When my mother and I climbed to the crown in about 1948, the crown was open (no windows). I raced ahead of my mom and grabbed one of the vertical bars of the opening. I leaned out in order to read the tablet -- no mom or security to stop me --. The tablet reads July 4, 1776, per my memory. In 1956, I was the first in my High Scholl class to walk to the top of the Washington Monument. Today, at 85, I can still climb stairs, but many fewer.

Many native New Yorkers have never gone to the lady. We're proud of her of course, but maybe sometimes take her for granted. I took my daughter to it , when I took her to see my home town. But now you have to make reservations. according to what the USNPS told me, 80% of the people who go to the island only get to the island. out of that 20% only 10% or less get to go to the crown. The rest can only get to the top of the base and look up through the plexiglass to see the inside construction and the emergency elevator. So what you got to do is more rare now than in the past. This is similar to visiting the Effel Tower , where most people never get to go all the way to the top as well.
@aKnightlyStoryАй бұрын
That is absolutely true! I think also a lot of people don't know that there are crown tickets to begin with and if they do, the fact that you have to plan 3 to 6 months in advance is not always feasible for many. As far as native New Yorkers, they definitely tend to stay away from the tourist landmarks and sadly don't experience some of their own treasures. Thank you for watching :)

He'd been to the International House of Pancakes in NYC when it was pretty new and impresive and here he was bringing his family nd well they just kinda dropped the ball.. I jst wasn't that impressive yrs later and well the International part wasn't there so to speak poor Dad he wanted it to be the majical place he'd seen it wasn't there anymore it was just a building that any waffle house could have called eh the house's house...

The restoration in the 80’s really did its job, but the quaking and shaking in the crown along with the heights is not for me. I’ll live vicariously through this video. Yeah, I saw it. 👍🏻

Anyone remember when u could go to the torch? I think they closed it after the renovations during 86 or 7. I've never been to N.Y. but it surprises me that the steps r less than many traditional lighthouses that I've visited.
@aKnightlyStory10 ай бұрын
So cool! Would have been neat to experience that. I imagine it would have been even more narrow if not requiring a ladder 🤔😱
@vaccumsealed10 ай бұрын
@@aKnightlyStory I'd imagine so. Did you happen to notice any "off limit* or "authorized personnel" signs that may have lead to further heights and narrow paths? I love lighthouses, but I hate heights, and it really freaks me out on my descent down as others make their way up and along the narrow and winding stairways alongside me. I can only imagine how this would make me feel. Thanks for sharing your video! : )
@aKnightlyStory10 ай бұрын
@vaccumsealed actually I saw both signs if I recall. It was behind a gate pretty high up, not far from the crown if I remember correctly. Maybe one day, they'll decide to open it up again! Thank you for sharing 😊

What a great video...brought back a flood of memories. I climbed up to the crown in 1982 as a 20 year old (I'm 62 now). I completely remember that narrow, one way up/one way down staircase to climb from the pedestal. We were only allowed to stay in the crown for certain amount of time (can't remember that part). Also, some of the crown's windows were actually missing and you felt the wind blowing inside. The other part I remember (laughingly) is if someone ahead you on the staircase "tooted", you got to bathe in the fragrance LMAO! 🤣

Hi! We are thinking of doing this later this year. One question, do they manage the number of people going up? If you are going down, I'm sure no one can go up. (Looks like only room for 1 person on the steps). So do you know how that's managed? Thanks!
@aKnightlyStory6 ай бұрын
Hi @Izzytravels23 ! So there is a staircase dedicated to those going up and a whole other one dedicated to those going down so you don't have to worry about coming across someone from the opposite direction and waiting. You are right that there is only room for 1 person, and that's why they have this one direction stairs set up the entire way. I hope this helps! Enjoy your time there
