The car one is ridiculous. How do you have so little control over your 15 year old kid? You're gonna pay for an auto locksmith because you're 15 year old won't give you the keys? That's just insane. Does this girl have zero consequences for any of her behaviour?
@Rhyainn
@Rhyainn 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, what the heck? The fact that the daughter isn’t allowed a smart phone and only has a flip phone indicates that there were already behavioral issues (unless the smart phone was taken away as punishment for the car thing). I’m not a parent, but it seems obvious that the daughter is not at all ready for the freedom and responsibility of a car or driver’s license in the first place. Sell the car, postpone getting the license. Don’t be mean, but show her there are real consequences to such a complete lack of trust and respect between parent and child. The absolute absurdity of ignoring your child’s actual behavior and continuing to act baffled because you “raised her like you were raised” is just so bizarre.

Also, they can very easily take away the laptop and let her use it only for school stuff when they're around. So many things they can do. Tho really they just need to talk to her.

As someone who learned on my sisters suzuki but the day of the test had to drive my mom’s Infiniti with insanely more pickup and much better brakes… there definitely is some discomfort switching cars. But that’s all the more reason to get comfortable driving different cars. Just don’t do it the day of the license test. Yes, I failed because I gave it slightly too much gas and then calibrated.. the car didn’t even lurch, but the guy testing me force ended the test before I could even get to the test area because he was uncomfortable. It was humiliating. I just went to another DMV the next day and passed perfectly, but it still sucked to go through that.

I don’t understand NL’s stance on the last one. He has built a recurring opinion on React Court that when you are married you become a single unit and you both share both responsibilities and benefits as a single body. Almost every time there is marriage drama he insists upon this point… but now he is saying the lady is an asshole for expecting her husband to share his assets with both of their children? Like why does “blood” dictate wether that child should or shouldn’t receive inheritance? They are married, they became a family unit, and their daughters are part of the family unit. It should be a pretty clear cut case, no? Both daughters are entitled to the inheritance, just like his adoptive daughter is entitled to his current parental support. That’s what being a married parent is about. This is the first time I’ve disagreed with him in a react court. I’m just confused about his position here.

I’m not saying that the first story was true, but it sounds entirely plausible as something that would happen in my house. My dad is great, don’t get me wrong, but he grew up as the baby of the family and the only boy with parents who saw him as the golden child, so his default is to think of himself, his comfort, and his wants first. Not with major things, but lots of little things, like not being all that careful with our belongings but being super finicky about other people using or even being near his things (ie eats in my moms car, has a no-food rule in his car) and those kinds of things. He doesn’t respond well to criticism, so instead we do some light ribbing. As a family we are not afraid to laugh at ourselves and each other, so he is usually a pretty good sport about it. The difference between my dad and OP’s dad is that mine is at least somewhat self aware and can concede that we sometimes have a good point and will try to do better. So yeah the story might not be true, but sometimes my mom or I will maybe come into the room when he’s watching something, purposefully 5 minutes before it’s over, and pretend to be him ushering himself out of his spot on the couch and saying “I’m gonna sit down and watch some tennis, so if you could please take this somewhere else, that would be great.” And we all laugh about it and he says something like “you got me. That’s fair” so I can totally believe that situation of pretending to be the dad happening.

I actually super disagree with Egg about the Daughter/Stepdaughter situation. It is important that they discovered and discuss it now because it shows they have a fundamental different view on how he views his daughter v his step daughter. Why wait to discover that until they are on their deathbed? Also millions of people die to things way before old age so it's silly to think the only way either one of them could possibly die is old age. Holy shit what if they get in a car accident and the result is one daughter has a mother to turn to, a home to live in, a fortune to spend and the other daughter has jack shit, no family, and now realizes her mother and the stepfather (according to OP, the only father she ever knew) made zero plans to contribute to her future wellbeing. That's something that should be discovered and discussed NOW, not in 30 years.

That inherited house is 100% not something that needs to be handled now. They've still got 30-40+ years to live and their daughters are not even adults; the parents don't know how they'll be doing financially when they're old, and don't know how the daughters will be doing when they're full adults, or whether they'll even have a good relationship as adult siblings. If anything this is something to discuss when they're both adults, so they can voice their opinions.
@robertm4880
@robertm4880 2 жыл бұрын
There's no reason not to deal with the house now, it's just good policy. It's part of having a will, and just like having life insurance. The responsible thing to do is to sort those out ahead of time in case something happens to you. It's just another monetary asset that should be split equitably between the children that they both have been raising for nine tenths of those kid's lives. And to so obviously favour one of your children over the other (which if he doesn't consider his wife's kid his kid makes him a bigger asshole seeing how long he's been her life) will only create rifts in the family situation which shouldn't be present, and inheritance is already one of the primary ways to break up previously amicable families. It's irresponsible to leave it in the wind.
@cartoonhanks1708
@cartoonhanks1708 2 жыл бұрын
As chill as NL is, it is a perfectly reasonable thing to get upset at your husband who raised your daughter to be excluded from an asset. The step father didn't say 'I don't think she should have the house because she might not be interested." he said "She's not my real daughter so she's not entitled to MY HOUSE, from MY FAMILY.' Which is just disrespectful on multiple levels. And then he implied he wasn't even going to give his step daughter equal assets until after the wife talked about it and then and only then he said he could only make it "as equal as possible" and given the fact that he said that he didn't want to give his step daughter this asset implied that he wasn't going to give her any of his assets beforehand. And the wife made a good point, his biological daughter get's all of his assets, plus his wife's, plus his grandparents, and her grandparents, and his stepdaughter only get's the wife's, which is just completely unfair and he admitted that (implying that he never intended to give her any of his will.) which is why he said he had to make it "as fair as possible". That was my understanding from reading it 5 or 6 times. I think NL just got caught up in the minutia of reading into the first part of the post meanwhile ignoring everything else in the post. The father figure basically said he wasn't going to give his stepdaughter who he adopted due to her being his wife's daughter from another marriage any assets of his because she wasn't his 'real' daughter even though he has been the only man to raise her. Disregarding the financial aspects of that, that alone is good enough to divorce someone nonetheless leave the house for a few days. Imagine if you have a stepdad and he was the only man to raise you and you loved and cherished him, and then your dad dies and you learn that you weren't included in his will because he thought you weren't his real son. That shit would be utterly devastating.

the last one: the husband's father just freakin' died and his decision that the house would only go to their bio-daughter probably stems from thinking that's what dead grandpa would want. Or he could just be an asshole and not want to share with this other daughter he raised for 13 years but technically wasn't the sperm donor for. Either way. I can see why mother is upset, I don't think she sucks. For her it's not about the money, it's about finding out your husband of many many years doesn't consider himself to be her dad despite raising her. May not be where Dad is coming from at all but it's hard to see it any other way when he just drops that casually in conversation.

I am losing my mind at the last post about the house inheritance. The post is so ambiguous, it sounds like the poster is being disingenuous. It doesn't make any sense. To me it sounds like the poster wanted to do home renovations on their new house, the spouse didn't want to, and then the poster deflected from how badly they wanted to play HGTV host by saying the renovations would be for the kids' inheritance. Which is already kind of an insane statement. The spouse was very reasonable considering the poster suddenly sprang, "Well what if we both DIED SUDDENLY?" out of nowhere. And using your kids in an argument like that is a big jerk move IMO.

So each car is familiar but the way it drives differs. But that is an extreme example. Note his truck is the same model just newer.

for the last one, I didnt really think that the parents would give the same value or the house to the mothers daughter because then they as a couple would be giving a lot more to the one daughter because their money wouldntve been split. the house wouldn't be going from the parents to the one child in a spiritual sense, it would be going from the grandfather, to his son to his daughter. Items like a house normally don't go to step grandchildren and that seems to be what the husband is thinking. Making it even doesn't mean making it 500k on both sides, more making it so that neither are screwed. And to the people thinking that the mother would be kicked out on the curb after the husband dies are dumb, its going to be right of survivorship for the parents and then go to the fathers bio daughter after they both die(almost assuredly because that's really the only thing that makes any sense, no husband is going to kick their wife out on their curb after they die). the bio daughter will get the better deal because her grandfather passed along a ton of stuff down their blood line. Just like how I'm probably not going to get anything from my step grandad and how I didn't get anything from my step grandmother even though they have both known me for my whole life, I'm not blood and ill get stuff from my bio grandparents(if they so choose).

I would argue for the last one that the father being an asshole has nothing to do with the actual money involved. He has raised this child since before she could remember him, in every possible sense of the word he is her father. However, his opinion as presented in the post shows that on some level, he does not consider her his daughter (Not my legal child) to the same degree he considers his biological daughter, which is a crazy take. I come from a family very similar to this, and if my step-father (who has raised me my whole life and his my father in every sense except biologically) said something like this about me and my brother, I don't know how I would recover from the emotional impact of knowing he did not view me as his son to the same degree he does my brother. Therefore I would say that this has to be, at minimum, ESH

The extent to which he does this would be what I would use to judge if he was an asshole or not. Has he shown favouritism continuously throughout the raising of these kids? Cause that would be unacceptable. But choosing to leave the house to his biological daughter, while vowing to make even as much as possible the remaining inheritance does not seem egregious to me. The reality is that the money this couple will save over the next 30 years by not having to pay a mortgage will leave them with plenty of assets to divide between their two kids, and thus the step daughter will indirectly benefit from this inheritance regardless.

The most probable outcome of the house inheritance one is that the husband will die first because statistics show ladies are more likely to live longer in general, whatever is written in the will regarding the kids is going to be overturned as all assets default to the wife's ownership which holds major precedent in law if any contention over the assets is brought up. At which point, the wife is going to divide what are now HER sole assets between the kids however she pleases. The funny shit about this one is that a will is not this mythical concrete universe binding thing. The two children are so young at the time this couple are writing this out that if they both die, the house is going to be given to whoever is closest AND CAPABLE on husband's side with a _fuck_ load of time for the power of the will to decay as circumstances change until the children are old enough to actually inherent it however they were supposed to according to the paper. If no one is capable it just gets reclaimed by the all mighty overlords which own everything including your own ass. Me NOT being a lawyer myself, it only seems like a true *mess* if you consider all the options that are _possible_ instead of the ones which are _likely._
@BrownEyedPrincess1
@BrownEyedPrincess1 Жыл бұрын
Very unlikely. Inheritances in US are not common property (i.e. wife has no stake in that no matter how long they are married). Assuming they do their will with an attorney, the husband will stipulate that is only to be given to his daughter and some legal jargon to avoid probate. There will be a trust set up automatically if there are finances involved because they need to ensure the money can be tracked in case of financial impropriety. If daughter is not 18 when the house is willed to her, it will be held in a trust with her as the survivor trustee and the closest living relative as the temporary trustee. The laws make it illegal to sell or make any significant changes to the property until the survivor trustee (daughter) is 18. At which point the temporary trustee loses all ties to the home and the daughter becomes the sole trustee and owner of the property. Source: I just worked on a refinance for a property under similar circumstances wherein the granddaughter was the survivor trustee (age 16) and her dad was the temporary trustee.

I have come to conclusion that the parents in the car post with the daughter are just really not that intelligent of people, and not particularly well suited for this whole 'parenting' thing. Their daughter starts misbehaving and it completely stunlocks them. I also think that people (NL included) were getting way to hung up about the house part of the post with the dad and his daughters. What the family actually does with the house is irrelevant. The issue is that the dad clearly views his step daughter differently than his bio daughter. The step daughter should be just as much of his daughter that he loves and raised as much as the bio daughter, but he is clearly making blood relation a factor in his decision making, and that is something to be concerned about. Like, imagine if the parents had adopted the daughter and then he went "Sorry, you're not blood related to me, so our *real* daughter gets all the family heirlooms"

I actually found it super frustrating that NL overlooked that the issue with the house wasn’t about economics or the grandfather or anything like that. It was about the mother being mad at the FATHER of the two girls, because he was suggesting not treating his two DAUGHTERS equally. He was intending to give one child an entire home(basically setting them up in life, a home is both a major expense in life and a valuable asset), and leaving the other daughter no equality in HIS house. Agree with the dad or not, it’s not up for debate if he’s clearly favoring his daughter he had with his ex, over his other daughter. It’s not his “family’s" house or grandfathers house, it’s his, and it’s very unfair for him to treat his two daughters as if they aren’t equals to him(in that he only sees one of them as worthy of giving an entire home). You can say the dad is based or cringe that’s up for debate, but from how it’s explain in the post, it’s seems like it’s coming out of right field for him to suddenly be treating his two DAUGHTERS differently and picking favorites. Imo the father should leave it to either the mother(his wife), and his two daughters behind her should she pass first, just seems fair assuming they are one family unit 🤷, but that’s just me. I just wish NL even got into the real issue rather than getting stun locked on the economics and judging the mother for looking out for the interests of BOTH her daughter in proposing they should have equal equality in what is to be their family home
