Yeah, the benefits for ANC are very minimal without a seal. Samsung tried this with the Galaxy buds live.

The only other product I know of were ANC has been included on an open earbud was the Galaxy buds live and it was a disaster. Which ones have you tried that? Airpods 3rd gen are already waterproof enough. I lost my left airpod and it was left in the street for a whole rainy night. I picked it up the next day after I found it and it sounded like nothing had ever happened. That was half a year ago and nothing has changed

Actually it makes sense for people who do not like the ear tips. The 179 USD AirPods 4 with noise cancelling and the case is basically a cheaper AirPods Pro 2. And the 129 USD one is a cheaper "upgrade" for the 179 USD AirPods 3

I can't stand any kind of ear buds that "fit" inside the ear! Always extremely uncomfortable and always end up falling out. That's why I only like over the ear headphones, but most of those suck, too.

I currently have the AirPods Pro the first gen version I believe and I would love to upgrade since I use AirPods daily but to be honest I don’t find it worth it to buy a new model of AirPods if they don’t look different in some way! The design being the exact same just makes it feel like it’s a old model. No way for others to tell either while I don’t care for that reason it certainly is a factor. I think they really need to do a design change to make it distinct as well as maybe adding some colours or something. That’s what I’m personally waiting for a visual design upgrade. That’s the only thing limiting me from buying the newer models.

I would like to see Apple try AirPods SE, with a $99 starting price and the same or very similar design to the AirPods 2, but with the new chip inside and USB-C. I think if your suggestion is correct, the higher-end AirPods 4 may have sealing eartips so active noise cancellation will actually work properly. And the next AirPods Pro may go to an all-new design by the fall of 2025.

So, no Pro 3 for now? I guess that's fine, since I've just replaced my Pro 2 lightning with Pro 2 usb-c. They're supposed to be identical, but the latter one has much better ANC. Not because the lightning version isn't capable of the same, but because Apple reduced ANC with updates. They did the same thing with Pro 1st gen, too. That's why I will be using my new ones with Android only to avoid these updates.

Hopefully the Airpods 4 don’t come with silicone tips even if the ANC isn’t all that grate, but I’m not getting my hopes up. Bought airpods pro 2 Monday, but ended up returning them because I can’t wear them for long periods of time without my ears hurting when I take them out my ears. I like the features on the airpods pro 2 case like when the speaker chimes when you charge them so you know that they’re charging and how you can check the battery on the buds and the case without the lid having to be open and the fact that you can charge the case without the buds being inside, but what is the point of having all that if you’re gonna get an ear ake after 2 hours of using them because of the silicone tips being stuffed in your ears all that time?
