I also missed the school period talk when I was 10. I got my period two years later at my friends house and was too embarrassed to say anything, so I spent the full four hours rushing to the bathroom every twenty minutes to shove more toilet paper into my underwear. When I got home I told my mum and, under the assumption that I had been present for the talk, she handed me a pad and (rather ominously) said “you know what to do”. I did not, in fact, know what to do. I saw that there was a sticky side so I figured that it must be so I could adhere the pad to myself. I then started crying because I thought I wouldn’t be able to pee. I figured it out eventually. NORMALISE TALKING ABOUT THIS STUFF WITH CHILDREN!!

My first period i was like 11 and I had such horrendous cramps I thought it was my appendix bursting so I made my dad take me to the ER (single dad no mum) because I genuinely thought I was gonna die. I got clotting and legit thought there was a parasite eating at my insides and it was all coming out. 100% fully traumatic experience will never forget.

my older sister is five years older than me. when i was some small age from probably 5-7, i guess my mom decided she wanted to "ease" me into the idea of periods. So she had my older sister come into my room and tell me, "sometimes when youre a girl, you get a red dot in your underwear!" She provided no more explanation. I was just left very confused. Thankfully, The Care and Keeping of You took over a few years later 👍

My period started the summer after 5th grade. In a swimming pool. With my friends. At a birthday party. I was wondering why the area between my hips hurt so much and if some of the food didn't agree with me, but I'm the kind of person to shake it off and don't mention it so I continued swimming. Then someone finally noticed the blood in the water... people started screaming. I was just confused as to where the blood was coming from and why the blood was more clumpy than usual, then one of my friends pointed out that it was coming from me. I looked all around me wondering where I hurt myself until I realized it was coming from my crotch at an alarmingly fast rate. I said, "Uhhh, I think I'm bleeding to death.". Here I was, looking like the spawn of Satan, blood soaking my body and swirling in a pool around me. 10 year olds screamed and ran away from this terrible demon, a birthday party turned into disaster. I was freaking out thinking I was bleeding to death from some poison in the pool, and all the 10 year olds screaming and crying around me wasn't helping. It wasn't until I got out and a parent examined me that they realized I had my first period. She assured everyone not to worry and that I had my first period. This led to my mom taking me out of the party while the rest of the adults explained to all the 10 year olds what a period was. I said goodbye to the friend who's birthday party it was and she didn't even respond, she just kept crying in her mom's arms. It was a very traumatic experience for everyone that day. It was the most embarrassing experience of my life, I was completely mortified. My favorite swimsuit was ruined, and I then had to suffer the horror of impaling myself with a mysterious device called a "tampon", but was too scared to do it so I just used a pad. Since then I've only ever used pads because the experience was so traumatizing. I didn't talk to any of my friends for 2 weeks after that, and I got the nickname "Bloody Mary". Oh, and the next period it was my time to get baptized and I had to go in the water in front of everyone. I left it with chunks of blood floating in the water. Sorry person after me! I've hardly gone in the water since

my first period started pretty late (8th grade) and my mom always educated me on periods so i expected to be ready - she told me all the signs and everything. however when it actually happened, no joke i thought the blood was literal shit and i panicked in shame. i tried washing it off but it didn’t work. i did consider that it could be my period but i expected it to be more red, not so brown, and i thought i had to have cramps to be sure; so i contemplated asking my mom or keeping it a secret. i didn’t say anything until later i found it a lot more red and figured it was blood. so then i told my mom and she helped me out :v so yeah that’s my first period story. it’s not very interesting but it sure was something

For context I had learned about the reproductive system by accident when I was 4 and I got mine a little late compared to everyone else, so I knew on at least a basic level what was gonna happen to me. So I was 12, went to the bathroom, noticed the blood, then yelled to my brother through the door to get the pads from our parents’ bedroom. So my older brother was the first person to know, that’s about the only interesting thing about my story lmao.

No, that’s a common misconception, but the majority of the material you pass during a period isn’t blood. A normal flow is only about three table spoons of blood per month total. Even if you bleed ten times as much as a normal woman, that’s not enough to affect your health. Just for reference, you can easily donate 33 tablespoons of blood without any effects. So if you suffered serious symptoms during a period, it was not due to blood loss.

my first ever period i just came home and found my underwear soiled, no biggie, just dealt with that pretty normally. my mom had told me months prior to expect it. my 2nd period is where all hell was let loose: it was the day of an important choir event, we were gonna be going out of school, it was december and it was a christian school so our choir competitions that time of year were important and intense. i noticed i was bleeding in my school bathroom, freaked out, told my friend and promptly started crying in front of her LOL. she was such a darling and so helpful, i dont remember how but eventually we made contact with my mom who asked my dad (who worked on the street parallel to our school) to get me pads and i cried all the way to the school gates with my friend and only calmed down once i had the pads in my hands. i was just freaking the hell out 😭 cuz we were supposed to leave soon and i had no idea what to do. she was there next to me laughing and patting me silently on the back lmao what a champ. i confided only in her because i was so embarrassed and confused and a crying mess and she was probably wondering why but it was just idk overwhelming??? it became our little secret we laughed about for a few years after that xD

It was Saturday, 22 September 2014 at approximately 10am. I was 11 years old and at home. I casually went to the bathroom, pulled down my shorts, then underwear and I noticed something slushy. My underwear was black so I had no idea what it was. But then I looked at my WHITE shorts. It was covered in blood. I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA DIE! I HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT WAS (we had the lesson in school, but who the hell pays attention to that?) Luckily my sister explained what is was and showed me what I had to do. She asked me if I knew how to use a pad and I was like “yeah I know”. I didn’t. It took me over a year to realize that there’s also a sticky part at the back. I cleaned up and went for MMA (mixed martial arts) like nothing was happening. I messed my pants and the bed for my first 3 nights.

To anyone who may have children in the future or knows people who may, resources like The Period Game (boardgame) and Sex Positive Families (book for parents) are helpful tools for normalizing these topics for age-appropriate levels. MINE IS KINDA SIMILAR LIKE SAME VIBE so I was not only a theatre kid but ALSO a choir kid and if anyone is in a school choir reading this you will probably have a better chance at understanding. But It was the night of my first choir concert ever 😭 earlier that day at the school, we had final rehearsals and I kinda needed to use the bathroom. BUT literally all 3 choir directors were already getting the stage setup and the whole class setup in the performing art center. So I was already going to be in trouble for not being on that stage BUT I then had to most lovely realization that I had just started my 💕period💕 AND I was about to bleed through my jeans 🤩 so I asked the MALE TEACHERS ASSISTANT if I could use the bathroom and he said no and to ask the directors. I tried to express the absolute urgency of my situation but he still didn't care. So I just went to the bathroom and realized I bled through and was SOBBING. Then the choir director came looking for me 😭 and I started crying harder bc I thought I would be in trouble. And I had to stand through the entire TWO HOUR rehearsal with a jacket tied around my waist. 😭 ANyWaYs

my first period happened when i was 12. it was the day after my mom left to go to a hospital to give birth to my little brother. everything was going fine. my dad sent me a photo of the baby and they were all healthy and okay and it was all going so well and then i woke up to see my pants soaked. i never even talked about it with my parents or teachers, the topic kinda just pops up randomly from time to time whenever i ask if i could buy that cute hello kitty pad i saw on an ad on tv and my mom telling me that it's a pad for periods, not a diaper for kids. anyway, the first thing i texted my mom after she gave birth was "i think i had my period" instead of a congratulations or an "are you okay" and i'm sure that the disappointment she felt that day was immeasurable. yeah, so that was that.

It was March 31st, 2020. I was 12 years old. After getting out of the shower, putting on a bathrobe, and drinking a red-colored drink, I looked down at my legs and noticed a red spot. I thought I had just spilled some of the drink, so I thought nothing of it, wiped it off, and went to make the worst possible decision I could’ve made that day - changing into white pants. I then hopped into the car to go to my grandma’s house to go swimming in her pool. Despite it being quarantine, she was my brother and I’s main caretaker due to my mom being an essential healthcare worker, so we were allowed to go between houses. The moment I looked down was when the real horror began. I noticed blood rapidly seeping out, and anxiously waited through the whole twenty-five minute car ride, with my grandma right beside me in the driver’s seat and my brother right behind me. The moment we arrived, I dashed off to use the bathroom, praying I didn’t leave behind a stain in my grandma’s car. I did my business and sure enough there was blood in the toilet. I began bawling and called my grandma in. She didn’t have any pads due to menopause, so she made me a makeshift one out of toilet paper and called my mom to let her know. I changed into my swim clothes, and thankfully wasn’t afraid of swimming since my grandma told me the water pressure stops the bleeding. The rest of the day was fine, my brother stayed over at my grandma’s house and my mom gave me a pad and luckily I figured out how to use it. We watched movies the rest of the evening and thankfully, all was fine. I’m so glad it happened in quarantine and not when I was in school lol

we don't talk about how it took me like, 2 or 3 days in to tell my mom bc i was too terrified to. one of those days i spent waiting i had to go to a trampoline park for a girl scouts valentines day party. i made the mistake of wearing white leggings. i also had no pads or anything. somehow, no one noticed.

my parents have only ever used books to explain these things to me (both periods and the birds and the bees) (yes, i'm not kidding, they handed me a book, said "let us know if you have any questions" and walked away) (the one about the birds and the bees had pictures) but i was also subjected to period education called "maturation" at my school when i was 10. because i was a masochist i was actually excited to get my period and thought that something was wrong when i didn't get it immediately once the 2-years-after-getting-boobs date had passed, my mom actually didn't believe me when I showed her the blood lol. she thought i had an infection. not really a crazy story but i still think it's funny.

@@bagel011 it can also be completely normal, I was the same way. I do think talking to your dr is a good idea though. I got a blood test and everything was fine, my body was just being silly and goofy
