Frankly, who needs another "stinky fish challange" with coughing and choking people? Anyway, here are a summary of some basic rules from Sweden when it comes to eating surströmming (or fermented herring). Yes, it is smelly and salty, but for some reason surströmming has survived more than 500 years of recorded history in Sweden. Fermentation has been used by mankind for thousand of years to conserve food (probably in shortage of salt). Surströmming is produced in Norrland (northern part of Sweden) and mostly eaten during late summer or early fall. The traditional premier date is on the third Thursday of August. Here are some basic guidelines. (1) Surströmming should always be eaten together with good friends. A suit is not a most appropiate attire on this occasion. (2) Leave your children and pets at some other place before the meal (kids will hate the smell, dogs will love it). (3) Always open the tin can and serve surströmming outdoors (for obvious reasons). The can is best opened under water in a bucket. (4) Never EVER eat surstromming straight from the tin can - and PEEL OFF off the skin! (5) Always be sure to serve the right side dishes with surströmming. No one in Sweden ever eat just surstromming. Consider it as a spice with the sides! (6) After every bite, clear your throat with a sip of ice cold Absolut Vodka - blue label, 80 proof. Some prefer milk as an non alcoholic option. The CHALLANGE is to give surströmming the respect it deserves and it will give you a food experience that will last a lifetime!

It is good. I eat it every late summer. But he does it waaay wrong. You take smaller bits of it together with boiled potato, sourcream, gräslök (English?), red onion, soft or hard white thin bread, snaps (Scandinavian spirits) and lager beer. Yummy! In august my cravings for surströmming party starts!

Ja, en gång om året är lagom. Lukten vänjer man sig snabbt vid. Man skall äta det ihop med folk som älskar surströmming (min mamma äter 12-13 st). Jag äter 1-2 st på en kväll. I små bitar tillsammans med kokt potatis, rå lök, tunnbröd med riktigt smör. Man kan bara ta fram så mycket smör som går åt, för smöret tar åt sig av lukten och går inte att äta nästa dag.

He's very brave to eat this but he do it in a wrong way, you open up the can under water because it makes it doesnt smell as much and if you get that juice on your clothes, throw them away. You eat it with smaller bits, sour cream, onion, hard thin bread, boiled potatoes and wash it down with beer and snaps. I miss the surströmming premiere every year after i moved from the north part of Sweden back home to Östergötland.

Surströmming is a National seasonal delicacy. Firstly: Open the can completely submerged in a bucket of water. Throw the water away OUTSIDE FAR AWAY from the house. Fill another bucket with water and rinse all the water/brine stuff off of the fish fillets. Then ONLY can you take the dish inside when all the truly disgusting smell is severely diminished. Wear old clothes or a big ol' plastic apron - the fermentation process means the liquid contents are under pressure & are prone to erupt all over your clothes. The smell NEVER washes out. Wear disposable gloves that cover yr forearms too. Your hands will stink otherwise. Eat the surströmming with crispbread (tunnbröd), delikatess potatoes, creme fraiche, boiled egg & chopped red onions. Then surströmming becomes palatable. Swedes have Surströmming festivities all over the country during August. Locals look towards Surströmming Fest with relish. It's a seasonal highlight on their calendars.
