It also transpired that he was abusing a number of other kids too. The police also believe that he may not have acted alone in Christopher's murder. Superb. The Hilda Murell case is quite fascinating actually - CW diehards might recall it was originally featured on Incident Desk in one of the 1984 episodes. There’s a Wikipedia page on the case. She was a high-profile anti-nuclear campaigner and there’s a theory posited that she was killed because of that.

@@gemmagreene362apparently the tale he spun was provocation. He admitted that he strangled her because she “flaunted” her affair and they had an argument. She “did her usual act” throwing things at him and kicking in the groin so he strangled her. I don’t think provocation is a good enough reason to excuse murder so hopefully we don’t have any more QCs saying sh!t like “ the law recognises that within every human being lies the fires of emotion and you can provoke a human being so far”. Maybe he felt provoked but strangling someone takes a while to kill them and he was looking right into her face when he did it so it just sounds like BS to me. If someone is “provoking” my usual response is walk away. I’m certainly not spending 4-5 mins watching that person die with my hands wrapped around their throat. That’s some next level rage with massive dose of narcissistic entitlement right there.

The Christopher Laverack case had a few twists in the tail. It was eventually solved in 2009 using a revolutionary technique which linked pollen found on a brick left with Christopher's body, and pollen in his uncle's garden. His uncle, Melvyn Read, had died before he could be brought to justice - he had been jailed for abusing other kids. Police believe though that he did not act alone and that there most likely was a local paedophile ring involved. Sadly, Christopher's body showed that he had been regularly sexually abused in the months and years leading to his death. Very worryingly, the man who was babysitting him and left him to go to the pub (Steven Hines), was later convicted himself of abusing kids. The police believe that the whole thing may have been a set up between Read, Hines and possibly others. People in the pub who saw Hines when he was there said he was acting very strangely and trying to draw attention to himself, almost like he wanted people to remember where he was at that time for an alibi.

Sick, sick men, thankfully DNA and cameras are everywhere now to catch people quicker, but it's heartbreaking for that child to have gone through that, the Crimewatch child death reconstructions had to be so carefully filmed to not upset the public..but the presenters must have had a hard time coping with details they couldn't air. Jason Swifts murder etc was so sad..and the 7 yr old Mark at the fair, that bastard Cooke..he definitely was protected lived a nice comfy long life in prison.
