Absolute goldmine of information and skill on display here. I work in corporate aviation and in the process of building an aluminum body roadster at home, please keep on sharing your knowledge because sheet metal skills are almost considered black magic on our airport, very few guys have experience like this. Not to mention very engaging presentation style, I was glued to the screen the entire time.

I have no intention to get into airplanes, but I've always wanted to try my hand at riveting. Not only do I appreciate the information and demonstration, but telling us where to go to get tools, what tools/accessories to get, etc, is even more valuable.

As an IA 40 years ago I inspected a very good looking MOONEY with a hardware store material wing repair. The insurance company replaced the wing with a factory new wing. I replaced the rear spar in another MOONEY. I worked on BEECH 99s. I rebuilt many control surfaces that were magnesium. They were brittle. There were no ribs. Just doublers glued to the skin. Cherry locks to the spar and squeezed on the trailing edge. It took a lot of planning to keep the trailing edge not to look like a dog's hind leg. As a new A&P I dropped the FBO next door 2 foot square rivet assortment box. I spent my weekend sorting it out. It helped that in A&P school we had to pick the correct rivet out of a big bin of types, lengths, and sizes.

I used to build aluminum boats and the biggest differences were we exclusively used the 9X size rivet guns and we roughed up the face of the bucking bars. It's been a lot of years since then but I remembered almost everything you talked about. I already down loaded that manual. Thanks for mentioning it.

Extremely informative presentation! Could you please comment: People generally say that a higher speed drill in metal is better. Higher like 4000 rpm. Although I have such equipment with an air compressor it is a pain in the butt unless you are sitting at a table with the work piece in front of you. Metabo makes a expensive cordless drill with this speed. Is the higher speed really worth it at the end of the day? Thank you!
@williamtromblay67952 ай бұрын
Hi, Speed is relative to what you are drilling and drill bit size. In aluminum sheet metal when drilling holes by hand, speed is your friend. You want to minimize your time while drilling the hole as it lowers the chance of wandering around and egging out the hole. In steel or with larger drill bits you would drill with a slower RPM. In the aluminum higher RPM, (1500+) is just fine. Most battery drills spin at 500 or less and that is what I was trying to reference. Let me know if this helps with your question and thanks for watching. B

Great overview of aircraft riveting. I like your goose neck guns. I always thought that they would be easier on the wrist when shooting rivets all day. A great book for someone that want to do a deep dive into riveting is aircraft riveting by Nasita. Have you used the buckeye corner gun?
@williamtromblay67952 ай бұрын
Hi, I haven’t had a job yet for the buckeye, but it is right next to my gooseneck guns in the drawer 😊

airplane rivets expand and put the metal around the hole into compression, so the hole does not act as a stress concentrator causing it to be weaker or contributing metal fatique.

What is the “C” shaped yoke that is attached to your C/P planishing hammer? Purpose ? Larry Struck 0:00 0:00
@williamtromblay67952 ай бұрын
Hi, the “C” shaped yoke allows you to get into small areas on the CP. I also have different length tool holders and move the lower arm up, to allow access. I have a lot of modifications and tooling that I have made for the CP machine, they are great for any shop.

@williamtromblay67952 ай бұрын
Hi, I have two DOTCO drills. The smaller 4SE model has a 1/4" chuck and the larger 9LE model has the 3/8" chuck. Both are 3200rpm.

Do you put more pressure on the gun or the bucking bar? Do you use the same pressure throughout the procedure or do you start softly to set the rivet and then ramp up to finish it?
@williamtromblay67952 ай бұрын
I use the same pressure on both sides and through the whole process. It allows the tools to do the work.
@philippboetcher99592 ай бұрын
Maybe stupid question, but what compressor and setup do you use for your rivet guns?
@williamtromblay67952 ай бұрын
Hi, Most any air compressors will work just fine. I have a 7.5hp with a 60 gallon tank but I have used my rivet gun with a compact compressor as well. The rivet process goes quick, so it doesn't drain the tank very much.
@philippboetcher99592 ай бұрын
@@williamtromblay6795 Brilliant, I had a short search online but those gooseneck rivet guns seem hard to come buy....is there any old manufacture of goosrneck rivet guns in the UK? I am a furniture maker and the selection of vintage tools is normally fantastic here, thanks for the fast reply!
@williamtromblay67952 ай бұрын
@philippboetcher9959 Hi. I don't know of English built tools. In the US, Ingersal Rand, cleco and Chicago Pneumaticand Thor built goose neck rivet guns. You will find some listed on EbayUS.
@mikemakuh5319Ай бұрын
Trouble wit Ebay you can haddly find a claw hammer by discription anymore.
@NormanCzerski2 ай бұрын
Never partially shoot an aircraft rivet, it must be shot completely else the rivet can work harden in a few seconds and can fracture when you again attempt to finish. It you haven't cleanly driven a rivet, drill it out and use another rivet. You will not be able to see fractures after a second attempt on a partially driven rivet that is driven on a second attempt. These rivets are work hardening.
@williamtromblay67952 ай бұрын
I disagree. On DD rivets you are correct, on AD and A rivets this is of little to no concern. B
