The problem with Microsoft and Google is that they don’t want to invest time and money to properly nurture their gaming talent. They want instant gratification. It took Sony and Nintendo decades to get to where they are. This version of Microsoft thinks it can buy its way into success.
@thecasualsperspective4 ай бұрын
They just want to buy the ideas of these studios and throw away the people who made them, then give these studio IPs to more proven dev teams. They wanted Arkane's IPs and probably had to make the owner of Arkane believe they weren't going to just get sacked upon acquisition so they signed up for 1 game then sacked the studio like they always planned on. Microsoft and Sony are in a race to see who can own the most big name IPs so they can pivot to just selling the ability to use these IPs to other studios to develop games and then charge them to publish the game globally. They dont want to make the games profitable... but if they are that's beneficial to them. They have larger goals though as being publishers because selling hardware is a thing of the past when streaming services are getting better and better and better. In the near future everyone will be gaming on something like a Raspberry Pi with steamOS or something, with a 5G SIM in their game console that fits in our pocket. Xbox and Sony know this and don't want to hinge their future on hardware sales anymore.

It's not that big a deal as many are making out. Plus, at the end of the day, in the last 15 years they've made Evil Within 1&2, which are decent, but not massive sellers...Ghostwire Tokyo, that went straight on gamepass, thus did not do massive sales numbers...and has subsequently been given away free twice, once on Prime and once on EGS so you would presume sale for that are now done. And Hi-Fi Rush being a recent surprise, but, as mentioned...as far as anyone knows Shinji Mikami had already probably decided to leave anyway by the time that came out. Arkane Austin...Unless they've done support work for Lyon...all they produced in 6 years was a massive turkey of a failure in Redfall...and pretty sure most of the people involved with Prey have long, long gone. (70% of devs that worked on Prey had left by the time Redfall came out). So they were pretty much dead. Roundhouse Games - A name change from their previous moniker that brought the stunningly terrible 'The Quiet Man' to the world...and literally nothing else of value either. Alpha Dog - literally done next to nothing except some free to play mobile trash nobody has ever heard of...or played. None of these are surprising closures.

Microsoft's problems are, at the core, two-fold. The first is that they are a product and service corporation, not entertainment. They make products like Windows and Excel that are all about function and usefulness, not fun and entertainment. Until they made the original Xbox, MS had virtually zero entertainment experience. Meanwhile, Sony has decades of experience in the entertainment sector, with music and movie divisions. Nintendo has _always_ been entertainment focused since their founding as a hanafuda making companyin the late 1800s; hanafuda is a Japanese card game. The overall CEOs of both Japanese companies know and understand that in order to make good games that make them money, they need to hire division VPs and managers that are entertainment focused and experienced. Yes, both will occasionally overstep, but eventually they backtrack and return to their 'lane'. Their investors know that you can't expect the returns for entertainment that you get with say cars or other products. It's much more feast-to-famine than product-focused investments. Microsoft's second core issue is that they have the institutional mindset of 'if you can't beat them, buy them'. This goes all the way back to its founding; there's a reason MS lost anti-trust lawsuits. That mindset still influences them today. There was no real reason to buy Zenimax except to make those IPs Microsoft exclusives (that went well with Starfield, didn't it?). Then just a few years later, they buy ActiBlizz. Now they have _at least_ a $70 *billion* dollar hole in their finances; it's actually probably way more than that, since I think that figure is based on just their ActiBlizz acquisition. A spin-off issue to one is putting so many of their eggs in Game Pass (remember what I said about services being a major focus?). Game Pass has plateaued and isn't growing nearly as fast as MS _needs it to grow_ so even that is hurting them. MS Xbox division overestimated its game sales and vastly overestimated and overutilized Game Pass. Xbox Games aren't doing the sales numbers they need because Game Pass is eating them, but Game Pass itself isn't growing fast enough.

You know, about the Warhammer figures: I'm not into that, but as far as I can find, they can cost from like 30-60 USD per basic figure?... - Recently, I suddenly got into model-building in terms of plastic kits for cars, the smaller to medium scale, basically a Warhammer mini figure would almost fit inside it, that kind of size. - But anyway, I was worried that perhaps over the last few years it would be another hobby that got cost-inflated due to the pandemic or whatever. But I was happy to see that it doesn't seem to be the case. I pulled an old kit from my childhood (that is the mid-90s) from storage and the price sticker shows that it would've been like... I don't know, 15-20 USD. Then I hesitantly looked up the prices in shops today and... it's actually not much different and you can have kits for anywhere between 20 and 50 USD (mostly at like 25-35) as well, but that's not a tiny figure and rather a whole kit of around 100 pieces. - So, yea, that Warhammer-franchise is ripping you off hard. - Also, I get that it's for boardgames and whatnot, but come on, it's unreasonable. I'd much rather recommend just building models if you're gonna paint figures. Or... I don't know, play boardgames without needing the figures or at least other franchises like Joe recommended (before they blow up as well).

I still cannot believe the way Tango was treated. What a shitshow, truly. If you do not assure your dev studios of their safety, why would they even work for you? If you're going to get shut down even if you do well, what's the point of even developing games for these companies/publishers? There's no trust, there's no respect, not even a guarantee that these hardworking, talented people will even get to keep their jobs even if they release a successful game, let alone a bonus, or increase in pay. At this point, I can't decide which company is worse. It's like they're competing with each other. And they even have the shamelessness to ask their devs to make more games like HI-FI, right after shutting down the studio that made one. That is just something else, man. I was speechless after reading that.

Imagine how boring the next gen Xbox games will be if devs are now too scared to take any creative risks with new IP. Tango won awards & were profitable with an awesome new IP & they still got shut down! The irony is that chasing live service commercial trends is what resulted in the Redfall disaster. Crippling creativity is really going to backfire on Microsoft in the long term

Capcom could make a Resident evil using raccon city as a sand box where events triggers using the lore of the game with dates and stuff... you can do whatever the fuck you want, but there is a canon ending. you can follow leon, leon can die, you can follow jill but she can die, again is a sand box using the map... it would be great to see how the city becomes worst and worst over time and you participate on it.

A relevant point to this is looking inside the actual game dev cycles inside microsoft and the studios. A video by one of forza motorsports past 3d modelers details what their experience was like working for them. A big point made is how ms treats their employees like cattle, where before 18 months, many employees are shuffled around to different projects and some are let go, to keep them categorized as contractors, part time, or non permanent, to avoid all of the extra benefits they would have to give. This leaves a lot of projects with newer less experienced employees that are given way too much to do with not enough people, experienced or otherwise. At the same time, many of the employees that do stay in the company are forced to train their replacements, a process that could take weeks to months, taking away even more dev time, before their replacements have to do the same.

Just clarify - vast majority of Warhammer tournament doesn't require official GW miniature. Usually, if you can tell what's what, you can bring, conversion, 3d prints, alternative model etc. Only tournament done by GW and by some local store would require official model. But most doesn't. I am not sure, what is number in USA, but in my country is 99% tournaments (and all big ones) allows you to 3D print entire armies.

It's really interesting to see three cheerleaders of the ABK deal who were dismissive towards ANY push back in regards to it are now holding Microsoft in contempt. This very thing currently going on at Microsoft was one of the concerns the FTC addressed and a common response from you three regarding any rebuttal from the FTC was: "FTC doesn't know that the fuck they are talking about." Turns out the labor concerns of the FTC was well warranted. Results of these closures is less talent, thus less potential games in the industry and that's not exactly "consumer friendly" now, is it? Studios on the Activision/Blizzard side are in Microsoft's sights now. On another note, Hi-Fi Rush: a SHADOW-DROPPED GAMEPASS game 'not meeting sales expectations' (XBOX platform) as the reasoning behind Tango's shutdown. What the hell did they expect? What makes this excuse even more asinine is that it's the best game Microsoft has had in years and is performing well on PlayStation and is slated for a Switch (and/or Switch 2) release and it will sell well on that platform as well.
@JamesJohnson-tr1gu4 ай бұрын
The fact that they and the other cheerleaders tried to justify it by saying well Sony bought Bungie and Insomniac, as if them buying development studios is the same thing as buying major publishers was laughable at best…I guess all that mattered to the guys is the games, but as we’ve seen, MS still can’t get out of their own way, and now it’s more likely they’ll force Bethesda to start pumping out ES and FO games every other year like Madden or 2K
