question: the old lady speaking Jive is Barbara Billingsly, the mom on Leave it to Beaver a really old show. Gerald Ford is one of the most useless presidents ever, elected after Nixon resigned. Oh and those two guys are playing Atari's version of basketball . This is my all time favorite film!!! Thanks for doing a reaction to it, much respect.
