In this installment of our AK kitchen build series we use the Tothtool rear trunnion rivet tool to install the center support rivet and the rear trunnion rivets. You would also use this on the long rivet on a Yugoslavian front trunnion. Once again it was done without a 20 ton press or a rivet gun or rivet set. I love how it all worked out! Finally a set of tools that would let a guy living in an apartment build his AK.

Before installing the rails I check the ejector for being square then I use a MAPP to to heat it up red hot then keep it red hot for 1 min before quenching in water. I do the same to the right rail and fire control group holes. After the railsare welded in place I put the whole receiver in the oven for 1 hr at 500F to remove an brittleness that may have been put in the metal.

I don't know. I've install several and just took care to keep the top of the side rail aligned with the top of the receiver perfectly. I used the rear of my dial caliper to measure it and make sure it was on within .002 or so. I guess thats something I'll have to make a video of.

The shop tail in on the other side of the receiver, the flatter head is on the selector side and it doesn't interfer at all.

The receiver I made from a flat. The only part of it thats heat treated is the fire control group holes, and the inner rails. I've heard of guys trying to heat treat their entire receivers, but with out special jigs to clamp them in they warp badly. NDS receivers are all heat treated if you care to buy your own.

The easiest more expensive method is to buy modified jaws for the harbor freight spot welder and spot weld them in. I drill 5 holes in the receiver where the welds would be and rosette weld them in. My method takes longer to clean them up to make it look nice but it works.

For a Nodak, take a metal block that you can put in a vise, and put it inside the receiver to support the hole. It also, needs to have a hole in it, slightly larger than the river hole or a countersink. Use a large punch, or a old hardened lathe center create the dimple.

Watching this video made me ponder a different way to use this tool. My thought is that instead of using the bolts as the driving force to crush the rivet, use the two bolts as guide rods and use a shop press on the top bar in order to make the tail on the rivet.
@ginsboy2003

Sure you could use it that way. The thing is, the tool was made for guys who didn't have a shop press.

If you watch my AMD65 flat bending video I show how I dimple the receiver on the front trunnion for the neck swell rivets. I support the trunnion at the mag well, and drive the neck swell in place. Then I squeeze it. Works great. On the rear trunnion, you could just use a large center punch in the hole, give it a whack and it will dimple the metal. You don't want to countersink the metal by using a cutting tool.

I believe you could use the rivet squeezer that I used on the forward trunnion. You would just have to be careful not to squeeze it too much since it is longer.

So to dimple the receiver for the swell neck rivets, do you just whack it with a hammer till its flush with the receiver? Does this work with the front trunnion too? Also, is the process different with a hardened receiver that isnt dimpled yet, like a childers?

Im about to install a side mount base on my ak. My question is, how long does the rivet 'tail' need to stick out? It looks like the long rivet I have to go through the rear trunion and scope rail the rivet will stick out about 0.15" . Is that gonna be enough to form a good rivet?

Your videos are excellent. How important is it to dimple the receiver where the trunnion holes are dimpled, and how would you recommend accomplishing that with a Nodak Spud receiver? I do not have an hydraulic press.

Love your videos, I'm planning to build an RPK-74 soon for my first build. From what I understand, using this tool, it doesn't bother countersinking the holes it just forces the rivets down into the receiver? I watched a guy using the AK builder tool and he had to countersink his holes first. Just wondering if this will matter for my build as I plan to buy this tothtool tool for the job and I will be using akbuilder rivets with swellnecks that are supposed to have a countersink. Thanks!

Have you ever tried the Toth long rivet tool in a hydraulic press? I'm thinking it might be easier than working the two bolts, if the tool can handle it. Just line it up, pump pump pump, and you're done.

If your using a standard rivet set, it is important because that rivet has a shoulder and will not sit flush unless it is dimpled. Now, will you loose strength if you just use a regular rivet? It will never fail in your lifetime. It is done for extra shear strength and when the guns are fired fullauto, it gives a little extra strength. Will the holes in the receiver stretch or tear out? No. People theorize that it might, but nobody has ever seen it happen.

At one time it was a lot cheaper to build it yourself, maybe not now. I still have kits I bought 6 years ago, they are worth a ton now. People want crazy prices for their stuff. AK-builder online is out of stock of everything and gunbroker prices are really high for kits. Tally up what it will cost you to meet 922r with US parts, and look for a kit on gunbroker or akb-builder. Compare that to buying new or used guns. Expect to pay $500 for a kit on gunbroker.
