I loved the rivet squeezer jaws. With my rivet gun and rivet set there is always a small chance of putting a "smiley" on the rivet or the receiver if you aren't careful. I could teach my daughter to used the rivet squeezer!

After aligning the barrel to the rear trunnion and making sure the extractor cut is in the correct position on mark the center of the barrel on the trunnion. Then I put the barrel in my lathe and line up a cutter with that mark and I go down the barrel making marks. They all come out perfect and in line quickly. Not having a lathe, you could always eyeball it as many people do.

One good whack with a hammer on the rivet usually dimples it enough, but the jaws seemed to do a good job pressing the metal in place. Keep in mind a flat build is only heat treated around the fcg, the rest is still annealed 4130. I couldn't have done it on a NDS receiver.

The Romanian and in this case Maadi front trunnions don't use neck swell in the front. Every front trunnion I know of uses neck swell in the back as you stated. I didn't attempt to dimple the holes intentionally. The rear neck swell rivets forced the receiver down on their own as they were flush with the receiver. I usually use my rivet gun or a hammer to dimple the receiver.

The bolt cutters themselves are adjustable with the bolt on the side of the handles near the jaws. Loosen the one closer to the handle and tighten the other which is closer to the jaws. If you close the handles completely, the gap between the jaws should be around .150 of an inch. Hope that helps.

I am sooo glad I found your video series. I'm picking up a Polish Underfolder tomorrow...my first kit build. It has the Nodak Spud receiver. I figured I'd go ahead and get the kit and build it sometime in the future, after I get my shop built so I'd have a press. I was really surprised and impressed with the bolt cutter rivet tool! Nice job! Now I'll be ordering the tools from Tothtool.

you can dimple a nds receiver, just takes a bit more pressure. did it on my nds for my krink build. as far as I know, flats arent heat treated period and you would want to infact heat treat all the trunion holes to keep from elongating after time from all the forces. I had to heat treat my flat build my self.

I just had to get my homebuilt AK74 sidefolder out to look. The forward most rivet can easily be access through the mag. well, and the rear most rivet can easily be done, the middle rivet will take a little careful modification. Perhaps set a small piece of steel on the head of the middle rivet since it is recessed in the rail.

I'm liking where you are going with this series. I am impressed with how well the jaws are working. I have always used the shop press method with the riveting jig. I am curious how you will press the barrel in without a press. In the best, I have used the thread rod method and it has worked quite well. You just have to constantly remove the fixture for head space when you get close.
@Duckyistrippin12 жыл бұрын
Yes. they still need to be dimpled. Most builders who use a squeezer like this will take the stock jaws and make then hold a BB that can be used to make the dimple. I finally bit the bullet and got the ak builder rivet jig. I have tried every other possible solution. Any way around it you still need a press to do the trigger guard, or a big freakin hammer :)
@ginsboy200311 жыл бұрын
Using a NDS receiver, its going to be very difficult to dimple them s the entire shell is hardened. I wouldn't worry a bit if I was unable to dimple the holes. When backing up the trunnion I am able to force the neckswell rivets to form their own dimple with my rivet gun setup.

It could, but having done a few screw builds, I'd have to say the best way is to do a rivet build. Its kinda hard to drill and tap the front trunnion with the barrel in place. I've also spent half a day trying to remove a broken tap from a rear trunnion. Rivet builds are easier. Remember the tooling you buy you can always sell to other like minded guys.

Thats hard to say. I mean, if you didn't have any tools, eventually you would need them all or you wouldn't complete the build. The front trunnion rivet squeezer jaws are great and if you are building an underfolder you could use them on it as well.

I really like your "down to earth videos". I`m about to rivet in my trunnion today or tomorrow so I don`t think you`ll see this till after I do it but just in case you do .. Did you make any gap adjustments to the jaws after installation or did you just go ahead and rivet ? Was your receiver already dimpled ? I`m trying a 1/4" ball bearing using the Toth jaws to try and dimple my receiver, was wondering if you ever tried that method ?
@ginsboy20038 жыл бұрын
+TWISTEDSTRINGS69 Sometimes it best to check the size of the rivet tail before completely squeezing it with the jaws, if they are adjusted too close, you don't want it flat. I've never used the ball bearing method you described, but it does sound like a great idea. Glad you like the videos, they are more work than people might expect.

Hey ginsboy2003, great video series! I'm doing my first build and I'm having problems with the toth tool rivet jaws. The bolts on the side plates of the new 24 inch bolt cutters from Harbor Freight are press in bolts. Unfortunately the side plates that come with the rivet Jaws are threaded and won't work with the new bolt cutters Harbor Freight now is selling. After not being able to get an answer from Toth tool's I'm now having to modify the plates that came with the bolt cutters so it will work. The new version of cutters also don't bolt spacers in the jaw's.

@ginsboy20038 жыл бұрын
Depends on which rail you use. Some rails use one rivet in the rear trunnion and they pickup the center support rivet. If the rail you use doesn't use either or you place it so it doesn't, you might be able to do it. The problem will be the lower guide rails will possibly get in the way. So basically, I'd say it will be difficult to.

The Toth tool will not countersink rivets for you. You did not explain this in your first barrel trunnion riveting video. I believe you corrected this in a later video, but that was a bit late for those who followed your first video and had countersink rivets sticking out above the surface of the receiver. That includes me. So, I got to drill out some rivets and start over. You must use appropriate tools and procedures to seat the rivet. Once it sits countersunk completely, then you can use the Toth jaws to press the rivet shank. Also, it is really stupid to try to countersink the rivet by hitting it with a hammer. It does not work, and the point is to get a factory look.

So what is the point in doing this? Seeing as how you will only get your value back if you build multiple rifles, and seeing how it is illegal to sell the ones you built unless you are a manufacturer. Of course selling maybe one or two of ones you built is fine, but obviously you can't just go out and build rifles with the intention of selling them legally. Or can you? I'm in Texas btw
