thank you for this video im considering this position part time 2 days every other week. It sounds like the training inadequate or non existent and you were expected to hit the ground running. If you were on EPIC, its a nightmare doing registration. Regarding insurance, you should not have worried about it, patients lie and get it wrong all the time. The fault lies with your trainer, they should have spent time with you one on one to get you comfortable with the system. You went live too soon.

I live in WNY too! Registration is pretty hard sometimes. Insurance has become a bit challenging since we switched to epic. It’s a very exhausting job. Especially when you have to deal with nasty people almost every day. I’ve had a married couple at my desk yelling at me, a guy leaned over my desk and yelled at me, poop smells, bad hygiene... I switched to scheduling and it’s been less stressful.

Omg that’s insane. Yeah even from the few days that I worked it, some pretty crazy things happened. Angry people, some guy accidentally cut his finger off at work. It’s definitely a very important job, just not for us tho!

Thanks for the vid. I had a similar experience through a temp agency. I was hired as an IT person for a dental software company. I don't see myself as an IT person at all but I was told is was a point and click kind of job. After 4 days of training I was lost LOL. The girl that was training with me was getting it but not me. Then they put me on the phone to call a dentist to do a software update that I would have to go remote on their computer. I panicked and told them this job wasn't right for me.

I see it's been a couple years since you posted this. I hope you're in a job you're more comfortable with. Being familiar with this kind of work though, it sounds like neither you nor your supervisor gave you enough time to succeed at this job. You can't learn it and get your groove in it in just four days. Average training time for someone with no priorexperience (learning about insurance codes and processes for your specific hospital, etc) takes about three months. I'm thinking the dude who was training with you already had some experience. Which brings me to what I think is the greater lesson here: Don't compare your growth and your progress to the next man's. I've been a patient access rep in my local er for 2.5 years and I love it. But you are completely right that it can be extremely stressful and sometimes very difficult to figure out patients insurance information. It can be especially stressful when it feels the other departments around you and your department supervisors don't appreciate the difficulties of your job. Seems like the nurses think they could do my job without a second thought, but they have zero clue.

Yeah I completely agree with you about the nurses and supervisors. It's not necessarily that patient access is a bad job, it just wasn't for me. I'm really glad that you enjoy it tho!

They had me me read a bunch of stuff about the different insurances and my hospitals privacy policy and I just trained and shadowed for about 2 or 3 days.

I interviewed for this position two days ago. I have a second interview with two supervisors next week. At the hospital I'm communicating with, there are two weeks of classroom education prior to working in the hospital. Once working in the hospital, the director who interviewed me said they consider a person to be sufficiently trained after six months on the job. I just want to throw this message out there for anyone who comes to this video and is interested in this job!: I just started this job 2 weeks ago and definitely would say they didn’t take long enough to train you. I would have felt the exact same way as you after only 4 days of training because it really is a lot to learn! But my training is 4 weeks long and they will be having an even more invasive computer training that’s a week long for 8 hours a day going into depth with the computer system. I’m a very hands on learner and my trainer let me watch and then do stuff while she observed in case I wasn’t clicking the right things. She said I’m catching on quick! But the thing is, I don’t retain information AT ALL. It’s just been so repetitive I’m picking it up. I’d say it really comes down to your training and the environment. I lucked out and have people who want me to succeed. They are very kind and very helpful! If anyone reading this DOES want to try this job out make sure you get a feel for the training aspect first! I totally would’ve quit if it were 4 days and they threw me to the wolves. But I’m able to take in things slowly and see how things work and I’m really enjoying it so far!!! As for the guy in this video, I know this was years ago but I came and watched this video right before my job and was scared and talking myself out of it even more but wanted to wait until after to comment😅 I hope you’re happy where you are!!! @@sunshyne412 Absolutely!! Sorry I just saw this. How’s it going for you? I cannot stress enough that you need to find a team who wants you to succeed and is thorough and helpful!! I was in training the last month, but today was my second day at my actual place of work and everyone is so kind and helpful. I also don’t do ER, I’m more in the realm of family practice and stuff like that. If you’re feeling discouraged at any point in the ER, try looking for places like family practices or dermatology, things like that! Ours is a medical center that has a ton of different departments but the concept is pretty much the same all across the board. If you initially don’t like it, don’t give up. Find somewhere else!! But I hope you like it!

@@dvmn444 I’m still at my job and honestly now it’s so easy!! It feels extremely overwhelming at first and it takes a good few months to finally get comfortable but I work in a huge health plex and have hopped around a few different departments and they all have their own different things here and there. When I was down in the huge family practice dept on my first day I wanted to quit because we had some no faults, a workers comp, some intimidating stuff that doesn’t NORMALLY come in too often and of course my first day I was getting hit with so much. But everyone was helpful. We typically don’t see those things, it was just a weird off day that day. I thought “Oh my god I can’t do this.” But I’m glad I stuck it out. I love where I work!

I was an access associate in the admitting department. I had to use EPIC, but didn’t have a problem with it at all. The job itself wasn’t too bad, but it required a lot of thinking, attention to detail, MULTI-TASKING, etc. It was stressful and overwhelming during the week days, but chill on the weekend. It’s not for everyone but, at least, you tried it. I respect the fact that you were honest enough to admit that it wasn’t for you. I’ve been through this in plenty of other roles.

Tell me why this happened to me too. I applied because it sounded like a good job and also because I am going to school for health info tech and wanted to get a feel of working in the medical field. They desperately needed a third person at the front office and that was my seat. I literally trained for 3 days. Just shadowing the person and I was told so much info that on my 5th day I was kinda just put out there. I kept asking questions but the insurance part also messed me up. I didn’t know when to call for a rx or when the insurance was good to go and understanding what exams could be done together or when we couldn’t see the patient. So it was a lot and I last there for 7 days. I was getting the hang of checking patients in. But the preprocessing was the most tough part for me. The last 3 days I was crying because I felt like I wasn’t understanding it at all. And on the day I quit I was so stressed out and frustrated that I cried in the office and went to my managers office and quit. This wasn’t for me. I hated it. I’m a people person but the job was not my favorite. It really sucks. It’s not for everybody. I’m glad I got out because I would’ve been miserable if I stayed. And I was working in a imaging center, mri’s ct scans and all that stuff. And man some patients were assholes because they were “rich” concierge patients. But that’s besides the point. Currently looking for a new job! Hope I find the right place for me!

I went thru this exact thing.. however, I was getting the insurance verification, registration and etc pretty good..I had a hard time scheduling patients that was scheduling in advance because I was really comfortable with the scheduling side..it was very fast paced and I was thrown out there.

The graveyard shift guy definitely done similar job before. It takes many months to comprehend what is expected. I have done it for almost 7 years. There's insurance, authorizations, outpatient,inpatient, surgery, nutrition,lab,xray,all radiology. Knowing what to do for psych. How to work with those from jail. How to be fast pace and accurate. How to be calm and confident or they will eat you alive. All and all nothing to it 😆 I totally understand my friend why its overwhelming. I wanted to quit many times, but im going for business administration.

I accepted a position as a patient access/service representative and I'll start at the end of next month, so I've been looking for honest and thorough videos about the position. I really appreciate yours because it highlights some concerns I have, like regarding stress and such. Because my position is at a call center, I hope it will not be as stressful as interacting directly can be. I am afraid that my new workplace will give me the trial of fire teaching strategy, regardless of how generous they seemed in the interview. I also do not learn fast even though I really can be a good dedicated worker. I will 100% give it a good try and be there at least 6 months. My last job I was there just 3 months because they had rudimentary training and just didn't care about me beyond the first two weeks. My knowledge of the job was shot from the beginning. It was a really bad fit, possibly made worse by that it was a very small group. Since I have that frame of reference, I think if this new job is even marginally a better fit especially in terms of culture, I will definitely enjoy it more. Plus, better hours and the same pay.

My last position was so nerve racking that I would literally get stomach aches before logging in. Two weeks of training then the phones . Not enough training at all . I’ve never ever just quit and not give notice nor have backup. That’s how bad it was. I couldn’t take it anymore even after explaining to higher ups that I wasn’t comfortable yet . Still “ it’s time to get on the phones “. The software was super confusing. No rhyme or reason to billing and including collections. Nothing was mentioned about those things in the job description. They left a lot out of the responsibilities. Back to back calls . Too much information in too little time

My advice would be to make it a known fact that you really enjoy helping others and that you do well in stressful situations. Those are two key things that you’ll need in Patient Access.

Patient access is not easy. I been doing it for almost 7 years. Its no joke. I done Er, breast center, and outpatient. All have their own way of doing things. I done all three before at the same time and have done bed boom at the same time. Its not easy and not for the faint hearted.

Impulse most hospitals prefer associates degree but they will give you a shot if you have good experience or if they desperately need you.

I didn’t! I hadn’t worked any type of office or medical job prior to it. They will train you on the spot even if you are new to the field.

It sounds as if the person you where training along side of had “ previous” experience. That’s maybe why they where catching on so quickly. I am currently going through a similar issue as a clerk in a hospital setting. The problem for me is that my trainer is a narcissist and she has made up in her head that she doesn’t care for me. As a result, I feel she is trying to push me out the door 😢. I am currently on day 3 of training.

@@ohadrilove I love it ! It really depends on your personality. I'm very easy going and can can pretty much get along with anyone. People show up feeling sick and upset all you have to do is be empathetic, kind, patient. This job isnt for everyone so it tends to have a high turnover rate at my hospital. So far I've seen 3 girls quit and I've only been here 2 months.

Been in patient access rep for almost a week, technically was in orientation for a day, did health stream tests most of a day, watched a couple of ladies for 2 days, and had hands on some a day and omg I'm not usually 1 to throw in the towel but just as u stated all those different insurances and codes man o man, I would like to be alot quicker lol I thought i would love the job bc i enjoy helping people have customer service experience it's a full time position but it's something else it's been leaving me mentally drained, I'm more ol school early 30s and their system is so hitech learning that alone is a job in itself lol hate to leave bc i like the people in the dep. and the coordinator for giving me a chance but I gots to go lol transferring to a different dept.

I felt the exact same way as you! I really liked the people that I worked with but as far as the actual job went, it left me very unhappy afterwards knowing that I had to go back and do it again the next day. It makes me feel good that I wasn't the only person with a similar experience.

It sounds like they didn't spend enough time teaching you about insurance and maybe you weren't expecting it to be so technical. I've worked in insurance and you don't learn it in a day or 4 days. I'm not faulting you but it sounds like a big part of it is about the revenue cycle which is maybe not what you thought.

Started on the 24th. Will be in training until the end of February. No prior experience, no degrees. Will be in the ED overnight. I feel a bit overwhelmed but felt better when I was able to do some things. I also attend Epic Training classes for 3 days then insurance training. IMO is all depends on location and how they do things. For those who are in it, keep requesting more training and if you are done with it, leave. Your mental health is super important.

As for what I’m doing now, I’ve been working as a personal shopper at Walmart for about 2.5 years now! I really like it but obviously I’m chasing a lot more than Walmart. But overall, I enjoy the job most days, I love the people I work with, and the pay is decent for what I do!

Well, you're actually supposed to have a certificate that includes training in medical terminology/ insurance and billing and things like that before getting that job. That's why there was such a drastic difference between you and the other guy. You got the job because you were in house and he got the job because he was trained and certified. Sorry you went through that, they should have put that on the job listing. You do understand that someone who understands what they're doing is not expected to act like they don't if someone in the group doesn't understand what they're doing, right? It's not messed up or uncool for him to use the month's of training that he studied/paid for because you were unaware that starting health care is much easier with college training.

It does not take any sort of certification to do patient access. It’s one of the easiest jobs in healthcare you could get, you’re basically a secretary.

No, you don’t have to have certifications for these jobs. The issue is the lack of training. My facility offers classroom training of 6 weeks, and 1-2 weeks of training for on the job and shadowing. When I was done with training and shadowing, I was more than ready to begin my Patient Access position. The issue here is simply lack of training.
