Culturally, it's like we are allergic the to idea of celebrating someone else's financial success - to our own detriment. More of us need to be discussing our financial health and goals openly. No one person's situation will mirror another's. So we need to exercise our emotional muscles to be HAPPY for each other. Plus, YOU ADVOCATE FOR DONATING TO OTHER CAUSES! What is there not to celebrate in that? Because you are debt free, you can give more charitably. That is worth celebrating.

We are so comfortable celebrating birthdays, pregnancies - but not financial success? Time to change that.
@ambition12244 жыл бұрын
@@AjaDang I think it's because people feel as though their lack of financial success is because they are LESS THAN. So when others like yourself are doing SO WELL, it's like "dang, I'm a failure", and that feeling of insuffiiency makes them lash out in a negative way. While as with birthdays...EVERYONE "gets one". Hope that makes sense. Still not an excuse to be rude.

I was unemployed for a year when I made a move across several states to be with my fiancé. I racked up more than $14,000 in debt just trying to live ($550 in truck payment/insurance and $600 a month for Cobra insurance). A few months ago, I finally began following the Budget Mom's system strictly (I had tried several times before and given up). I'm finally IN IT TO WIN IT, and I'm down to $11,500 since the beginning of May. Chopping away at it slowly but surely. My husband doesn't understand, so sometimes it's hard to feel excited about the small wins. I'm glad I found your channel.

Also this channel inspired me to start my own finance video, because I feel like people only talk about their debt after the fact, and not during school. I currently only have 44 subscribers but I LOVE making videos, and can't wait to keep making more.

Thank you for sharing your debt free journey. This year so far I’ve paid off $35k in student loans. It definitely takes a lot of emotional strength to keep going. I still have another $150k to go, but being able to pay off the second loan was very freeing. I’m lucky that my loans are in forbearance right now, so I’m taking advantage of it and using almost all my money to pay off one loan at a time. It takes a lot of focus which I didn’t see coming. What keeps me motivated is to just pay $100 at a time from my reselling online and it’s working. My goal is to try and pay off another 10k by the end of the year.

Having community is a game and life saver and the online YT community is great. Unless it’s your significant other or confidant, no one wants to hear your money problems/debt free journey regularly. Your decisions get critiqued a lot and that can turn relationships sour. So, support and being supported by others who are doing what you are doing (aka becoming debt free) makes you feel less crazy and adds confidence that you can actually do it.

Great video. I am sharing because people I know don't want to hear it from me. I also followed a modified Dave Ramsey Baby Steps. Every journey is different. It was hard but reminding myself that the sacrifices were temporary was powerful. Also, it created great habits to stay debt free. It doesn't end there because now you have the opportunity to spend/save your money wisely because you worked so hard to get where you are. I love being debt free and now instead of being in the negative I finally have a net worth. I am very proud.

I will be paying off my last credit card this month. I was in $36,000 credit card debt I can’t believe it. So much interest was eating me alive. But not anymore. Now on to my student loans I’m actually excited to start paying them. They’ve been with me for years like Dave Ramsey says it’s time to give Sallie May her “eviction notice” Aja you have really encouraged me to keep going thank you so freaking much. Not sure if you will see this comment but thank you sis. Lol much love so happy for you for tackling your debt.

As of beginning of July 2020. I paid off all my debt that I had entirely. I’ve been working on that for the last year or so. It still feels a bit off because I don’t think the feeling has settled in yet. Did it take some time to get used to being done with your debt? Idk, maybe it’s quarantine that has messed it up for me a bit.

Hey Aja! I've been following for years now and I just want to say keep up the good work. You inspire me as a creative, money conscious, animal loving, Asian woman. As a Chinese girl in my twenties I think that's so important to embrace our Asian culture. I will watch every one of your new videos and listen to all your podcast episodes. In your recent episode With Shana, I was really disappointed in the misinformation regarding COVID. As a doctor to be I would expect such a fantastic platform to be more careful with the information you share. I am commenting here because I want you to know I will continue to support your work, but I hope you can deeply evaluate your podcast guests before you broadcast the episodes. I have the utmost respect for you but I hope you be careful with the people you invite. You've been doing so well on all these platforms and I hope your work can continue to be positive, scientific-evidence based, and heartwarming (every video always makes my day). Thank you and sending lots of good luck. Stay safe! Xx

Your awesome. Keep it coming. I started my debt free journey and I dont know why I was surprised but wow your right so much negative blows. One person harped on FICO score and how great her 800 score was but FICO score is not a measurement of sucess just means you have huge debt. FICO is the way America keeps you in debt which explains why your score goes down when you pay off debt. You'd think it be a plus but it hurts your rating. One person told me " I just dont know how anyone can live without debt." It is possible, i say. Thank you for your videos. Inspired.

i finished undergrad and now im in grad school so I still have time to pay off my student debt. It postponed when I have to pay everything off and that has helped me instrumentally. Of course, this is not the way to avoid paying it off but it definitely gives me more time!
@SarahMele4 жыл бұрын
Hey, not to be negative, but it also means *more* debt potentially. I think you could definitely benefit from having a plan now, and begin paying off what you can now. For federally backed loans, debt repayed within 120 days of *each* individual disbursement (each semester) is like you never borrowed it (interest paid returned back to you, etc.), and even random one-off payments during school will significantly reduce the total interest you’ll pay on the life of the loan! Just a thought to plant in your mind!
@SamElle4 жыл бұрын
@@SarahMele Oh you totally make a great point! Yea I'm going to continuously try to work on repaying it piece by piece as I go through graduate school because I can't imagine the amount of headaches I'll get from the debt once I'm officially out of school for good.

I’m so glad KZbin suggested your channel to me a second time because your budget content suited my life then! Re: your budget priorities are your own, maintaining your health on your financial journey, customizing your budget and savings to your situation, and the bird to naysayers; Amen! Amen! My husband of 9 mos and I have had to do just that. He’s more of the breadwinner so he’s handling paying off our joint debt as I focus on building our savings fund (and my personal sinking funds) in the meantime w my part time hustle (I’m an independent contractor too)! Thankfully I’ve resplit my work week and my part time gig is picking up again! I know it’s a long road, esp w us looking at houses to purchase, but I’m already feeling more security and financial freedom having 1 mo of our 6 mos emergency fund almost paid off. Like you, a 1K beginning ER Fund doesn’t jive w me, esp w 2 dogs, a husband who works in a sometimes financially volatile environment, and me being an independent contractor. I’m excited each week I transfer money to savings. To security and freedom!

I've realized that sometimes people forget that, even if you are making $100,000 a year, that doesn't mean that you have $100,000 to spend in a month, so expecting someone with a higher income than you to just be debt free right away isn't realistic! Its so easy to say what you don't like about what someone else is doing, but actually taking the steps in your own life to change your own personal situation is so much harder, and the people who are bringing down other people often aren't even doing the things they expect others to do.

I started paying off student loan debt this year. I moved 16K from savings and paid off 5 loans!! Then covid hit and I stopped diverting money from pay periods so I could save more. 130k left 😣 and idkkk when I’ll start my debt repayment plan again. I’m frustrated that I had a plan and momentum but had to pause it. Hopefully soon I can put the money I’m saving in the meantime towards my loans!!!!

Nancy I was in the same boat. Started my debt free journey in Feb, paid about $3k then had to pause to build a bigger savings. I accomplished bare minimum 3 months of expenses saved and I am moving back to paying off debt while still putting money in savings. It's so discouraging to pause but I set up my emergency fund as a "debt" so I could continue with gazelle intensity of funding it. Good luck!!!
