My Grandma hated this song! So my cousin and I sang it to annoy her. She got a tea towel, spun it into a ‘rope’ and whooped our arses as we ran out of her kitchen. I desperately wanted to play it at her funeral! She was tiny, crazy and fired on all 4 cylinders. Love you crazy lady! X

I was 12 when this went to number 1, and all these years later, i'm really glad it went to number 1. Truly nostalgic, more heartwarming today than back in the day, i suppose it may have something to do with that in the years since this was number one i have lost both grandma's and my mother. Maybe you had to be there in 1980 to really appreciate this song today.
@gookey992410 күн бұрын
I was there in 1980 and 12 too. But I just started showing interest in girlfriends so preferred grown up music !
@BrianParkes-qg9oj10 күн бұрын
@gookey9924 gookey9924 I suppose like me you would be about 57 years old today, I'm glad that in 1980, as a 12 year old, you were showing an interest in girls, and listening to "grown up music", just like me. When, in my text, does it mention that I rushed out and brought this record, or even that I liked it back in 1980? Go back and read my text again, because I'm only pointing out the fact that all these years later I'm glad it reached number one, if just for the nostalgia and the memory of my two dear grandma's, sadly both departed today, but both around in 1980, and of cause my dear mother, who has also died in the last few years, but thanks for replying, I think deep down, you have a soft spot for this tune, that's why you took the time to listen to it once again, and even read and reply to someone's comment. Have a great day.

Kate Bush didn't stand a chance against this! It even knocked John Lennon's "Starting Over" from the top spot, but then the rereleased "Imagine" put him back in the #1 spot. It really just reminds me of Dec 8th, 1980. I was never a huge Lennon fan, but that horrific event certainly altered Christmas that year.

We all called our Grandma 'Nana' so when this came out you can imagine the confusion. My Nana was 75 when this came out. She didn't have a record player but they did had an old gramophone with a massive horn. Anyway yeah she was amazing, very sweet, small, brightest blue eyes, neat white hair. Like a female version of my Grandad come to think of it. You'd have loved them!

how many of these little ladies are now grandmaws themselves, sitting on a rocking chair in the corner, knitting for their offspring? come on, admit it, half of them are!! /i hope they all grew up to be HAPPY AND POSITIVE in their lives. we are only here on earth for a short time and then we are born to eternity. i have a funny feeling this song has been sung and played at many, many funerals. i would be surprised if it was not. anyway, thanks for posting a lovely piece.
@MercurialRed92 жыл бұрын
These kids would be around the same age as Mariah Carey and J-Lo and younger than Kylie Minogue, Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts. So they’ll all be in their 50s now and some are definitely grandmas, but not likely the stereotyped sitting in a rocking chair knitting type (not that there’s anything wrong with that). 🤷🏽♀️
