This was SO helpful. I've owned this 2 weeks, called Akai and got some tech support but this helped me actually perform the update. I'm finally up and running. I look forward to learning through the rest of your catalog. Thanks

I don't use USB flash drive but i use an SD card in a usb adapter and my MPC X didn't see the image in either NTFS or exfat so just to check i tried it in the sd card slot where it worked perfectly, just so you know.

Thank you for mentioning this, of course the official documentation doesn't mention anywhere that this is possible. If it wasn't for your comment, I wouldn't even have tried this, AKAI has such bad documentation for the whole firmware update process it's ridiculous.

Does not work. I followed Akai's directions exactly. I'm stuck on the UPDATE MODE screen just like has happened to others. My MPCX is currently on 2.1. It seems the img is not recognized and the MPC just sits there on the UPDATE MODE screen waiting forever. What am I missing? Surely Akai would have tested this update method before releasing. How do you get the USB firmware update method to actually work?

I think I killed my unit. Thought the update was finished and started f'ing with it, now the screen doesn't respond and it doesn't connect to my PC. Still turns on and the physical buttons work but the screen won't respond to touch.

I followed the instructions and hit update mode but even though I put the firmware update image into the main directory of the usb drive I don't think my MPC LIVE can see it and I seem to be stuck on the page with an MPC logo and it says update mode but nothing is happening and it seems to be stuck there and I can't escape the page. What do I do? I don't want to turn the machine off in case it causes a problem

I'm having the same problem. How did you resolve it?

John the Cloud I had a ‘live chat’ with an Akai representative. He said it was safe to turn off the unit. I think when it’s in that page it is in ‘update mode’ but it hasn’t begun the process of updating so it is still safe to disengage. I think it’s only once you see the progress bar that it’s not safe to turn off the unit. Anyway I just updated via the computer as I had done previously. I never worked out why the firmware updater image was not visible to the mpc as I had placed it in the main directory of the usb stick

Thanks. I updated by the computer too. If you go to Akai's website and dig a bit you can only use the update by USB stick for firmware 2.1 onwards. Mine was 2.0.7.

I was in 2.1 but still my Mpc could not see the updater image even though it was in the main directory

I did the update by usb but the mpc x shows 2.3 but there is no plugin icon so I really didn,t get an update. also I tried first with the computer and it just stayed stuck on the update screen but would not recognize the mpc x plugin ,until I removed the usb drive for the back of my mpc x then it did the update but it did not really work even thow it said I was up to date with 2.3 software update ...... so that's when I did the usb try too but as I said either way no real luck just saying 2.3 is there but don't work so said Akia.

Having to watch a whole video just to find out where in the settings the option for firmware update is hidden is ridiculous! Also, the links in the manual for installing the software update and the firmware update are swapped! Then, why would I have to install the MPC software on my computer before pulling the file on the usb stick?? This has absolutely nothing do do with each other, if I want the software I watch the tutorial for the software update! You certainly have a lot of possible improvement for your documentation!

Yeah the Akai knowledge base article could just say "Go to the Menu, hold down shift, and click Update".

DISCLAIMER: YOU MUST ALREADY HAVE THE 2.1 FIRMWARE INSTALLED PRIOR TO UPDATING TO THE 2.2.1 FIRMWARE OR THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS MAY NOT WORK (www.akaipro.com/support/kb/articles/akai-pro-mpc-x-and-mpc-live---installing-mpc-2.2-firmware-update-via-usb - 1. UNDER "What you'll need..."). If you're jumping from 2.0.1 firmware to the 2.2.1 firmware its best to do it via MPC connected to your computer. Follow Akai's firmware update walkthrough vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/emm2aIani9t0jZI

This only works if you have firmware 2.1 or higher. Which I wish Akai had made a bit more obvious.

An neither in the manual nor on the separate update readme it's mentioned. They sure know how to keep you busy while trying to update your MPC... :/
