Until Michonne told him that she only felt SAFE WITH HIM, I don't think it ever 'dawned' on Rick that Michonne NEEDED his protection. I think he counted on her strength and that's what drew him to her. She was the OPPOSITE of Lori (and Jessie) as she was not dependent on _THE HIM_ in her life. Michonne could take care of Michonne. Most of the SAVES between the two of them were HER SAVING HIM, not the other way around. For her, unlike her son's father (Mike)... she believed, Rick would do ANYTHING to protect his KIDs! Her strength 'grounded' him but also made him STRONGER; his DEVOTION made her feel SAFE TO BE a strong female. Yes we are indeed conditioned to be STRONG even when we are WEAK but there are ALPHAs among us who are _strong BECAUSE they're strong as well!_ Michonne would likely be a 'leader' no matter what her upbringing. What Rick has learned is that sometimes... *EVEN A HERO NEEDS A HERO!*

Danai Gurira wrote Episode 4, titled “What We.” As a playwright, Gurira skillfully keeps the ball in the air, exploring Rick’s psychological trauma and rekindling the love between Michonne and Rick. The setting itself becomes a character, eventually destructing-a powerful metaphor for their journey.

I just realized Rick is using the same strategy his war veteran grandfather used. Remember that story he told in the barn? “I was dead the moment I stepped into enemy territory.” His grandfather told himself, “Rest in Peace” every morning until the war ended. That’s what Rick did. He forced himself to die, so he wouldn’t fully experience the agony of loss.

I don't know how in the world they're 4 and 0 on this series! SOOOOOO GOOOOOOD! I just love that Danai didn't take the easy route in writing the process of Rick coming back. The drama of her helping him get to what it really is keeping him from his real, true self, his REVIVAL so to speak, was getting to the realization that he is still alive and not dead. He saw that phone Pic of Carl and he could see him again. He could see her. He could listen to her again. Danai's writing is really just so very good! That combined with her and Andrew's superb on screen performance, makes this a definite fave. Back to Season 7 episode 12 quality and vibes for me. BRAVO!!!

The emotional journey that Danai took us on....their acting! I can't. This whole episode was like watching a play, and Danai put her whole foot into this script. I think this is the first time we've had an actual time out on TWD, where we just got two characters talking, basically for a whole episode, and really got to dive into their emotional states. It was just chef's kiss, and I loved every second of watching you react to it!

The words 'emotional rollercoaster" have NEVER been more appropriate! This episode took us through everything from anger to bargaining to resignation to fear and ultimately love. And I LOVE the observation that it was written like a play with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd act. So much so that they spent most of the episode in a single setting....that apartment/room. I have so much to comment on but nobody's here to read a novel. LOL! What I will say is that moment of "panic" from Rick when they were making love seemed to also be the culmination of his deepest desire...being with Michonne again and of his biggest fear...losing her again. It was a manifestation of all the trauma he's been thru and has been holding onto this entire time...coming to the surface. It was an incredibly powerful and vulnerable moment.
