I bought a Morgan Black special edition guitar a couple of years ago from Orangewood and it got to me with the neck broken just below the headstock. I contacted Orangewood immediately and received a new replacement in two days. Outstanding customer support. And I have to say that it played extremely well for a $300 range guitar. I am sold on the company and have purchased three more Orangewood guitars as gifts for my grandkids.

You're lucky. My Morgan Mahogany Live came with a misaligned neck (making the high E unplayable, slipping off the neck constantly which doesn't happen on any of my other guitars or any other I have ever played in my life) and two pretty noticeable blemishes on the headstock & body. After emailing Orangewood and sending them pictures, they blew me off and simply said everything was "satisfactory" to them and that I could not send it back for a replacement, nor would they compensate me in any way or give me some kind of rebate or even a discount code for a future purchase lol. I will never be doing business with them again but I'm glad you had a good experience. Maybe I just got a bad employee or something, who knows, but I'm not rolling the dice again.

I find it interesting that Orangewood would send a retail store their products to review, and also that you seemed to give them an honest review even though you don't deal in the brand and they are essentially competitors in the same space. I also find it interesting that "Direct to Consumer" companies would be at NAMM which is what I thought a trade show for Music Merchandisers. The market is definitely changing...

It’s hard to argue with the specs of the Dolores at this price level…Torrified Spruce top, solid Mahogany back & sides, Ebony fingerboard and bridge, Tusq nut & saddle, hard shell case, Grover open gear tuners, etc. most of what you asked for to differentiate itself IS already included. For another $330 the can buy the guitar with the LR Baggs Anthem installed. That said, as each guitar is different, you are taking a risk in not being able to play it before you buy, and in my experience that CAN make a real difference. I did buy a Orangewood Berkeley and my experience was good. I love the guitar. Being a solid wood guitar, it is VERY sensitive to changes in humidity, especially in its first year. So it has needed a few truss rod adjustments and I chose to crown & polish the frets, as I prefer pretty low action. It’s under 2mm with no buzzing anywhere. It’s not perfect however, but it was just over $800US, which seems like a petty good value to me. I’ve played many “better” guitars, but usually several multiples of price more expensive. If I decide to buy a guitar in the $3-5000 range or higher, I would definitely want to play it first, but sub $1000 I think Orangewood has a place in the market.

I owned an Oliver model a couple of years ago for a travel guitar. Paid $150. Out of the box it played EXCELLENT. Good action but frets we’re a little rough. Easy to fix with a little fine sand paper. The top was solid, laminate back and sides. I had ZERO issues with it. I sold it to someone who needed a cheap guitar. What a great sounding guitar for campground. I’d rather have that Oliver than $200 Fenders, EPI, or Yamaha. I own American Martin, Breedlove , and Gibson. I would NOT SPEND $800 for an Orangewood guitar. Spending $800? No way for an Orangewood. Thanks for reviewing this brand. Good of you to do this.

I have a two year old Orangewood Mason Live with the torrefied spruce top. After a truss rod adjustment, some quality strings, and the addition of locking tuners, the guitar is definitely a nice sounding guitar for doing gigs. It has great tone, holds tuning well, and the action is low and extremely nice to play playable. For the money spent, it's a much better guitar than the more expensive Fender electric acoustic that my son plays. I've heard people complain that the Orangewood acoustics don't resonate as well as a Gibson or Martin, but I get compliments all the time on the way my Orangewood sounds.

Why? I found it’s cheaper even getting it professionally installed, and I’m always happy with the pickup I pick compared to most the shit Martin puts in their guitars. Infact 3 of the last 4 martins I bought I had to have work done to before they were really playable. Even after the one said it was PLEKED by Martin before it went out. My buddy’s bought 1 orangewood and received a 2nd as a gift and although I felt they were a little overbuilt they were nice to play and better than most of the sub 1000 offerings from most places at a fraction of the price. I’m really Leaning into that direction for cheaper bang around, couch or gift guitars. does their nicest one stand up to my CEO7? No, but theirs is also less than half the price, and comes with a good set up out of the box.

Bought an Orangewood Oliver Mohagony about 2 years ago. Out of the box it played, felt and sounded well above my expectations. The highly protective gig bag it comes with is awesome. Frets and fretboard edges were smooth and I would even say slightly rolled. Didn’t like the strings that came on it so after about a month I put my preferred strings on and it made a very very big difference. I prefer Daddario strings. The one downside of my Orangewood Oliver wood be the tuning machines. Although they have a great feeling black rubbery coating on them, they don’t feel solid when you turn them. They seem to hold tune pretty well but have a little slack when tuning. Little nitpicky but that’s really the only negative of the guitar. I will buy another one soon.

Min: 4:35, man in black shirt wonders - what is with the 12th fret design? // Answer - it represents the leaves on either side of an orange stem. Like when oranges are hanging on a tree. Early Orangewood logos and designs leaned into that look alot more. Some even included the leaves the stem and curve of the top of an orange. Newer design is more subtle, streamlined and classy.

Just bought an Orangewood Oliver Jr. Live; I can unequivocally recommend it as a $200 guitar. It’s got more heart than my Fender Sonoran (which has been modded and is about to be again) and more spirit than my Simon and Patrick Songwriter series.Smaller, and that is a thing of course. Has me wondering about the full size Oliver?! It got this little attitude I am loving rn. It might be shaping up to be runner up to my most played guitar, a Breedlove Organic Artista Series. The Breedlove (Sweetwater) had to be replaced; first one had a weird chunk of tear out inside the soundhole that drove me crazy and I couldn’t accept (looking down at it all the time.) The replacement Breedlove I got actually is not as pretty, so huge finish variations, but it is much more playable and sonically pleasing than the first, even though the second one also had an issue… with nut spacing. 😮 So, comparison, my $200 Orangewood needed a tad of truss rod adjustment out of the box. It’s “almost perfect” feature seems to be that one bridge pin hole is drilled or driven more deeply than it’s neighbors. I played it out about 26 hours after receiving it, and my little group of listeners raved about it and of course we’re passing it around to have a try. At that price point, I feel like the Orangewood can’t be beat. I’m probably gonna get the full size Oliver when I can cuz this little beast has something I really dig.

I played a used Sage at Guitar Center. Does it have passive pickups (no battery)? I like the idea of no battery.
@paulmackie593 Жыл бұрын
The Sage has a solid spruce top and solid mahogany back & sided. The “live” version has the LR Baggs Anthem system installed. The Anthem uses both in undersaddle Piezo pickup and an internal microphone that can be blended to adjust the sound to what you like. Controls are assessable from the sound hole and there is a 9volt battery to power the preamp. LR Baggs says the battery will last approx 170 hours. I have seen users report between 100-300 hours. Likely you should replace the battery whenever you change strings. YRMV

I bought an Oliver Jr Mahogany Live in 2019 - solid top that I picked up in the low $200s on sale. As a pastor, I was looking for an inexpensive instrument that could go caroling to the homes of shut-ins, be taken to a camp and used around a campfire, be handed to a middle schooler who wanted to join me in playing with a group, or played in any other setting where I needed a guitar but didn’t want to risk a nicer instrument. Then Covid came along and everything moved outside - sometimes in iffy weather and the pickup was put to use. The guitar checks all those boxes. In its gig bag it is small and light - I take it in nursing homes and living rooms where a dreadnought in a hard shell case is just awkward. Do I prefer it’s sound to my other acoustics? No, but is it a useful instrument for a number of different settings? Absolutely. It was well set up out of the box. I would recommend the guitar to someone with similar needs - or a beginner looking for something very playable and inexpensive. However, I am not sure I would purchase one of their higher end guitars. At higher price points, I want to pick one up in the store before I buy. Just my taste, though. Thank y’all for this review!

I bought my Morgan in 2019 and a little over a year later, the neck started separating from the body. Orangewood said that it was out of warranty and that I'd need to have it repaired by a luthier. $300 of repairs for at $250 guitar. So, it sat in the closet until today when I decided that I'd just fix it myself. How hard could it be to get a neck off an acoustic. I wasn't wrong. With about 30 minutes of coaxing with a heated palate knife and some shoving, the neck came right off. Most of the work was separating the fingerboard from the body because nothing was holding the neck in the pocket. There was one section about an inch long and maybe a quarter inch wide that had glue, and it had broken out back in 2019. There were a few spots of glue under the finger board any one spot that broke out on the neck heal that had glue. There were several shims in the neck pocket as well. 3 on the base side and 2 more on the treble side. Don't get me started on the quality of that neck joint. I'll fix it and it will play great but that's what you're getting folks when you buy and Orangewood. It's sad because the guitar really did play well. The sound was a bit quiet because of the thick poly coat but that didn't bother me. It was meant to be a guitar I could take anywhere and not worry. And it will be, as soon as I fix that travesty of a neck joint.

I got an Orangewood Hudson in 2019 after I saw it being played in a guitar KZbin video. It sounded pretty good. When it arrived, it was horrible. The bridge pin holes were not drilled properly. The neck was rough and bumpy. There were dings and scratches on the top. Anyway, I contacted them and they apologized profusely. I was given the option of a refund or sending another guitar. I thought about it and I figured that if the second instrument was in bad shape I could get a refund so I opted for a replacement. The second one had a problem with the B string nut slot that made it hard to tune. I got that fixed and it was a very nice guitar. Looking at the specs, the Dolores appears to be a very similar instrument. The Hudson has a torrified spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides. I believe you said the Dolores had layered back and sides, but the website said it was solid Mahogany. Anyway, I enjoyed playing it for several years and I believe it was a great value. I think the Dolores would be as well as it sounds like quality control has improved. I have since acquired a Martin HD-28. Anyone looking for an Orangewood Hudson for a great price, let me know.

The Taylor does play and sound better, but it cost three times as much. Does the Taylor sound and play three times as good? Most definitely not. I took my Ollie on vacation to Mexico and had it out around the campfire and by chance a professional musician from Europe was there. He played it for a long time and was amazed when i told him I paid less than $200 for it. As far as this review, they sure do seem to focus on inconsequential things about the guitars. Main turnoff for me on these Guitars is #1 the satin finish instead of the gloss finish and #2 no pickguard on either of the guitars which both of these items Cheapens the appearance of these guitars for me and if I were looking on any website for a guitar that has bang for the buck I would never buy either one of these instruments. Heard you mention Epiphone and I just bought the epiphone J200 a Beautiful instrument from Sweetwater for $549.00 and bought the Epiphone case for it for $129.00. The J200 I bought was exclusive to Sweetwater called Heritage Cherry. Picture looked good BUT when I got that instrument my eyes BUGGED OUT IT WAS DROP DEAD GORGEOUS AND THE SOUND AND INTONATION WAS PERFECT. As you probably know the Epiphone is owned and made by Gibson and this guitar sounded every bit as good as any Gibson I ever picked up and was certainly BETTER than any martin I ever Played and I owned a Martin D76 which was the SORRIEST guitar I ever owned

I’d love to see a review of a couple of Breedlove guitars.

I played a Martin D 28 side-by-side with the Orangewood Sage I bought the Orangewood I could have brought the Martin and went in debt, but I just wanted to guitar. I can play and soundeds great don’t get me wrong. Martin is a great guitar, but mainly a great name. Orangewood is a great guitar but not a name like Martin at this time. Someone might say “would you go to a restaurant that had great food but atmosphere was like your best hometown Restaurant or a super great atmosphere restaurant with same Great food but twice price.” Plus, I don’t want to worry every time I take my guitar out of the case to play it.

You're 100% correct. As a gigging musician, I want a gig bag and a pick up. I could give two sh!ts about a hard shell case.

I really like the easy-access battery compartment. REALLY appreciate that. Why would Coop like open-tuners? Does his hair get caught when he's trying to get his tong out of those? Darn... I hate that. I do like the headstock which makes it difficult to poke my eye out. Not impossible... but mostly I ended up with blackeyes. "I asked for it... I caught my tongue in those open-tuners, then my hair and finally banged my eye with the flapping headstock." This is what happens with Texas' recent tornadoes.

I keep waiting for Cooper to show me some bass-string growl. He needs to revisit Neil's TELL ME WHY or Stills' BLACK QUEEN.

One more player's request. Can you do above-12th-fret full chords, even using your thumb in places, then mention ease or discomfort of those.

I have 2 OrangeWood guitars and a Taylor 314 .. never had a problem with the OrangeWoods , they stay in tune , the only thing I changed were the strings to a lighter gauge.. my opinion OrangeWood is better than Martin.. don’t know what happened with Martin but they tend to split and come apart.. older Martin guitars were built much better.. OrangeWood is an underrated company, my friends that are professional guitar players couldn’t believe how well OrangeWood are built let alone the sound

I purchased one several years ago. It was just too stiff. The finish was way too thick for me. It played ok but wasn't huggable. I returned it with no problem. Great company customer service

I think you’re wrong with the specs on the Dolores I’m pretty sure if it’s a fully solid wood body all around not just the top

Clearly there are now very high quality China manufactured acoustics with serious features like all solid quality woods, torrified tops, high quality tuners and fretwork, excellent intonation, reliable tuning, good initial setup, name brand pickups, etc. for under $1000. Recording King and Eastman and Epiphone, Orangewood perhaps, and less often seen in the USA are Cort and Sire and such. I strongly suspect Cort is making many of these and limits how much they sell in the USA as a result so as to not compete with their customers. I love quality acoustics and it has made my shopping VERY difficult.

I played a Mason Live out for s years and it held up just fine. A friend got a Morgan live and played it every week in praise band. They were very inexpensive early on but now starting to become a bit less of a value.

Our instructors played an Orangewood guitar and I compared it to my Takamine G series dread cutaway with a pup, Solid top spruce, Lam. B&S in Sunburst, second same configutration one w/solid top & back in Ebony. Both were much easier players than the Orangewood both had gloss tops and the orangey had a satin finish. THey felt like the Seagulls, nice instrument but nothing special. Even my COrt dread cutaway electric sounded better and were easier players. It was better than my Recording King solid wood OOO body. It needs a real attentive setup next year.

*WARNING* I had an Orangewood Guitar, which sounded fine for about a year, then it completely disintegrated. The neck warped... a truss rod adjustment worked at first, then it started warping unevenly, and the truss rod couldn't correct it, with the truss rod snapping and completely separating from the body from the stress. And the top had started separating from the sides. My best guess would be that the wood was not adequately aged, and/or the glue they used was incorrectly formulated for wood instruments. And my multiple other guitars were fine, so it was stored adequately. But hey, it's a cheap practice guitar so materials and workmanship are what you'd anticipate. Take it for what it's worth, but if you're buying this guitar for practice or a beginner, expect it to have a short expiration date.

I like that type of finish. The gloss finish is sticky if ya know what I meant
