Loving all the comments .. I am now in my mid 40's and become a granddad a few years back.. whenever I get the chance I will sit with my grand daughters on my knee and play this song and sing along to them..... Hoping one day they too will post fond memories of me .. Being a father is hard work teaching your kids right and wrong and dealing with all problems until suddenly your kids have grown up as they turn into adults...then one day all your hard work as parent is repaid you become a grandparent...and all that hard work gets repaid....... Being a granddad means you can become a kid again ... cherish your time with those you love... one day we all become someones memory...

He played that old man character so well, most people had no idea he was only in his forties when he played Cpl Jones. There are very few "novelty" records these days but there were loads of them back then... Bernard Cribbins, Benny Hill, Terry Scott, Peter Sellers/The Goons, Charlie Drake, Tommy Steele. It was a more innocent time when people didn't take themselves so seriously. What was that thing we did in those days.... oh yes, I remember... fun.

Considering this nostalgic song was number one in the charts in January 1971 is testimony to the marvellous variety of music we had in the 60s and 70s. That it resonates with so many peoples memories is a tribute to the writer of Grandad, Herbie Flowers, who was a member of the Blue Mink group. Choosing Clive Dunn to record the song must be have been a great choice. What are the chances of someone writing a number one novelty hit like this, in 2022. ! maybe the same as getting the 6 lottery numbers.
