Yeh I have hit max CPU while playing live a couple times, generally happens after 10-15 minutes. The work around is double tapping stop but you often forget to do that and you need to trigger a sound on a different device to keep audio running. If you could easily switch between projects somehow that would be great, but probably a big ask 🤷♂️

@HoochMusic2 жыл бұрын
Thanks API! Definitely very doable, I’ve gigged with it a few times now. My primary concern is CPU overload, been caught out a couple of times. This is why I trigger samples on the SP in between tracks, gives you an opportunity to double tap the stop button on the MPC which clears the CPU. If you forget to do it, you’ll get a stuttering/jumping sort of sound about 20 mins in to your set.

Amazing set man, my favorite live performance I've seen on an MPC to date. Just got the MPC One and find this very inspiring. Just curious if you ever though about using a different bank for each track in a set, or is there any reason why you think changing sequence is better? I'm still learning the workflow so I thought about using a bank for each track, but not sure if it's a good idea.
@HoochMusic2 жыл бұрын
What a compliment, thanks heaps man 👊. I think you mean a different project? At the time I made this set, ‘setlist’ mode didn’t exist. I haven’t actually updated my unit since it came out but I believe setlist mode still has a delay between changing tracks. Thats the reason I used sequences as different ‘songs’. That way I can go between pre-recorded stuff and finger drumming without any break in the audio. Setlist mode does mean that you can switch between projects faster than you were previously able to though, so you could make it work if you were triggering a filler on another device or something like that. I would definitely recommend trying to make it work with setlist mode first, as the way I did it can really smash the CPU - I’ve been caught out at a gig before when the audio starting cutting out because it was overloading. Possibly too much information in this comment haha, I hope I haven’t been too confusing. Thanks again man 🤝.
@soundofmai2 жыл бұрын
@@HoochMusic Thanks a lot for the detailed response man, definitely not too much and not confusing at all! Sorry if I didn't make myself clear, but I meant staying in the same project and pressing another bank button (eg. Bank B)...and in that bank you could have a new program, sequence etc. set up for your next track. Not sure though if this is more or less efficient than the way you are changing sequences within the same bank. I hadn't actually heard about setlist mode so thanks a lot for that info, will check it out. I saw your comment about pressing stop to relieve the cpu while playing a sample on the SP-404, so I was thinking of doing it that way, but if setlist mode works even better, that's great! By the way, I love your style of finger drumming, seems similar to the style I've been practicing so far. If you ever feel like doing a tutorial on that I'd love to see it.
@HoochMusic2 жыл бұрын
No worries man! Ahhh okay sorry, you did actually mean bank… I thought about that when I first set it up but decided not to go with it. When you change to a new sequence, the program changes too. And there were tracks that I imported into my set that I built in different projects. So, each track has it’s own program and then I can use that same program in a new project if I wanted to build the track out. If you put all of your songs in the same program but just a different bank, you’d be loading up a very big program and I’d imagine it’d get pretty messy and also drain the CPU. However, if you did use different banks you could just mute/unmute and mix stuff in a little better perhaps, that would be cool 🤷♂️. If the system can handle it, it might not be a bad place to start, although I still think you could do a better mixing job if you used the sequences and programs workflow. Regarding the finger drumming, I reckon I could do a tutorial, sure. It might not be that good though 😂 we’ll see. Thanks for the support Mai!
@soundofmai2 жыл бұрын
@@HoochMusic Thanks again for the in depth response man. I just realized that while my second track (my track not MPC) is on Bank B in the project I'm working on, I'm still using the same program and track. However, I've nothing recorded into the sequence and am just triggering samples live along with the Analog Rytm and Analog Four, so maybe cpu won't be an issue in this situation. However, I'd like to find the most efficient way going forward, so I might try setlist mode on the next project and also try the way you did it in this set in another project. Looking forward to more of your great videos!
@HoochMusic2 жыл бұрын
Ahhh okay so if you’re triggering your elektron gear via midi that should save heaps of CPU. But if you’re triggering sounds from the MPC, every sound you trigger seems to cumulatively cook the CPU in time. I’d be interested to hear how you go with your experiments and if using banks is better for you.

Cam on Chi! Yep, the SP was for FX and triggering vocal samples between tracks. They’re great for live use and for applying effects to samples. Definitely one piece of gear I’ll always have with me. The mk2 has an FX chain that allows you to run 4 different effects at once, very cool feature if that is what you’re after.
@dshishkin772 жыл бұрын
Hey, sounds pretty cool. I'm new to MPC (actually don't even own one). How do you deal with tempo of used melodic audio samples and what you play by tapping pads? For example, at 5:30 you trigger some pre-recorded sequence and it slightly fits the overall tempo. Or you play intro drum break and then trigger melodic sample and it fits the tempo again. I guess it's kinda basic MPC issue, but it's not quite clear to me :)
@HoochMusic2 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks for checking out the video. My method here was to chop the sample first, play with it until I found a melody that I liked and then I fit the tempo to the sample. I pretty much always start with the sample/melody but I’m usually using shorter chops so you can speed up/slow down as you’re playing. These samples were from packs because I was rushing to finish a set for a gig, but when I’m sampling straight from vinyl i have more control over the tempo. Having said that, you can stretch/shrink your samples to make them play faster/slower. Hope that helps mate!

Great work … Couple questions … could you not use the XY for effects as opposed to the Roland … I guess you tried and it didn’t work but I’m keen to know why ? Also why you not put the transition samples unchoked on the performance pad you were playing … did switching sequences crop it off ? Very inspiring !!
@HoochMusic2 жыл бұрын
Hey James, thanks heaps man! Great Q’s… The XY fx pad is cool, but can’t compete with an SP. The SP has multiple fx ready to go at a moment’s notice and feels like an instrument when you’re in the zone. You could absolutely chuck your transition sample on a pad on the MPC, changing sequence doesn’t choke it out. Coz I was using the SP for fx though, it made sense to have my transitions there to allow for more drums/chops on the MPC pads. Also, when I gig with a different MPC set I can use the transitions that are already on SP.
@45jimbers2 жыл бұрын
@@HoochMusic that’s what I’d guessed re the SP and you’re right of course … there is little to compete with the immediacy of the SP. And thanks for confirming on the transitions.
